Couldn't agree more, The Count of Monte Cristo is just endless pages of fun!
@flipfloppoet43772 жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree. I DNF'ed it around 300 or 400 pages. Everything happening in his revenge years was just so conveniently coming together, one lucky happenstance and coincidence after another. Hundreds of pages to decribe surroundings, but almost none to show the emotions, to develop characters and what makes them tick. No finesse in plot planning. Coincidences happen, leading to action, and in that it is repetitive as it goes on for hundreds of pages in similar fashion (I skimmed through the middle part). Everything is guided by one single emotion and it never wavers/expands/learns. A one-dimensional character who would not live up to modern times' literary scrutiny. Maybe, with all the brilliantly plotted books and TV shows of our times, I've been spoiled for imaginative storytelling, unexpected twists and turns, realistic characters, etc. Maybe, if I could see it through the lens of its time, I would judge The Count of Monte Cristo differently. But I cannot un-know the amazing plots and characters from all those other amazing literary works, so I'll have to miss out. I'm glad though that books like these still find an audience in modern times. Even if that audience is not me.
