You people should stop shaming wattpad (and AO3), it's literature that gets lots of young people into reading and let new writers create and experiment. Yeah, there are some that aren't great, but there are some that are and there are some that are becoming (either great reader or writers). It isn't cool to shame what's mostly just some young kids leaning their way into literature.

It’s because we live in a world where books have become rather unpopular and their readers have become uncool. When you see someone reading a book under these conditions, it’s almost like witnessing a random act of humanity but in much, much simpler terms. It’s almost the same feeling as when you find out that someone else likes the same unpopular tv show as you do. You don’t even have to talk about it, you just take an indescribable amount of comfort from the fact that you’re not the only one who watches it. In the same way, you take an indescribable amount of comfort as a reader from the fact that you’re not the only one.

"Speaking to someone on the London Underground is actually illegal." Whoops. I definitely did that when I went to London. The Londoners brushed my American ass off fairly quickly, but surprise surprise, a Parisian struck up a conversation with me and gave me tips on where to go for the few hours I was there. I said, "Man, from all the rumors I've heard about Parisians, you are much more friendly than Americans make you out to be!" He said, "Yes, but we like it that way, so that is our little secret." Then winked and got off the train.

Jack's description of "small pleasures' reminded me of an old friend in secondary school. We had three writing exams throughout the term in which we were given a theme and told to construct a short story around it in one and a half hours. Now said friend of mine was an amazing writer and always got so carried away. She built all these intricate stories and would only snap out of it when we had about three minutes till the end. So, in the middle of a potentially wonderful story, she always just wrote, "And all of a sudden, a great big earthquake shook the land and claimed all of their lives." Brilliant.

I need more episodes of this!! I've previously bought books that I've seen strangers read on the tube and it's made me feel weirdly connected - not to the individual strangers, but to the city, the underground, the beehive that is London

Just a coment on fanfic: People should stop shaming wattpad (and AO3), it's such a literature that gets lots of young people into reading and let new writers create and experiment. Yeah, there are some that aren't great, but there are some that are and there are some that are becoming (either great reader or writers). It isn't cool to shame what's mostly just some young kids leaning their way into literature.

This is a lovely concept ... I hope you do it again, maybe make it a series or something. I live in a country without much in the way of public transport, so this really awakened this romanticised life of trains and books for me that I can't actually live in my own life. So I have to live vicariously through you :-) Thanks for a great video.

ahhh i read hamnet just this weekend so i was extra delighted to see it in this video!! now i can scream about my love of maggie o'farrell's writing style in the comments instead of to everyone in my house 😂 (don't you just LOVE the way that she takes her time with absolutely everything she says? making each and every moment so deeply ensconced in meaning and using very period-typical words without ever making it seem pretentious. ugh, absolute masterclass stuff)

I clicked on this video quite randomly, but oh boy did this make me feel things. 1. I've not been to London since before this pandemic started and the little glimpses of the tube and general street vibe hit me so damn hard it knocked me breathless. 2. I totally stalk other people's book choices on public transport so I 100% trust and believe in this method. 3. I have that same lightening bolt lamp and devil's ivy plant in my bedroom so clearly our tastes align at least on a basic level which I'm taking as a sign to listen to these recommendations. *Instant subscribe 🙌*
