Might be the biggest road train you can drive in queensland, but they run 56.5m fuel trucks between Darwin and Alice, and WA has 60m super quads in the pilbara.

They call the Pilbara quad country. You soon learn to respect them and the drivers when you navigate around them all day and night. The bloody cattle and camels are free range up there, adding more fun to the trips.

1985 my brother and I went on au Outback bus tour from Melbourne to Alice Springs and back. I believe that one of the road trains we passed was 4 trailers. I’m surprised that they don’t have a RR line connection between the Queensland east coast to the line that goes north through Alice Springs to Darwin.

Beautiful trucks. I remember stopping at the Blue heeler hotel back in 99 on a trip from Brisbane to Mt Isa and writing my name on one of the beams across the front entrance. My dad also had a blue K6 honda four and lived not far from Emerald where they filmed Solo One and was in the background on one of the episodes

Good welll edited video. Lucky you didn't have to drive from Townsville to Mt Isa on the Flinders Hwy like we all have to. There is something about going over narrow bridges in a road train with another coming the other way and you only have about an inch to spare. Also we hit at least 3-4 roos everynight in winter so lucky you guys didn't drive at night.

My days in eighties ran out Toowoomba to Alice,Darwin, Broome,hook up triple at condamine,my Prime mover was short nose western Star,cat 3406,20 spicer,general freight north,most cattle hides home to Toowoomba, Record 3 trailers hides 120 ton split up to 6 trailers get through Gail's weigh bridge get into Brisbane,biggest fun dogging the scales in QLD back blocks. Back loads give good profit.

"It's the biggest roadtrain you can drive in Australia, it's 53 m long" Small correction, it's the longest roadtrain you can drive on most public roads. There are longer roadtrains you can drive from mines to port in the Pilbura, but they are on specific private routes. 5 even 6 tipper trailers.

Rode shotgun with my dad when we moved up to darwin (defence posting) and that 4 day trip will still always be one of my favourites. Just wish i got to see a road train in action during it

How come you didn’t leave the b double enclosed trailers together, and the two open trailers together when you hooked it up as the full size road train? Cheers.

@@dynamo1796 - not in Australia (major cities excepted - with duplicated freight tracks), unless there were a huge expenditure on rail - separate to general road routes which must also be maintained for local ands "retail" travellers.

biggest road train at 53m? one i drive for work is 60m long and yes its on public roads
@midwesternfarmer615 Жыл бұрын
Just curious why would you switch trailers around and then drive an empty tractor in the convoy? Why wouldn’t you just continue with the shorter loads and distribute the trailers and load more evenly just like you had been doing earlier in the trip? I know nothing about road trains, but only thing I can think is that maybe it saves fuel?

Kinda don't know much about trucking, but why use only one truck to pull all those trailers when there's two trucks? Why not split the trailers between them? Is it simply because it looker cooler for the video? Because it certainly does!
@michavanbodegom1197 Жыл бұрын
is it more efficient if u use 1 road train and 1 seperate truck than 2 smal road trains at all times ? im just wondering if it is
@kadmow Жыл бұрын
(triples ("A-triple" roadtrains, with 2x dolly converters)) and the various Quad (ABB,BAB) configurations can only run on certain routes - in the eastern and southern areas of Australia, for those regions B-Double (or B-Triple for some routes) is the biggest truck that can be run, hence running a BAB-Quad means it can just be split into 2x B-Doubles (plus an empty dolly) and a contractor can pull the second B-Double rig (If an outfit wants their own prime-mover pulling both, it may just be better to either bobtail the second prime-mover or don't bother hooking up the BAB-Quad.) )

Need to get the terms correct - calling a "B-Trailer" an "A" is ignorant (though possibly typical "trucker parlance") - the "dolly" + semi-trailer MAKES an "A" (dolly + semitrrailer = (effective)Dog"box"; ie A-trailer - [NB. A-frame drawbar]....) The "B" is the hookup using the shared wheelset on the "B-double" (bridge trailer = "B")
