Shirley is definitely by far the most annoying character but I feel bad how much hate she gets 😅 She didn't take the money because Steve made up "lies" about their dead mum to sell books. She had to be the mum for all of them & helped every one of them (Steve with money, Theo lives with her, she paid for Luke's treatment etc) & yet they all stab her in the back

@@sofun101 EXACTLY. Steve is just awful and selfish, i don't understand how people can think Shirley is worse than him. At least she hasn't lied about their dead mom in a book to make money, that alone puts her WAY above Steve.

Shirl gets hate because people misunderstand her character as being cold. She tries her best to make sure her siblings are well taken care of and in the scene where she cuts Luke off, she's doing it not only to keep him and his problems from ruining Nellie's special day but because she feels like she's done all she can to help him and he's taken advantage of her enough times.

@@enriquesanchez9016 I don't think it has anything to do with intelligence. I think it has to do with how her character is written and her portrayal in the show. If the actress had chosen to say her lines in a more defeated tone instead of always sounding utterly annoyed with everyone,, Shirley would be a more sympathetic character overall.

Just a couple of quick notes and y'all can get back to the Great Basement Button Debate of 2019. 1. The eldest daughter's name is "Shirley." They sometimes call her "Shirl" so it does sound very similar to "Cheryl." 2. Theo's bed-friend is named Trish; she had her number written down on some paper next to her bed. Buckle up, boys. Story's only gonna get better. :D

Something about these reactions is kinda funny. I noticed that when one person reacts, they're pretty genuine(it's KZbin so who knows). When two, they feed off each other, three or more they joke the tension away to each other to where they miss half the point of the show. Even if one person is seriously invested and trying to watch they always get caught up in how their buddies try and make light of everything, which diminishes the suspense, which is the entire point of the genre.

The hate Shirley gets is SO overblown and ridiculous. She has done so much good for her family and most of them betrayed her in a way or another. Steve in particular lied about their mom in his book so she has every right to be pissed. Shirley haters also never seem to have any coherent argument against her, they just hate that she doesn't go with the flow like the rest of the family, especially when it comes to Steve's book.

I agree. I can't believe people hate her more than Steve. She took the responsibility of taking care of her siblings (as Steve should have as the oldest) and is charitable and kind (almost ruining her business by giving grieving families discounts and paying for Luke's treatment). Yes she made a mistake, but what real person doesn't? She took on the role of "mom" after their mother died, and felt pressure to be a perfect role model & sister. All Steve cared about was money and his career; he was selfish and didn't give a damn how his book would effect the family, even when confronted by his siblings. He lied to his wife for over 20 years...Shirley lied to her husband once. There really is no comparison.

Like letting Theo live with her family; paying thousands of dollars for Luke's treatments every month; making sure Nellie enjoyed her wedding day; confronting Steve about dishonoring their mother's memory by writing a dishonest book? Yes, what a terrible, terrible sister. Not like Steve, who clearly cared for his siblings by ignoring them and moving to LA to further his career. What an outstanding older brother.

I’m sad you don’t like Shirley. Maybe it’s because I have finished the show and seen all the development, but I love her. Her and Steve are by far the best characters in the show. I think She is the most generous of the siblings, not hesitating to help Luke or let Theo live rent free. But like all the kids, she is broken by what happened to them as children. And she crafted a very controlling personality so she could make sure not let anything else around her break. And while that may not be appealing from an outside perspective, I would argue she is the reason the children held together as much as they did. Great reactions otherwise! 🙂

Okay one thing I didnt know when I first watched the show but ALWAYS look in the background. You will notice a lot of bodies and figures hiding and walking around in the background. I watched it again with a friend and we screaming and constantly pointing out figures. At 7:05 you can barely see a white ish face right behind the ladder

Both Steve and Shirley are at the bottom for me of character. But there is a huge gap between them. Steve is all the way in the pits of hell. I completely despise Steve. He is such a shitty brother and son.

They are all dealing with trauma in different ways. Steve’s way of defending himself is denial and repression. His father won’t tell him what’s going on, he’s the oldest kid with no answers given, he thinks their family has mental illness that no one will acknowledge and he’s so scared of it he even destroys any chance of himself having kids. That all comes from trauma. Steve was old enough to start asking questions but young enough to still not fully know how to deal with what happened, and their father wasn’t exactly around to explain. If Hugh had been honest with Steve, then maybe Steve could have had a chance to comprehend it, but Hugh kept all of his kids in the dark, left Steve’s questions unanswered, so inevitably at Steve’s age, he would have eventually just decided on answers himself. The older you are, the more you’re looking to seek rational explanations that society expects you to. Steve saw his mother’s changing mood, then she’s dead and they all ran out of the house, and Hugh won’t give answers. So all Steve did was create his own answers. You can say that he did wrong in making money off the book, perhaps morally wrong, and maybe that makes him a bad brother. But he wasn’t a bad son. Hugh left a huge part of their lives unanswered, you can’t blame Steve for carrying anger towards his father. Think about it, if you were woken up one day by your father who ran away from the house with you and your siblings and then your mother whom you think you saw go crazy is dead and your father refuse to explain, is it really your fault for built up resentment to being stonewalled or is it understandable to be angry at your father for not telling you the truth.
