Yeah, SG... doing this video felt like an adventure to me, too. And part of that definitely had to do with seeing where it would go. So, I was as surprised as anyone else. Anyhow... thanks for listening & commenting. Eric D.

Your section on hauntology and unrealized potentials made me think of a phrase which is often used to summarize hauntology, "the future has been cancelled." Great video. Derrida might be too difficult for me to ever really understand, but this helped me get a lot more than I had.

Hmm... I didn't run into that phrase ("the future has been cancelled") during my wandering and wondering. It's a pretty cool, provocative angle on hauntology. It sounds a little like something Derrida himself might say, especially since those pesky Parisians like to say things in the most provocative way possible. But in any case, I'm glad that this video gave you food for thought. And thanks again for giving me the sweet idea. Eric D.

The people who most need to see this aren’t watching. “What if” applies to history as well as individuals, that is, we can see the possibilities if certain others had chosen differently at crucial points.

Considering the fact that Being and Time is your most favourite book, can you please make a video on Ernest Becker's book "The Denial of Death"? This book along with The Conspiracy Against the Human Race and A Short History of Decay are few of most bleakest books in the world. It's really hard to "move ahead" after reading them. I really appreciate these short and cool lectures. Thank you Sir.

Too good!!!....I was challenged to look up the term myself and got lost in the Wiki definition so thank you for clearing the fog, as usual...love the hat.

Well, thanks, DJ. Yeah, you kind tell from the word itself that it probably has to do with ghosts, haunting, etc. But I hadn't heard the word before, and the connection to Derrida was definitely new (although I had read a fair amount of him during my tremendously misspent youth). Anyhow, once you get a handle on what a Structuralist conception of language looks like, a lot of his opacity and weirdness falls away -- but definitely not all of it. Anyhow, thanks for noticing the hat. Ha ha... and thanks as always for listening and commenting. Eric D.

Great video, thanks for the lessons. Ive never considered past people to be providing conpanionship. I have rather viewed them as tools in a sort of dehumanizing kind of way, and I now see this. Also the part about being able to see this difference between yourself and the ideal through regret is a great help.

You're welcome, CC. Yeah, I think that a lot of the artificiality of the academic world falls away when you realize that it's really about drawing us toward a greater sense of intimacy with the world. And yeah, that includes the world of historical figures like the ones I'm mentioning in the video. But I'd also say that it's no less true in the realm of science. In addition... I agree with the idea that it's important to recognize the nature of our humanity, especially by dropping the unwholesome pretense that we're supposed to be perfect all the time. And yes, working with our regrets can be a way of moving toward that. In a way, all of our regrets hold a gift for us in their arms. And their gift has to do with improving ourselves, and dropping a lot of our illusions along the way. Anyhow, thanks for taking the time to listen and comment. Eric D.

Literally right after you made this 18 minute long video, why’d you call yourself a amateur? Information is information and I did just learn something from you, so thank you

Well, cool.... you're welcome. I'm glad that you got something worthwhile from this video. That's great! Anyhow, I called myself an amateur because that's how I felt... basically like a child just beginning to explore something new and wondrous. But actually, I feel that way about life itself a lot of the time. I guess that to me, amateurism is often under-rated. After all, the etymological root of "amateur" has to do with love and loving ("amare" in Latin). I don't thing that's necessarily a bad thing. Anyhow, thanks for listening and commenting. Gratitude. Eric D.

It looks like Webster's Dictionary doesn't have its "Why did you look this word up" forum anymore. That's a shame. I wanted to say why I looked up the word, "insouciance."
