*Would you find this hack useful? Do you know of any tricks that I might not know about?*

A great initiative to start this series, Richard! I'm sure you already know of the possibilty of using 'floating divisions' within Hauptwerk. Since you play the big M at a 3-manual console. I notice that a lot of Hauptwerk users think they need many physical manuals to play a sample set with for example 3 or 4 manuals. But when you know the option of floating divisions you will come very far with just 2 manuals on your setup.

@@RalphLooij sure ! the floating division is easy to configure and really powerfull, i have at home a 2 manual and I can drive even big 4 manual organs !!

Richard - I have been developing various "hacks" using the programmable and customizable MidiDesigner Pro (MDP) iPad app. I have a design using scoped pistons to function as Divisionals where they don't exist (such as Friesach). I believe a design to implement your function is feasible. MDP can implement functionality not available in HW. It also allows customizable User Interface with user defined colors, labels, and button placement. It uses multiple pages to allow selecting different organ set stops, different functions, and multiple functions. It can be used as a touchscreen or controlled by hardware pistons (such as Previous and Next stepper buttons). I have developed enhanced steppers for both the Master Generals and the Combo Stepper. I have included Floating Divisions, LCD readouts of such features as stepper steps, Crescendo setting, etc. All displayed on the iPad. I have an enhanced Registration Setter that is easy to use and minimizes errors by automatically control the Setter. I plan on shortly publishing my latest designs to share with organists such as yourself. I have an older example on KZbin. I am just finishing a HW VI design for Ewen Ritchie to try out that uses 3 iPads to simultaneously display Stops for multiple organs, Master generals with 65 steps on 2 pages, and Divisionals using Scoped pistons. .

SOOOOO much easier to see this rather than read the HW manual which I find difficult to understand at best. Thanks Richard!

You had me at “holy trinity of couplers” 🤣 This is a super demonstration of how the scoped pistons feature works. Took me years to figure out how to best use it and now it’s how I do generals on all sample sets - rather than via right click, I “auto detect” the scoped pistons at the [General settings]->[MIDI triggers (all organs)] - then when I load a new sampleset I just need to map the “scope” of each set of divisionals, as my console piston is already connected. This default coupler piston is ingenuousness - I have never seen this on a real organ and will definitely be using it. Thank you! (Good job on this video style also!!!)

Thanks a lot, Richard. I have just invested in Hauptwerk VI and I do not find the manual an easy read at all! It might as well be written in Swahili for me! I thought 'buses' were what you caught to take you to town, but apparently they are also used to send control signals and data between the processor and other components (whatever that means!). Having someone sat and talking and showing some handy stop changes is so very helpful. Thank you. (But Hauptwerk is an amazing piece of software: I am in TOTAL awe!)

I agree, Graham. The manual from MDA isn't an easy read. In The Netherlands someone wrote a Dutch manual, which is better. But then still I'm sure I don't know everything that's possible. There is so much possible in Hauptwerk, I still discover new things. The Hauptwerk mixer is a real maze...

Last summer I used the 14 day free trial for Hauptwerk and very much enjoyed it. I have yet to buy the Hauptwerk for various reasons but this tutorial really does explain how useful this program is. I can instantly see you can use this hack for so many different scenarios. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.

Big thumbs up for this. I never really know what scoped meant, but this careful explanation of how to set the scope for a piston has helped me enormously, not just for setting up couplers but stops as well. Thanks for posting and the one person who clicked the thumb down is probably using GrandOrgue :-)

I haven't got a Hauptwerk but your enthusiasm and easy to follow explanation of how to complete this 'hack' makes me wish I had. For any owners of such an instrument I can see how useful this series of 'top tips' will be. I'm guessing that a degree in computer science is needed to understand the Hauptwerk user manual so Big respect and hat off to you for a really well presented tutorial.

ok, this is really crazy now. I have a German instruction manual and still did not understand the explanation of the scope function. Richard, you explained it so well that I now understand it one hundred percent. in English...😂 Thx a lot 👍

That is a brilliant video!! I have thoroughly enjoyed ALL of the videos that you post but as a church organist I especially find the videos of hymn playing useful. While this is the first "Hauptwerk Hack" video I sincerely hope that it is not the last!! I'd love to hear more from you about how you register for hymn playing. You had one video where you put the screen of the computer in the video so the registration changes could be observed in real time - that was very useful too. How about a video of how you setup a basic registration for hymn playing? Again, I love what you have been putting up and am looking forward to whatever comes next!

Thank you so much Richard. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw you had uploaded that so helpful video. Having eventually deciding to bite the bullet and download Hauptwerk (after failing miserably with Grande Orgue) and also struggling to understand the manual (pardon the pun). This afternoon trying once more to get to grips with setting up the pistons. Thought learning music and organ terms were bad enough, but “reversibles, scoped, master generals, stepper?” Was a bit worried when you began to use Caen for your working example, as I am some way of needing or for that matter being able to afford that sample vest. But as you said your detailed instructions are transferable to my newly acquired Friesach, and St Anne’s Mosely. So excellent work and looking forward to your next lesson.

Having stayed awake through the cold winter night (down to 20c degrees) trying to figure how to link the divisional pistons on my Makin to run Rotterdam (the best recommendation you ever made) reading up about floating divisional s (good for linking in and out of virtual keyboards.) I watched your video two or three times then got the message I needed. Thank you so very much.

If you set this up on a reversible piston, you could turn this function on and off. Using your example, if you wanted to remove the couplers from a solo manual to the great and pedal, you would activate the reversible and it would take the solo couplers off. After that stanza, you could activate the reversible again and it would restore the couplers to the great and pedal. I also like reversibles for 32' pedal stops. Another possibility would be to create a sforzando piston.
