My new organ is almost complete, and in this video I'll show you the latest pictures and videos that I have.
This video features pictures sent to me by Renatus, and also includes videos of the organ as it stood on Tuesday 23rd November.
In this video I also show you how the stopheads are engraved!
Let's hope that this is the final update I give you of the 'build' of the organ prior to its delivery!
00:00 | Introduction
00:42 | Picking up from where we left off in October
06:08 | Keycheeks
08:01 | Toe pistons
11:01 | Stop/Division blocks
13:22 | Brass swell pedals
14:49 | Engraving of the stopheads (including video)
18:01 | Awesome videos of the new BIS organ
19:29 | Equipment bought using funds raised in the Organ Marathon
What an incredible journey this has been, and continues to be!

I think I really need to start considering a Hauptwerk setup for my church to replace a Johannus Sweelinck 370 that's more often these days out of commission. Getting this quality in Nigeria obviously now becomes the hardest part. This console is a beauty and mere knowing there will be no real pipes attached to something this size is blowing my mind.

Richard, congratulations on the design of the 'York' organ case, it looks magnificent. And I guess it will allow future modifications to the inside electronics as engineering advances inevitably take place. A friend, some years ago now, received a Rieger pipe organ from that Austrian company as appreciation for his voluntary work installing a larger Rieger organ in the theatre of a state capital in Australia; his Rieger necessitated major reconstruction of the family house! Quite lovely, but your instrument has no such problems I assume. Will you be making a new photographic backdrop for the organ? The present one is very effective providing a screen ambience.

Magnificent craftsmanship. Can I make a small suggestion? If building or acquiring a console, pedalboard and bench they are very heavy and it is back-breaking to move for cleaning, servicing etc. I built a platform in 2 sections on casters for the organ to make it much easier to move especially into another part of the home. Essentially built from chipboard sheeting used in house flooring and braced with 45 x 45 mm timber. Each section has 6 swivel casters to spread the load. The 2 sections clip together ( I used gate hooks to stop them drifting apart ). One section holds the console and the second section the pedalboard and bench which are removed from the console and are moved separately. Suppliers of new product only sell chipboard or plywood in large sheets meaning we have to buy much more than needed. But I found building recyclers selling suitable sheets of varying sizes previously used in partitions. I bought casters (50 kg rating) very cheaply at the local discount store. And a coat of paint does wonders to hide imperfections including my workmanship. But it has reduced the risk for me of back injury. I have built another for the local organ society which need to regularly move their instrument.

I appreciate Mr. McVeigh's demonstration of his project this video, because I designed, and had built from scratch, a downscaled replica of a Wurlitzer 3 manual Waterfall console. The console looks really beautiful, all that woodwork. My 10k$ 4-manual Content console looks a bit minimalistic to this 😅 (But good enough for me). Your playing skills really deserve such an amazing console. I think you had better gone for real PC hardware instead of a laptop. Laptops are usually end of life after 4 years or so and are way more expensive than PC hardware, as they are made to be mobile and look sleek which is unimportant inside an organ console. PC hardware gives a lot more bang for your bucks. Also if a single component fails then you can just replace it when using PC hardware. On a laptop it ends up very quickly with tossing the entire laptop in the bin to get a new one. During my study period i had a laptop of which the graphics chip its solder connections started to break on the main board. I was able to fix it by unscrewing the entire mainboard and putting it in the oven. But 2 months later it was broken again. Another laptop in the bin. With a PC it would just have cost a 50$ graphics card.

After using DefTech powered towers, I would never go back to them. The response is not flat like studio monitors, and you are constantly fighting it to get the sound to come out properly. The sound from the PreSonus R80 monitors that I am using now is also MUCH clearer. Unfortunately, the DefTech BP 10B speakers used originally in the organ at Trinity Church Wall St in NYC are no longer available.

This classical style is not my taste... I prefer the relative small, clean, open and modern set up like used by Fraser Gartshore. These ornamentary keyboard cheeks are really over the top. First I thought that wide concave display on your desk was to be placed on top of the console, but later I realized the music stand is enclosed by the huge piston towers on each side of the manuals... limiting the width for sheet music. Why all these "real" stops on a Hauptwerk organ? One or two touch screens would accommodate the flexibility to fit all kind of organs with just a fraction of the space that is now taken by these plastic stops. Nevertheless I do appreciate the craftmanship of this organ console, the beautiful oak parts and the nice details like the hidden door handle on the side of the console. I see and recognize all these little details like the panel door on the side that is not a real panel door (woodworking happens to be one of my hobbies)... But that doesn't change the fact this console will support you in playing the organ. So I wish you a lot of fun with this new console !
@panlomito
@panlomito 2 жыл бұрын
The Mickey Mouse ears on the keyboard cheeks (7:30) is a result of making inner corners with a CNC millingmachine that could be avoided by finishing this detail with the good old hammer and chissel. Hopefully this detail disappears behind the keys.
@panlomito
@panlomito 2 жыл бұрын
@ThePipeGuy I am also here for the organ music. But I don't think this is the best possible or finest console for a Hauptwerk organ. Best possible is with touch screen(s) and finest is with handcrafted woodwork.
@aBachwardsfellow
@aBachwardsfellow 2 жыл бұрын
@@panlomito - Rather than relying completely on pistons and presets, Richard very actively draws/cancels individual stops during his performance (as do many organists) -- sometimes even within the middle of a phrase. This gives considerable creative advantage -- to be able to make on-the-fly artistic decisions about changes in registration. He prefers to rely on the kinesthetic memory of the position of the stops, which kinestheic memory of stop manipulation then becomes integrated within the entire performance. It is very difficult to effectively do this on a touch screen for several reasons. For example, changing sample sets changes the order and location of the stops so that kinesthetic memory is more difficult. Also, quickly and correctly touching a stop on a screen during a performance -- without accidentally touching an adjacent one -- is more of a challenge. Thirdly, there may be issues with the reliability of touch screens -- especially over a number of years --- which would mean they would need to be replaced long before the draw stops.
@panlomito
@panlomito 2 жыл бұрын
@ThePipeGuy Of course this is my view/opinion. I realize that I have a different perception of a Hauptwerk organ. Not a copy of the console of an existing church, the finest oak wood combined with cheap plastic register knobs but a flexible platform to accommodate different organs... with a huge/wide display for sheet music and touch screens for easy access to individual stops.
@aBachwardsfellow
@aBachwardsfellow 2 жыл бұрын
@panlomito - please watch from 2:27 through 3:22 -- and throughout the performance -- in the link below to see how Richard draws the stops during a performance. This is an important -- if not vital -- skill for any organist to cultivate, and is generally transferable from one instrument to another. I would hope that you might see how difficult this might be to do using a touch screen, as well as the fact that the skill of using a touch-screen is not readily transferable to an actual organ. Just thought you might be interested to know ... kzbin.info/www/bejne/bprQooabg6eWecU&lc=UgwftNYyxR1HPW504VB4AaABAg&ab_channel=RichardMcVeigh%7CBEAUTYINSOUND Of course, if you are only ever going to play only on one organ in your home -- and either do not wish to invest, or may be unable to afford -- an drawstop console, then of course a touchscreen should be quite satisfactory - :-)
