About Charles James:
Charles James was a legendary American, Chicago-born designer. He moved to Europe and was acknowledged by Christian Dior and Christobal Balenciaga as one of the greatest designer of the mid-century.
American designer Zac Posen is deeply influenced by Charles James.
Using the draping on stand, or moulage technique in French, he created one of the most extraordinary gowns of his time.
This half-sewn muslin represents James's "Ribbon" dress, one of his most intricate designs. A significant feature of its construction is the tapering skirt panels that are twelve inches=30,5 cm wide at the hem and converge to less than one-quarter inch = 0,63 cm at the side waist.

Meaning that our subtitles are not automated because there is a lot of vocabulary, like "dress forms," "armscye," etc., which is never translated correctly by automated translators. Thank you for showing us this technique that is relatively simple but can be used in many ways and designs. I love the sinuous shape of the hem, it's so chic even on a dress form. Just imagine it in movement!

Hi Margarita thank you for your comment 😊. Yes this technique is really cool but not simple. As you work with biais and biais is not easy at all). And even with relatively simple things like Straight Skirt, as Mme Vibet says, "The simple things are the most difficult to make". Because they demand a lot of accuracy, eye training, knowledge of how to apply the garment balance and how to calculate the proportions properly. Little details make big difference 📚 The hem is straight 😉

Hello, This free tutorial was filmed during the lockdown period by our professor Aurélie Vibet with her personal smartphone. This period was difficult for many people. Aurélie wanted to support our students' community and generally everyone who loves French craftsmanship. This video is not a professional quality film like our paid courses. It was impossible to produce professional videos during the lockdown. We were not authorized to gather. Usually, we don't share free tutorials. We consider it's better to learn once and from the best, with the professor's personal review, than to spend (a lot of) time watching free videos. Someone who starts can't see his errors, they need someone experienced to review. Also, Aurélie always sees errors in the youtube draping videos so be careful when copying someone. So this "lockdown" video is here in memory of this particular period we all had. Maybe we will add some more videos later because anyway our students love to try these new things. But we always advice to have a good knowledge foundation first. Cheers 🤗
