How Versace Created The Supermodels (Versace Fall 1991 Fashion Analysis)

Gianni Versace was one of fashions greatest masterminds, and his knowledge of not only design but also culture, propelled him and his brand to a status many would only describe as legendary. But then add on top of that the fact that he helped cement the "Supermodel" in pop culture, along with the actual supermodels themselves, including Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, and Cindy Crawford, this Versace show was one of the most important!

The super models were in their early 20s at the time of this Versace show. But they do look more mature, and happy. They were allowed to show personality.

Greg T true, plus models were allowed to be a bit more curvy and healthy back then and ofc the hair and makeup made them look more “alive” too, now designers want models to look lifeless so people would put more focus on the clothes but imo it just makes the shows more boring and less eye-catching

And I absolutely agree that he was genius. I feel honored to have witnessed an artist of his caliber in my lifetime. And lucky enough to have just a few pieces from this era of Versace.

Well Ghauri has made the choice to stay away from the public, and she only was part of the industry for only a limited time. Yes she did contribute but the girls in the video were the main Versace girls, who continued in the industry. It may just be out of respect for her privacy. Also not a lot of people know of Ghauri because of her short fame. It’s really sad because she was so beautiful and her walk was unreal.

Right! And we took it for granted. Today, if just TWO of those names close a show-which they did not even walk in-with the designer (I’m thinking Kate and Naomi with Kim Jones, in this case), it’s pretty awesome. If we get a moment like that reunion at the end of the Versace show for Gianni, we break the internet. This thanks to what we’ve had to learn to deal with...

This was an era I wish I could relive. I was a teen in the 90s, yes I'm older than dirt. But the fashion felt almost magical then. Thank you for finally doing your research on the brand. I've been studying Versace history for the last 2 years, and it really upsets me every time you call the brand "tacky" in a negative way. It is MEANT to be tacky. Gianni wanted to redefine fashion and glamour. He doesn't believe in being boring. Fashion to him was supposed to be exciting, happy, unpretentious, so he incorporated all aspects of his life into his designs explicitly. Gianni Versace really changed fashion.
@agem1989

Yes but there are principles of design, something that the human eye is drawn to such as rules of third, leading lines, use of space etc. You can redefine fashion, but you can’t control or change the public’s taste that easily.

"Now we're pro sex worker, so if you're not, then unsubscribe." I love you Luke.😂 I loved Versace so much and actually visited the Paris atelier in 1991. I floated in there moon eyed, wondrous and unlike any of the other houses i visited the staff were polite and spoke to me. They offered me the both the men's and women's catalogs of that collection and i still cherish them. Hands down my favorite collection ever. My mom took a photo of me after walking out for because i cried - with joy. When Gianni was murdered i was at work and this Indiana girl sobbed. My coworkers were not sure what to do but allowed this art girl super fan to have some peace and grieve. Thank you for this video. Yep those were the best of times. I worked in the Financial sector so in day time I did the black elegant suits, but when Friday happened it was, more is more. I remember a John Richmond leather Jacket with “destroy”emblazoned across each sleeve. George Michael was best buddies with Lisa Stansfield, who had a classic hit “All around the world”. There were only two Destroy jackets, she had the other and auctioned it for charity. I spent the next decade explaining that I had not won it (ironically I met both George and Lisa at the opening of the Versace Storein London” both gorgeous people. I did express my distress over the Destroy jacket. She grinned and apologised. Anarchy and over the top was what Versace gave us. For me Evangelista was the greatest of them all. I too loved to change it up often with red, white blue, and blonde hair. My father survived me but only just. I kept all those pieces and the finally they went to my daughter, who like her mother loved over the top. She looked fantastic. Better than I ever did. But I am biased. It’s allowed. I am mature now but my natural long wavy black hair has blonde and ash brown highlights thro it and I still pull out the over the knee boots now and then. Never stop loving fashion it is where you find your soul. X

A couple of things you got wrong: You mixed up Cindy and Claudia with looks 3 and 4. Christy's first look was a princess or "fit and flare" dress, not a babydoll (the babydoll is the one that has the empire waist and full frilly skirt that makes anybody with a bust look pregnant. The dresses worn during that lip synching bit were babydolls). You actually correctly identified the same shape in the ready to wear portion. And the guy in the Wild One was Marlon Brando, not James Dean. But I'm being nitpicky. This was a real trip down memory lane for me. I was probably about your age when this collection came out. I'd forgotten how much I loved it. I always thought Versace took what Christian Lacroix started in the 80s and made it more accessible with the deliberate use of overtly sexy elements. Lacroix's excess skewed old compared to Versace's.

Thank you for this! I have loved Gianni since I was a girl. He is an icon. I grew up watching the Supermodels. Those girls had "It" no offense to today's models but they don't even compare. Loved everything about this and just subscribed to your page. Great job covering the greatness that was Versace.

The only one who I think looks like a 90's model is Bella Hadid and even she falls short in terms of the confidence. I think nepotism spoils that unique type of "started from the bottom" confidence.
@suleb1
@suleb1 4 жыл бұрын
Michelle Foucault there are other models who are starting from “the bottom” and they don’t have great walks. But you won’t know or discuss that because they don’t have fame. Plus fashion houses actually tell the model’s what type of walk to do to portray their collection. And the current instruction is a very un-emotive walk to put focus on the clothes and not the models
