I think part of "quiet luxury" be the materials in the items. Wool is far more warm and durable and less sweaty than polyester. A true wool sweater can range from 150-500 $ easy but the H&M polyester will look the same from a distance. But people don't know what makes these quiet luxury items special, and anyways this used to not really be luxury. My grandfather had a bunch of true wool sweaters. That was just what a sweater was before all clothes became plastic in the 90's or whenever that happened. It's so major in shoes where the leather seems to be skimmed down to nothing or just be plastic , the nails, wood, and steel shanks that used to put that boot together are all replaced with cardboard and foam. Now a shoe that will last you more than 1 year is going to cost you 200 $ and a boot with real nails and steel inside is 600 $. They've been cutting so many corners on the materials and construction that a 30 year old Doc Martin from the 90s might be a better shoe than a new one you buy at the store today despite the wear. That's how our economy has been running, functionality is less and less and less valued and consumers don't even know how to pick a quality product anymore. So we're all cold, our leather jackets start to molt plastic pieces after 6 months, our shoes fall apart and basic functionality is considered "luxury".
@anjirichards83779 ай бұрын
@@SaironiI think you’ve said it perfectly. Surely luxury should be what the material is, not the brand or anything else. What I feel like a lot of people don’t get about the quiet luxury look, is only about half of it is about brands.The other half is how the clothes fit, because rich people who care get their clothes altered/tailored. So it’s not just that Shiv, for example, is wearing a pair of super expensive wool trousers; it’s that they’ve been tailored so that they’re smooth at the waist and hip, the knee hits her knee and they’re exactly the right length for her shoes. It’s the combination of well made clothing *and* expert alterations that makes quiet luxury work and it’s the main reason those articles that tell you how to dupe the trend are bs.

The “quiet luxury” idea is also so silly because it is so narrowly defined and assumes the wearer is part of a social circle that wants to emulate the rich, urban, WASP-y, NYC kind of vibe. An old money woman in Maine likely wears LL Bean head to toe, while her counterpart in Florida might mix Chanel with loud Lilly Pulitzer patterns.

LUKE!!! Your understanding of garments as a form of language is my favorite part of your fashion analyses. The part about everyone doing quiet luxury and it becoming an "EYE know that YOU know you aren't what you're portraying and you're just imitating something that will never be yours", metaphysical thing, reminds me of simulation vs simulacra where images replace the original. The emulation of quiet luxury has become a hyperrealistic and self-imposing image of the upper-class lifestyle and it only conveys that the person wearing that style understands the image of wealth in its most performative essence. We are still left knowing nothing about the individual's identity and everything about their sole ability to reproduce an image. It makes you wonder, what do people want to convey at the end of the day? Do they want you to think they are actually wealthy or do they just want you to know that they understand what wealth looks like as an image? and is there any social currency to gain in just the awareness itself? Amazing video as always!

Stating that when buying clothes, look for clothes that are going to last longer. I have been doing so ever since. I turn 33 this week and honestly the last three years have been so amazing with the way I shop. I have invested better in my clothes and I'm seeing them last a lot longer, and I'm more on trend now that I dress for my body. Instead of trying hard to dress on trend

My thoughts exactly on the quiet luxury trend. You're not fooling anyone by wearing quiet luxury. You can always tell if someone comes from old money or they are just trying to look as such.

I don’t like the idea of expensive clothes that look basic. You can say it’s quality material but we all know that these rich people who wear the row and Celine in their everyday life won’t keep a sweater for decades.

I mean she never said she is superior, she constantly reiterates that she does not judge people but merely gives tips based on her personal style. Though yeah her looks are not my favourite most of the time.

lots of people don’t know or appreciate Anna Bey for who she is and used to be, years ago before her channel really blew up she was a secret gem for “sugar daddy influencer content” and gave tips and tricks for dates, how to keep men around and make them do things for you, appreciate you, buy you things, ect., after she was getting more mainstream and featured on the UK news and started to go viral, she then changed her content to more “etiquette, classy style fashion” the real Anna Bey fans know what’s up and I can appreciate her getting her bag, always 😹😎💜

13:50 I agree about the drapery clothing, I’m very tall so I’ve been used to things not fitting me correctly, but the pure joy I get when the sleeves not just stop at the end of the wrist but even extend further to poof up my arm sleeves when buttoned up? I get really excited!

“To watch them actually moto and cross” took me out 💀 one note, I had a fashion blog in 2013 (lol) and I remember “reporting” about the no-pants trend back then but with really tiny exercise shorts instead of just straight-up underwear- I like where the trend has gone in just a decade, maybe we will be actually pantsless in 2033 😂 final note, even though you only see skinny ppl in the black undies/tights trend and not really on regular-sized ppl IRL, I think this could be the easiest trend to rock for all body types - all you need are briefs, tights, a statement shoe and a comfy sweater! Bonus if everything is in the hot colour of the year, bright red ❤
@KushKiki9 ай бұрын
I agree that the no pants trend could in theory be very accessible to people of all sizes. But when I look at the reference pictures all I can think: "is it fashion or is she just skinny"?

Personally being a calmer more laidback person myself, I enjoy the no logo “quiet luxury” look. Nice soft beiges and creams, more softer muted tones overall, but the funny thing is half the stuff that would fit the category that I have are pretty cheap. Got lucky with my finds in the H&M sale section 😂 It’s just the people that purposefully flaunt whatever Gucci or other big brand that irk me and give it a bad name. It’s meant to be a nice cozy style, none of that bravado

When I have to pick out a wool winter coat, Calvin Klein/Anne Klein have the kind of construction and materials that will last 10+ years. Definitely worth the investment (as someone who balks at spending more than $10 on a secondhand shirt)

Big agree on the wife pleaser trend, it’s such a practical thing that the idea of spending more than 10 bucks a piece on them seems ludicrous to me. I wear them all the time for that exact same “chemise” reason, especially in the fall/winter when I’m wearing natural fiber sweaters pretty much every day, so why would I spend oodles of cash for something that will inevitably stretch out/stain/whatever after a year or two??
@Sofia-pt8ju9 ай бұрын
I loved this video and the fact that you talked about quiet luxury, but I must say that even Anna Bey said in a video that in her opinion the "quiet luxury" and "stealth wealth" trends were quite foolish and that on her channel she didn't want to teach people how to emulate the rich, but to help people improve themselves, even when it comes to fashion; in any case she didn't exactly started this trend, or better, she didn't make it mainstream in any platform because it is many years that she talks about "classy ladies" on her channel and how to become one, not try to fool other into thinking that you are one.

I completely agree with what you said about quiet luxury. People who are born into multi-generational wealth have an aura about them, a behavior, a persona, that CANNOT be faked. They can wear rags and still look very regal.

I agree quiet luxury is talked about way too often. It's clearly not quiet because everyone is doing deep dives, think pieces and analysis related to it and creating content about how to get the look, it just kind of defeats the point of what it's apparently meant to be. I also think that it just gets sold to the average person as another version of minimalism with plenty of get the look for less/on a budget type content that highlights simple pieces from high street / fast fashion brands.

I've always found the goal to "look expensive" (and especially quiet luxury, which is "looking expensive, but low-key, but people still must notice") extremely off-putting. How one can feel comfortable of even thinking of putting a metaphorical price tag on themselves/their style. Not "expressive", or "creative", or even "elegant", but just "money". To me personally that screams of shallowness and, ironically, low self-worth.
