I just did this hike at the beginning of November 2024, and really enjoyed your video after the fact and seeing the differences in your trip. First off I did stay at the Grand Canyon Caverns inn, but I also drove in my truck camper from Detroit to get there, and needed a good shower and bed before the hike! I also paid an extra $400 to have a horse or donkey carry my big pack, and since I’m 66 it was a good decision I think! I was hiking alone, but thankfully ran into two women who were also from MI, and was able to hang out with them almost the whole trip. One had done the hike twice before so she was sort of our guide. We got to the spot right before the rangers station at the campground, to where there’s a sign that says, “High Ground”. The lady who had been there before said that was where she had camped before. There was a picnic table so it did look like a campsite area. Unfortunately after we got our camps setup, a ranger showed up and told us we couldn’t camp there and had to move inside the fence line by the ranger station. All three of us had to quickly pack everything up and trek downriver a half mile or so to find a spot before the sun went down! The next day they had put up a No Camping sign at that spot. They found a campsite the next morning to be closer to where you drop your bags for the horse pickup. I stayed where I was at and had to hike that half mile to the bag drop off area the last morning which was rough at 5 am. Loved your footage of the chain section. My hiking partner suggested putting on a rain poncho before climbing down to Mooney Falls because of the mist, and as soon as I started down the chain section the wind blew the cheap rain poncho over my head, and I couldn’t see anything. So first I was kind of freaked by heights, and now was blinded! My hiking partner kept me calm and finally I was able to rip the rain poncho off with one hand and she helped me navigate the rest of the way down. She also got a pic of me going down, and I had her go first going back up for luck, so she also got pics of us climbing back up. We did the amazing hike to Beaver Falls, but we did not go for the confluence, and it was nice to see your footage. In November there were no caterpillars which was nice. The weather was nice during the day, but it got cold during the nights! You’re not supposed to have campfires, but tons of people still had them. My two hiking partners hiked out, but I decided to wait about 4 hours for the copter ride out. It was the best $100 I’ve ever spent! I then went to all 5 national parks in Utah in my truck camper.

Y’all’s Havasupai content has been sooo helpful as we plan ours! Can’t wait to do the Confluence (although the descent down Mooney has me pretty nervous 😬)!

That’s awesome! When are you guys going?! You’ll totally be able to the confluence hike and I think you’ll find the ladder section more fun than scary!

We go in less than 2 weeks! Seeing y’all crush the Mooney descent definitely makes me feel slightly less scared!

Did this exactly a year ago solo. Was at the trailhead alone at 5 a.m. and hauled ass down. The entire time I was there nobody checked me for anything. My 4th and last trip. They gotta clean it up and I mean literally. Timmy C Arizona

Hey Timmy, that’s surprising there was no one to check you in. I agree that people should not be allowed to leave their things at a “free table”. It just creates waste.

I think it took us 4 hours and 30 minutes to get back up if I remember correctly. But we were hauling! I think we got to the trailhead around 9:30 am or something like that.

Did you guys meet anybody that couldn’t complete any of this hike?

There is the option to helicopter out from the village, but we would not recommend that, because villagers get priority and you could be waiting hours. In fact, on the day we hiked out, we saw people waiting for the helicopter at 4 am and we didn’t hear a helicopter the entire day hike out. Meaning those people woke at 4am and waited at least 5 hours to get a flight out. Know your fitness level and make plan to hike out.
