I'm sometimes asked if, during my time discussing religion as an atheist, I have ever considered reverting to Christianity. Whilst I like to think that I have, that may not mean exactly what is expected.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnqrfqF6Z6t3m7s My ONLY focus is upon the intransigent questions: 1)"How is there something instead of nothing?" Robert Lawrence Kuhn's 'ineradicable, insuperable question'. Thermodynamics disallows a universe from cold(nothing)--1st LAW....and disallows an eternal universe--2nd LAW (stipulates a universe of heat distributing to cold; THIS ONE HAS NOT). 2) And OF COURSE, "Life from non-life". The link above has ACTUAL ACCOMPLISHED biologists, Venter/Hartwell/Altman ALL saying "it's IMPOSSIBLE humans will EVER know the origin of life". And DAWKINS sits mute/deaf/ignorant..NO RESPONSE! He is NOT interested in learning! He is interested in pretending he is. So Cosmic makes it clear there is nothing that speaks to existence of a God in the universe. WTF, he is plain stooo-pid. How did Cosmic get around the first verses of the bible with God creating and giving life? Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space, and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it. We KNOW these laws. We have NO doubts about them. We also KNOW that the laws of nature can't come about without a Lawgiver, God. So if Cosmic wants to pretend to be smart, please give me the laugh by giving your science how creation and life really happened by natural means. Life only comes from life. Law of biogenesis. I think when most people ask this question, they're not asking, "do you ever reflect on your beliefs?" They're asking, "have you ever felt an emotional need to revert to religion?" with the implication that if you have that's reason enough to do so.

Not necessarily. Belief is about truth, not emotion. Faith may be more emotional but belief in it's purest form is only about truth. As an atheist for 54 years, all i wanted to know was the truth. Had I wanted a god which I did NOT! the very last one I would've chosen would've Jesus. I was raised as an atheist Jew. Jesus was NOT the Messiah as I was taught. Anyway, thought Him fictional. That's how out of touch I was with the facts! 😂 But I had to set aside my pre-existing bias as an atheist and dig into the research using the scientific method. I just followed the truth. I let it lead me. And Yeshua actually IS The Messiah. I didn't want it to be true. I hated that it was true. Truth is very offended sometimes. But Truth doesn't require my approval. It's true regardless of what I think or believe.

Christianity began as sun worship, the stories about Jesus are symbolic. He is just a personification of the sun, made into a god figure later on. The sun "dies" for 3 days on December 22nd, the winter solstice, when it stops its movement south, to be born again or resurrected on December 25th, when it resumes its movement north. In some areas, the calendar originally began in the constellation of Virgo, and the sun would therefore be "born of a Virgin" The sun rising in the morning is "the saviour of mankind" The sun is "The light of the World" The sun "walks on water" is just the reflection of the sun on water/the sea. "He cometh on clouds, and every eye shall see him", is just sun rays. Jesus' "crown of thorns" is just the sun's glare, also know as a halo. The sun's "followers", "helpers" or "disciples" are the 12 months and the 12 signs of the zodiac or constellations, through which the sun must pass. The sun at 12 noon is in the house or temple of the "Most High": thus.."he" begins "his Father's work" at "age" 12. The sun enters into each sign of the zodiac at 30 degrees, hense, the "Sun of God" begins his ministry at "age" 30. The sun is hung on a cross or "crucified", which represents its passing through the equinoxes. The vernal equinox being Easter, at which time it is then resurrected. The reason why saviour myths are so similar with a godman who is crucified and resurrected, who does miracles and has 12 disciples, is that these stories were based on the movements of the sun through the heavens, an astrotheological development that can be found throughout the planet, because the sun and the 12 zodiac signs can be observed around the globe. In other words, Jesus Christ and all the others upon whom this character is predicated are personifications of the sun, and the Gospel fable is merely a rehash of a mythological formula revolving around the movements of the sun through the heavens.

I joined a Christian church after being agnostic/ atheist for 7 years. (I was raised as a Mormon) Mentally, I needed a community of kind and supportive people as well as accountability when 2020 hit. I was becoming suicidal that year because so many changes happened so fast. I don't believe I will ever be that Christian that claims to "know" God exists. I do know however that it has been good for me to hope for something, and the support of the church I go to has made me some great friends. I totally understand the atheistic perspective though and will never force my hope and faith on anyone. I'll only share why I go to a church now as a positive benefit.

My experience was similar. For me I had 2 very tragic deaths in my family, my cousin died at 17 of cancer and my grandmother died of cancer at age 58. Both were the same year (1993) and I was 13. When I list them I continued to believe I would see them again in a happy place known as Heaven. It's what helped me overcome this grief I felt. But at the end of the day I found this lack of evidence. When I finally made the step to be an atheist I had to admit I was not ever going to see them again. I was depressed, it was as if they had died once again, I grieved once more, and I finally said my goodbyes and felt with it. As for emotional support and community, I don't see why I would go to a church for this. I am a member of a number of organisations, just people sharing similar interests, I honestly do not know the religious beliefs (or lack of) of the members, there is no need. We are just humans who bond together for a common cause. A church has a common cause, but if you are not part of that cause why would you want to attend?

Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space, and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it. We KNOW these laws. We have NO doubts about them. We also KNOW that the laws of nature can't come about without a Lawgiver, God. I wasn't a Christian but thanks to your videos I left a New Age guru that convinced me of many wacky things that in retrospective I find really silly (like aliens and such). Thing is I've always looked for God, and I did have tons of personal, subjective experiences in that direction. I really could FEEL this spirit, I felt I wasn't alone and I could do anything just by having "good vibes" and "good thoughts" instead of working hard, and while I was feeling like that, my material reality was falling apart as I was failing school and couldn't get a job (shocker, I know). I used to blame it in all sorts of things, but eventually, after watching you videos for YEARS out of curiosity and as an "exercise to test my faith", I started considering that maybe this "Guru" either doesn't really know what they're talking about, or they're not being completely honest, probably both. Nowdays I am an agnostic (because I don't think I know enough to really tell categorically if there is a god or not) but I am extremely skeptic of all religions and spiritual practices, so in that sense I'm an atheist. I consider myself a practical atheist. Sometimes Christians seem to think the debate is only "atheism vs Christianity", but that's way too reductionist, there are other possibilities. I am still open to God, but IF he comes, he might do so through another religion or something else entirely, or might never come. When they doubt the sincerity of those who don't believe I find it shockingly narrow-minded.

The difference between the vegan video and this video is that with the vegan video he stumbled upon something that made reasonable sense. The closest reasonable sense Christianity makes is in pascal's wager. Personal experiences and feelings aren't something you can reason yourself to, even though those are the things are the most powerful reasons people have been convinced of Christianity. Using this to reason that Christianity is true is valid, just not sound because the reasons themselves aren't reasonable.

I listened to you speak here in this video with the same enthusiasm and inner happiness that I might feel while listening to music. IDK why, maybe it just feels good to know that I’m not the only one who feels the way that I do. It’s not my job or my lifestyle to do what you do, but I ask the same questions and engage with the arguments either second-hand or in small-scale discussions BECAUSE the conclusion matters to me, whatever that conclusion might be. As I’ve said recently: I feel an inner desire to go sit in an empty church, maybe even attend Mass. I truly would love to unequivocally believe…but I also know as a formerly diehard Christian that this is very likely nostalgia, on top of my old-world taste. All that to say, surely…if He’s out there and really is loving and really is all that is true, he will not abandon us in our sincere desire for truth.

I was struggling a little with P2. "If a perfectly loving god exists, reasonable nonbelief does not occur" but then I thought "Nonbelievers go to hell" and "A perfectly loving god would want everyone to have the best possible afterlife." A perfectly loving god would not fall short on reasons to let others know he exists because that's the best afterlife you can get. The current life doesn't factor in because the finite is nothing compared to the infinite. I love how the problem of evil is still one of the most powerful tools we have. It's ancient, it's so simple, and this little syllogism shatters most 'free will' reactions most believers tackling the problem of evil have.

I flipping love your openness, Alex. On convertibility, I use the same line of thinking when I have these types of conversations with my atheist friend at work. He used to be really brash about his atheism when he first started working there (probably because he saw the “No King but Jesus” sticker on my truck!), but I could tell he was a good dude… takes good care of his family. We’ve had discussions about consciousness, morality, veganism, Christian culture, the mystery of an afterlife, and of course God’s existence. Almost every conversation, I close with “But I could be wrong.” 😆 It’s such an important thing to recognize. I feel that it lets people check my work. I’d rather lay it all bare than bundle up with errors, right? BTW, thanks to your work on the problem of animal suffering, I adopted a vegan diet. (I basically just applied the free will theodicy.) Ever since, a thread through the scriptures is becoming more clear in defense of the claim that (most Christians won’t like this) the vegan diet is actually a moral ideal for humans. It’s the Edenic diet, the Exodus diet, and the Messianic Reign diet. A very strong case can be made, but the only argument I haven’t been able to rebut is the one that cites the resurrected Jesus eating fish. The only possible way I can think of addressing that argument is super sketchy: it’s to use only the manuscripts that say the disciples brought the resurrected Jesus fish AND honeycomb (of Luke 24:40-43), and then say that, well, since the scriptures don’t specify what Jesus ate, it’s possible that he only ate the honeycomb and not the fish… but then why would his closest friends bring him fish to eat if they knew he wouldn’t eat it? And honeycomb still technically isn’t vegan in the popular sense. So yeah, that one’s got me stumped (so far) as a vegan Christian. Anyhow, thanks for sharing the stuff in this video, man. I’m gonna be revisiting the argument from divine hiddenness because of this one. 👍🏻

There are demonic forces trying to influence you and because you’re focused on what to eat, you are being led astray. Listen to me carefully. Or Him, at least. “Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6:25‬ ‭KJV‬‬ Have you never read Paul’s letters? The man possessed with The Holy Spirit? Chosen by Christ Himself to preach the gospel? Listen to him also. “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.” ‭‭1 Timothy‬ ‭4:1-3‬ ‭KJV‬‬ Read that passage. Then read it again. If it doesn’t sink in the second time, read it a third time. Now, I’m not judging you. I do know this though, what you are being taught is a thing taught by demons to try and pull you away from your brethren. I know, because my girlfriend was a vegan, how vegans view non-vegans deep down. They view them as selfish, cruel and insensitive because “it is entirely possible to sustain life without meat in 2022, why needlessly *murder*? (wrong use of the word but they use it anyway to evoke sympathy as one would feel with the death of humans, reducing the value of a human to that of the beasts. It’s demonic, remember?) WITH THAT BEING SAID… The following is another passage from Paul’s letters regarding eating. “Be willing to accept those who still have doubts about what believers can do. And don’t argue with them about their different ideas. Some people believe they can eat any kind of food, but those who have doubts eat only vegetables. Those who know they can eat any kind of food must not feel that they are better than those who eat only vegetables. And those who eat only vegetables must not decide that those who eat all foods are wrong. God has accepted them. You cannot judge the servants of someone else. Their own master decides if they are doing right or wrong. And the Lord’s servants will be right, because the Lord is able to make them right.” ‭‭Romans‬ ‭14:1-4‬ ‭ It also tells me not to judge those who only eat vegetables, I am not judging them, I am only pointing out what was taught to be acceptable by The Lord. It is, abundantly, the vegans that judge the non-vegans. Whenever arguing with a vegan about why it’s morally acceptable to eat meat, I go to the source of all morality, God Himself and what he has deemed acceptable. God made it abundantly clear to Noah. “Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.” ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭9:3‬ ‭KJV‬‬ Watch out for all their arguments against meat. Know that they have little faith.. or none, as Alex O’Connor. Though he is seemingly very wise. “Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain. Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are yours; whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are your's; and ye are Christ's; and Christ is God's.” ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭3:18-23‬ ‭ “For all things are yours” And in the verse from genesis before that passage. “Even as the green herb Have I given you all things” As for Alex, I too admired him when I was an unbeliever. Pray for him. He is proud. God resists the proud, pray that he becomes humble, though he presents himself as open to conversion, he thinks he knows everything there is to know concerning God. “And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.” ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭8:2‬ ‭ Be careful not to admire him while being a believer, as you claim to be. He is doing nobody any favours, he is deceiving himself and others. A blind guide leading the blind into a pit. See the people in his comments, no offence. “Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: for he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.” ‭‭2 John‬ ‭1:9-11‬ ‭KJV‬‬ Have a good day and may God be the one to guide you. I pray His Spirit leads you into paths of righteousness all the days of your life and that Satan never leads you astray. Amen.

I'm an atheist, but I still maintain an open mind. The only thing that ever makes me reconsider the existence of a god or an afterlife is the near death experience testimonies of credible people. It is obvious to me that they are not lying about what happened to them, and there are many similarities in their individual experiences - the bright light, the flying through a tunnel, the presence of a spiritual being (God or Jesus), the feeling of overwhelming love and security, and a newfound understanding of everything. It is almost convincing to me, at least, of the afterlife part. Alex, I wish you would give your opinion on near death experiences.

I think a 4th conclusion could follow on the factor of time (i.e. individuals having reasonable unbelief at a time in their life doesn't necessarily disprove God's existence, seeing that they could eventually find Him at some future point in their lives), and your journey could eventually be an example. Also, I love your honesty, dedication, and patience with exploring all of this, and... this might sound like an odd thing for a Christian to say but, if the whole "search thing" ever overwhelms you, don't feel guilty about it, it's fine to take a break from it. We tend to focus so much on the seeking aspect of the journey sometimes, and we forget that God on His path also draws us to Him... So if the genuine intent is there and it becomes tiring at some point, it's okay, you're human. And "if a good loving God exists", He won't let you fall away, He won't deny you of the thing you've honestly sought.

It stands to reason SOME well-known atheist / skeptic of the KZbin age will eventually convert / revert. Just a numbers game. And, like Christian charlatans, it’s also likely one already has but must perpetuate a lie in public, in the interest of salvaging social circles and their primary income source. The only thing believers and nonbelievers will always have in common, if they’re being honest, is that whisper of doubt.

I can't even get to _"are you doing what Christians ask of you?"_ because Christianity is far from the only religion. I had to distance myself from my own childhood of taking Christianity for granted, and I came away from that not with some preference for a religion that seemed better aligned with reality but with a feeling of even my own original religion being completely alien to me. I was in some cases unfazed and in others unfamiliar with the beliefs within Catholicism, but now all of it sounds just as random a set of ideas as any other cultural ritual. I can't justify studying the bible without either committing to studying every other scripture or explaining why I can exclude them. I'm not going to study any mythology without a damned good reason because that would be my own personal hell, and I can't think of a single reason why any of the most common religions of history are less likely than any other. I actually tend toward thinking that polytheistic religions make more sense than monotheistic, though their likelihood still sits far below Marvel properties.

This was something I went through during my deconversion as well. Like, before I left my original faith I had just written every other one off as untrue, but could I really do that if I now thought my old faith was also untrue? How many religions would I need to cycle through to find the truth? Frankly, shouldn’t it also be maybe a little easier than that to come to a conclusion about which, if any, are true? It would be paralyzing to go through everything in its entirety in the way the followers say you ought to do it to really experience the religion. In a way, it all circles back to the divine hiddenness argument albeit with some adjustments. If there is a god that wants me to know it exists, it would make it at least somewhat clear. Maybe a deity does exist and doesn’t want me to know. I’m either case, I can’t possibly worship or believe in something that isn’t demonstrated, nor could I do so with something I can’t find. When so many millions of people think they already know the answer, they can’t all be completely right, but they could all be somewhat or completely wrong. Better to withhold belief than to believe a false thing.

When people bring a child into the world, it is most likely that he will end up being condemned to hell, which is established in the bible in Matthew 7: 13-14. “13 You can only enter the kingdom of God through the narrow gate, for wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to hell; That is why many people prefer them. 14 But small is the gate and narrow is the way that leads to life, and very few people find it." There is no way that as mere humans we can guarantee that if we have children they will go to heaven, so we will be responsible for allowing them to come into the world and then their future eternal torture in hell and damnation. Even those who try to search cannot because Satan, other evil religions, the world and the flesh itself are doing everything possible to condemn them to hell for eternity from the moment they are born. James 1:14-15 1 "14 But each one is tempted, when he is drawn away and enticed by his own lust. 15 Then lust, after it has conceived, gives birth to sin; and sin, being finished, gives birth to to light death. John 2:16: “men alienated from God governed by their passions, by the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and by the pride of life” Luke 13:23-24. 23 Someone asked him, "Lord, are there few who are saved?" And he replied, 24 “Do your best to enter through the narrow gate, because I tell you that many will try to enter and will not be able to do so. Now if we as humans deal with this truth here on earth, and we are aware that except for terrible cases of abuse, every other conception and life that comes into the world is consensual in the intimate act, we cannot say that nobody forced us to bring children into the world, it was we ourselves who brought them into the world and if they end up being condemned, we would be part of that process since we could choose not to become intimate in the flesh, either in sin or within marriage. Being an omniscient God, that is to say, he has perfect wisdom and knowledge of what is going to happen and even despite knowing that most of the population was going to be condemned to hell, he allowed existence to continue even when he could have avoided all the pain and suffering of hell for the majority of his creation. First with Adam and Eve knowing that they were going to eat the forbidden fruit and then with Noah exterminating the world through the flood and saving his life and his family. Genesis 2:16-17 “16 Then the LORD God commanded the man, “You may freely eat from any tree in the garden, 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for on the day you do, you will surely die.” Genesis 6:7 “7 Then the LORD said, “I will wipe the human being whom I have created from the face of the earth. I will destroy human beings, domestic animals, those that crawl on the ground and the birds of the sky because I am sorry I made them.” are you forced to bring children to the world? n

Im an atheist but I also draw so I see this immense beauty in religion and it's texts. Though I don't dare delve in exploring the Quran for the sake of my head, it's undeniable how intertwined spirituality, religion and the duality of humanity has been part or the main course in some of the best works of art in history. Be it a novel, architecture or a painting, a manga, I find the concept very beautiful, even in the gratuitous violence it sometimes presents, because I don't have to take it literally but rather metaphorically. So when a Christian asks me, we often delve into conversation about art and I end up saying the beautiful interpretations rather than debunking the literacy or truth of its contents. Although I do get that it is important to question it, I simply found it not worth it (personally) a long time ago. So you could say I am often willing to convert.

I have to say (I'm a Catholic) that I respect this approach a lot. We're all born with/are given different tools, different personalities, different experiences, so we all both face different paths, and take different approaches in them. So there will be people who will take these very rigorous journeys seeking the truth. Others will be born into the faith, and others will never even encounter faith at all. Some people will think they've taken a rigorous journey when in reality they never wanted a god to exist, and they're fine justifying their personal rejection of any faith through watching some documentary and laughing about a flying spaghetti monster and ranting how religions are the source of all evil etc etc. What I like in Alex's approach, is that it looks actually rigorous and honest to me. And it doesnt seem like he just found a way to dunk on people he finds inferior to him for a living and to boost his ego (as a lot of atheist content seems to me). Of course there's some ego and pride involved in being good at intellectual debates, but i dont see it dominating over the opennes and intellectual honesty. And particularly what I like in this as a Catholic, is that from the pov of my faith system, I believe a person who is not part of the Church, but is in the honest process of seeking the truth, I believe that CAN possibly result in their salvation outside the Church. One should never hope for that like this for themselves, and use that as a "loophole" to reject the Church and live whatever life they want, but we can hope for it for others who have nit found faith or have not accepted it, but are in their truth seeking process. so I really do hope for it for people like Alex, if not for their actual conversion.

Insights provided by QM (And QFT) certainly point to a universe that is NOT deterministic and therefore the first premise of the Kalam cosmological argument IS violated.. There does not need to be a so-called "First mover" .. That argument REMAINS convincing, and if Everett was right that's another direct refutation of the first premise.. Christians always tell us to "seek God" but whenever we genuinely do that and still end up unconvinced, they tell us that we're doing it wrong. For them, the only "correct" way of seeking god is to basically pretend that he exists and then look at the world through that lens until you convince yourself that he is real. Sorry, but i'm not gonna do that. I'm not gonna assume the conclusion and then nitpick the arguments that fit that conclusion. If God truly loved me, he would understand my reasoning and provide me with the evidence that he knows will convince me. I also want God to be real, but definitely not the christian god, because i don't want a majority of the human population to end up in hell for not following his dumb rules.

@@2fast2block So your argument sounds like: science right now can't explain everything, therefore god. Consider this: Before you can even try to give god as an answer, you must proof that the answer is possible. Unless you've proven the supernatural to be real, you can't assume it to be a solution to the problem. Even if you were to prove the supernatural in general is a real thing, you'd have to prove that supernatural gods are a real thing and on top of that, that a god did it and finally which one - if you'd claim a certain god did it ofc. Or to put it into an analogy: If you investigate a murder and have a hunch that the murderer was my pink dotted unicorn, you first need to proof that fairytale animals exist (as right now, we don't have any proof for that), then you'd need to proof for unicorns existence (because proofing that e.g. fairies exist is nice, but not really the task) and then proof that there are pink dotted unicorns among the unicorns, and finally that it was mine who did it. Until you've not done any of the above, it's just you having a hunch.

I found the answer to this question In Jeremiah 29:12-13 "in those days when you pray, I will listen. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me." I think the issue is that people who seek God and don't find him are not seeking wholeheartedly. If you are seeking until you tire of it then you aren't truly devoting your life to finding God. Your just looking until it's inconvenient, which is not a wholehearted search. Also, lets say you wanted to get to know someone but you weren't on good terms with them. Does that make any sense at all? You need to believe God is real and sent Jesus to save us from our sins and ask him to forgive our sins. Then you are right with God. This is when the relationship really starts and when you can start finding God.

The Kalam, the fine tuning of the universe for intelligent life, the argument from moral realism, the modal ontological argument, the many arguments from contingency, the empty tomb of Jesus, the post mortem appearances of Jesus to over 500 of his followers at once, the otherwise inexplicable conversion of Paul, the explosion of the early Christian church despite the Nero's of the ancient world, etc, etc. Again, you might not believe that God the best explanation of of these things, or that he rightly follows as logically necessary from the arguments, but to say that those aren't evidence is honestly just not true.

As an atheist, I'm willing to entertain the idea there is something more to this universe than what can be seen, but the closer you get to Christianity, or any religion currently believed in by human beings, the more I am convinced it cannot possibly be true. For example, is it possible our existence continues after death? Almost certainly not, but I guess there's a tiny chance of some form of afterlife -- more likely technological in nature than spiritual (e.g. we currently live in a Matrix Universe). But once you start talking about an afterlife where you either get to spend an eternity in Heavenly bliss or burn forever in a hellish torment based entirely on whether you happened to be born in the right place at the right time to become a Christian before you die -- well, that's just ridiculously dumb.

I've never in my 62 years (as far as I can remember) been tempted even slightly to believe in God - the arguments I heard never rose, for me, to the level of being able to take them seriously, let alone being convincing. None of them did. There's no way for me to even start even taking that seriously, under these conditions. I'm equally motivated to look for a relationship with God as to look for a relationship with the tooth fairy, that is, not at all. Even more so as based on the Bible, if he existed, it seems he would be a thoroughly problematic character, and distancing oneself would seem to be wise: many people have remarked that the way God behaves in the Bible has disturbing similarities to how abusive spouses behave.

Great video. You really got me thinking as an ex evangelical myself and I really appreciate that. I would say I'm open to there possibly being a creator God, but I am not sure if I could ever go back to Christianity. For one I find the historical evidence for the truth of the Gospels to be incredibly shaky. I've listened to historians and looked up the historic facts myself and simply found the evidence for Christ raising from the dead to be lacking. I find that when the evidence is scrutinized it simply doesn't hold up. When I realized that I would have to believe in Christ based on faith and not facts that was the moment my belief in Christianity and God began to crumble. It was at that moment that I became open to the idea that maybe my beliefs were false and that they should be critically assessed if I was to find the truth. I've never held that faith is a good measure of truth. To me if something is true then the facts will speak for themselves. No faith needed. Another huge issue for me is the old testament itself. Particularly where the genocide and slavery as dictated by God himself is concerned. The Bible is clear that God himself was the one giving the instructions and they are not ambiguous instructions. I've had to watch so many Christians make excuses and bad arguments on Biblical slavery and genocide and it makes me genuinely sad every time. I hate watching good people make excuses for the horrible deeds dictated by God himself. As I said earlier I could be open to hearing evidence for a creator God, but even if it were the Christian God unless He himself were to renounce those laws and deeds and to correct them then I could not worship him. I could never be ok with a God that thinks it's ok to own other human beings as property nor would I ever be ok with a being that thinks genocide of another people is a just and right thing to do. The last thing I'll mention is the issue of religious dogma. The insistence that X religion was dictated by God and therefore is perfect and can't ever be changed doesn't sit well with me and didn't even when I was a Christian. When a flaw or contradiction is found in the text instead of being able to correct the flaw one must instead accept it and find a way to justify it. After all it's not a human idea it's the idea of God and God is perfect. Contrast this to the sciences where something is true in so far as we have facts and evidence supporting it. When those facts change such as when new evidence and discoveries are found we then change the theory or hypothesis to fit the facts. In religion you must change the facts to fit God's word because God is perfect and nothing can contradict his word. God's word is truth so any facts that contradict that must be false themselves. This to me is a critical flaw of religion and it's one of the biggest reasons I am an Atheist.

As I get older I find myself both becoming more tolerant of some people and more forgiving of their human failings, but also getting less tolerant of others and more condemnatory of their utter stupidity. I suppose this comes from a realisation that my youthful certainties were often arrogant and unjustified, and also from gaining greater experience of life and understanding that many people are put under enormous strain and pressure and are often denied access to information and education, and so expecting them to always have the capacity to analyse and assess things correctly is unreasonable. However, our smart-arsed young Oxonian friend Mr O'Connor is blessed with a keen and probing intelligence, a high quality education, and the gift of the gab, so he has few, if any, excuses for his failings. Therefore he should stop waffling around the issue of empiricism and accept the self-evident and obvious reality that philosophy is incapable of proving or disproving questions of scientific fact... what is physically true and what is not. Fact claims (eg. that there is a creator god, that Jesus was brought back from the dead, that Mohammed was the divinely ordained and final prophet of Allah, that all gods are merely manifestations of Vishnu/Shiva, that the world exists on the mouldering cadaver of the slain Frost Giant Ymir... etc.) can only be proven by empirical evidence, not by morality or philosophy or any of the 'soft' sciences. And whilst I don't discount the importance of philosophy as a tool for investigating motivations and social interactions and morality, it plays no part in establishing what is actually true as a matter of physical, scientific, fact. Just stating this self-evident truth at the beginning of a debate or lecture should save an awful lot of time.

For years, I did not believe yet I saw my parents' church and thought "you do you." However, I recently escaped a domestic violence relationship. I now can see how exactly Christianity mirrors a DV relationship. Every step and point is a way that an abuser manipulates and controls their victim. Most of this video points out, particularly 3:20, an m.o. of domestic violence. Also, that we need to be convinced we are "sinners" need saving from our "sins" . What sins? Look at the research. Young children are innately driven by love and a desire to help. Yes, we are selfish (something that goes with time.) We feel pain and hurt and may lash out in those moments. But our innate drives are not to "sin" We don't need any salvation. That is another m.o. of domestic violence abuse to keep people trapped in the relationship. To me now, there is no need for debate. Even if someone could convince me that Yahweh is real, I would reject him and the entire disgusting lies that Christianity must convince people of to keep them in control.

Quite a few nonsensical assumptions in your comment. First, the notion that children are driven by love and desire to help presupposes that the child knows how to act in a way that achieves those goals, this requires reflection on all possible outcomes, which is not something you can intuit. Second, selfishness does not wane with time lol. Although it may be convenient for you to assume so in this KZbin comment, it isn’t the case, especially considering tenable theses like psychological egoism.

@@bellumthirio139 In the studies done on Young children, they are innately driven to try and help a person who seems to be struggling. They don't know how to help, but they are driven to come to the person and comfort them in their own way, without any sort of inflection or reasoning. Hence demonstrating my point that it is an innate drive rather than a considered one. There's also the evidence coming from anthropologists that it is our kind, loving nature that is the reason we are such a successful species. I agree that there are people in the world who struggle to empathise with another's struggle. But that for the vast majority of people as we age and discover that the world is a big place, we also realise that our self is small and that there are many others who occupy the world and are different, so self central views wane as we age. I have my own personal opinion, (as well as my bias towards the American culture), that suggests to me that it is the Christian narrative that keeps us selfish and mistrusting of our fellow humans. That when we get rid of the poison that is its message then we would have better relationships with our fellow humans and the planet in general. Christianity is a domestic violence relationship. Every step and message mirrors how a DV abuser keeps control over their victim. It is ok. You are ok. We are wonderful and loving creatures.

I watch this channel and admire Alex for who he is and not for what he believes or the label he applies to himself. Personal beliefs are important for us to discover who we are and who we want to be. I was fascinated by the sciences and the scientific method from the age of 5. I was asked to leave Sunday school because I was “distracted”-asked too many questions the teacher couldn’t or wouldn’t answer. At the age of 9 I finally realized the importance of the scientific method and applied that to almost everything. I let my parents know at the age of 10 that I no longer had beliefs in the supernatural and if I had to believe in a god then it wouldn’t be the Judeo-Christian god. My father was furious and my mother gave me more books to read. I’ve never been angry or condescending about other’s beliefs; however, I don’t always respect a person’s choice of actions resulting from those beliefs. I can abide no religion or ideology that justifies harming another person in any way. I prefer to not label myself as an atheist, agnostic, etc. and happily pull knowledge and wisdom from all religions and ideologies. I value rational and empirical approaches, but will ponder any idea or claim with an open mind.

But he is talking, there, about: his ethic and a universal ethic that: anyone debating with Christians about really: anything at all to do with Christianity can only justify entering such a debate if they're open to joining Christianity provided that the Christian can provide a good enough reason to think Christianity is true; and merely by proving a "God" exists. So then that's always the overarching challenge and motivation for both parties; to see if the Christian can provide that. And the non-Christian must always have THAT as a reason and mindset for why they're even having any debated with Christians about literally anything that has to do with Christianity. He even phrased it in such a way that infers this applies to literally any group, with any ideology, values, practices, etc.. It's ridiculous. Even if Christianity weren't just: * a category of competing mafias, * running a common Racketeering Scheme, and * wrecking lives across the globe (with dramatically entitled impunity), * while EVERY debate that EVERY seasoned apologist enters in .. does so *in bad faith* (no pun intended), * while they habitually and premeditatedly gas light, as flying monkeys, * for a make-believe, malignantly Narcissistic mafia BOSS who "owns this town and everyone in it", * and MIGHT not have to torture and/or kill you (not necessarily in that order), if you'll quickly and fully surrender to the "moral authority" of whichever random sect happens to be pitching it, .. over every meaningful facet of your life, "or else", * and is nice enough to wait until LATER to talk about all the money and other personal sacrifices they'll be needing from you (all of which will personally benefit "the messengers" in some way), * while the progressives support the moderates, who support the extremists, ... -- -- Even if they weren't all that and worse, ... Alex's proposed Universal Ethic for all debaters, ... is among the least reasonable things I've ever heard him say. Although, he follows that up with something else equally unreasonable. He then conflates the generic of a "g/God" with the Christian "God" (a ploy he shouldn't even be letting THEM get away with; let alone doing that FOR them). And then he says he WISHES it were true, because he loves the idea of IT. And what is "it"? Being able to be wholly unethical, by evading all personal responsibility for his real AND imagined failings in life (the specific Christian Concept he was addressing), IF ONLY he really believed a "God" had arranged for that. To Hell (literally) with everyone in the world (since always) who that whole God-arrangement would unjustly screw over (and forever), if it benefits ALEX. So it's a shame, really, that he doesn't believe there is a "God", because then of course He would have THAT as his great plan for humanity.

I think the belief in Santa Claus as a child demonstrates how a person can "feel" that it is true and sees plenty of supportive evidence from stories, songs, the Santa Tracker, the missing milk and cookies and most importantly the presents. It is when the child gets older and actually begins to think about it that things don't make as much sense, such as the speed Santa would have to travel to make an overnight delivery to the entire world, or how does a fat man fit down a small chimney or what if your house doesn't have a chimney. Likewise with Christianity, there are plenty of things that appear to support the religion until you are hit with the right questions to ask and begin to see that no one has an adequate answer. Even if Gods, Goddesses or the afterlife does exist, we simply have no good reasons to suspect that existence as of yet.

I think something that's important to consider when discussing reasonable disbelief is what sort of evidence it woukd take to convince you. You said the kalam seems more plausible to you now than before, but it isn't plausible enough to convince you. What is the metric here for plausibility? How plausible must it be before you are convinced? When engaging arguments these are questions that need specific answers.

I once debated with a friend about the vegetarian and vegan lifestyle and I was super pissed and mad that he agreed with me on mostly everything I said and well agreed that the vegetarian and especially the vegan lifestyle is a healthier option for the planet, yourself and morally a better solution. But he still wouldn’t consider trying it. I mean to be fair he proposed he wouldn’t eat that much meat, but in my experience that’s just a shallow promise and we discussed for so long and this is a really emotional topic for me so it was really frustrating and disappointing to hear just that. Afterwards I felt really bad because I thought I was overreacting (i didn’t say anything hurtful but he knew i was pissed and it’s his life decision and not mine). He felt like i was trying to push him to the vegetarian lifestyle when in reality i just couldn’t understand why we debated in the first place when he is still ignorant after agreeing with everything. I still think I should have reacted in a better way and explained my feelings and thoughts but I didn’t understood them at this point. I just thought I was too emotional and a jerk. Your words helped me understand myself better and I’m really thankful for that. It should be normal to be open to the opposite side and not ignorant in the first place. I too will try to also keep myself up to this standard.

@@tylertyler6418 Yeah I definitely accept and tolerate it. That’s not what angered me. It just angered me that I wasted that much time and energy with explaining and arguing and the outcome was nothing. I felt kinda disrespected because in the beginning I told them that it’s a sensitive topic to me and that I am only spending energy in it if he is open minded (I’m not too sure tho how well I communicated the open mindedness. But i know i made it really clear that I’m sensitive towards this topic and doesn’t want a discussion that doesn’t lead to anything). So I was upset not bc of the fact that they eat meat. I’m upset bc I wasted time and energy in a sensitive discussion and was left feeling like the problems of that discussion (in this case animal suffering) do not matter bc he doesn’t even seriously try to at least either educate himself further, trying more vegetarian products or anything else really. Everything just stayed the same and that was disappointing

I fall into your camp as well, Alex. I've been trying to convert to Christianity for some time, but I don't want to do so dishonestly. So I go to church, engage with Christians, watch videos of religious creators, etc in the hopes that someone will convince me. Because I genuinely feel like having a benevolent higher power to believe in would be a positive thing in my life. But so far it has sadly been easier for me to accept certain animistic beliefs about nature spirits and have transcendental experiences while meditating in the wilderness, than be convinced of a theistic religion. It's not that I'm hostile to it, don't want to believe or dislike believers, it just doesn't seem reasonable to me

I relate somewhat. I went to college an atheist and started going to a men's group so I could give Christianity a fair shot (and hopefully find it false). I didn't find anything they said particularly convincing, until my best friend converted. We argued about it for a while, and be showed me this list of prophecies in the Old Testament. That's what convinced me. These are the most straightforward and impressive proofs in my opinion. Two of the best examples, for brevity- Isaiah 52:13-53:12 describes the servant of God who will one day die for the sins of humanity, and live after this. Daniel 9:25-27 says the Messiah would come 483 years after a decree to rebuild Jerusalem- ~33 AD or so (and that he would die afterwards). A week before his death (~33AD), he rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, publicly announcing himself as Messiah for the first time (by purposely fulfilling what was said of the Messiah in Zechariah 9:9). So, it was written hundreds of years in advance that someone would come when Jesus did, and would do what he is known for. If you're figuring out if you believe or not, that's good to consider. Peace
