Don't know the details of the greenroom conversations here but this was fascinating TV when the backstory kept on moving forward and stealing the show. Angus still remains the best quiz show host ever in this genre, indeed he made the genre.

One of the funniest shows. Some of the best lines are at the expense of our Angus unfortunately. It was a good run.

You can actually sense the tension in the air there. Paul and Ian, though the latter more subtle, really want to offload Angus from the show.

Stay till the end. Everyone thought it was all a big joke but Angus still lost his job. And, Hislop's angry face. I read they resented him because he negotiated a bigger fee but it turned out he was paid the same as them.

I think it was the hypocrisy that stuck in the craw. Show after show exposing other people’s sex scandals and then this. I can understand how Paul and Ian would feel the show would have lost any credibility it had.
@galesito17332 жыл бұрын
Exactly. If he had stayed on as host then he wouldn't have been able to keep poking fun at people involved in scandals.
@thedolphin54282 жыл бұрын
@@galesito1733 Nonsense. Angus had a very honest, detached, self-effacing attitude to his own misdemeanours. The show could have continued on perfectly well with him. His removal was purely prudish virture signalling.
@galesito17332 жыл бұрын
@@thedolphin5428 it's not nonsense at all. Remember when he called Neil Hamilton "disgraced" and Hamilton's wife asked him "if he's disgraced then what are you?" that's what it would have been like every time Angus poked fun at politicians and celebrities from then on. I liked Angus as the host and I enjoyed the banter between him and Paul but he wouldn't have been able to carry on bringing up other people's scandals without becoming the punchline of every joke.
@thedolphin54282 жыл бұрын
@@galesito1733 You miss my point and THE POINT of comedy. If comedy is the routine, then what's good for the goose is good for the gander. Angus would have taken and given in good humour into the future, just as he did between the events and his departure. There's your evidence of how HE would have handled it. The repetitively sour looks on Paul and Ian's faces every time THEY RE-MENTIONED the topic was the evidence of their moralistic stance. If that's how THEY were going to keep playing it every episode, the producer would only have had to ask them to tone it down a bit or blunten their knives. Big deal. It's a fkn comedy show. Since when have political satirists and comedic critics had to be pillars of virtue? I find it laughable and pathetic that they couldn't rise to transcending the hypocrisy and irony of their host being scathed by NOTW, and let the show continue with Angus PLUS his ongoing embarrassment. As Ian said -- "what has become of the media such that the private sex lives of z-list celebrities dominates so much the news". And yet, he and Paul paid such attention to Angus's private sex life. It was really such a storm in a tea cup. It's not as if HIGNFY was some highly reputable serious currents events show. Imo, it was 80% humour, 20% news. Only Ian occassionaly gave serious critique to political misdemeanours. Paul and Angus ran with the farcical line. Angus's sex life could just have been embraced INTO the future rather than moral virtue and "apparent hypocrisy" becoming the point of focus.

@@sigil8386 as Angus basically did every week to the guests they had on. If Paul and Ian had left him alone, it would compromise the show entirely and also be hypocritical. I agree it's not necessarily nice to watch, but Angus shouldn't have been deluded enough to think he could carry on presenting the show given his role in it and the choices he made in his private life

People angsting over Angus's indiscretions and Paul and Ian's ragging need to consider why the producers left such material in the final edit. Either they wished to publically pillory Angus into humiliation and possible resignation OR they considered the barbed banter as just damn good and harmless entertainment. I'm ascribing to the latter -- meaning they are not as puritan or threatened by the kerfuffle as some viewers and commenters.
