"Making movies has never been easier" is exactly why movies are now worse. When you had limited film, every take counted, and that made the films better.

Counterpoint: movies being easier to make, makes it more accessible for people who are talented, but don’t have the means to get film equipment.
@redwillow79schippers94Ай бұрын
@@HunterBoldingVideo Just because movies are more accessible does not make them good. There is a lot of great talent out there but that does not mean that being able to make a film on your phone is better than having access to cameras. I'm glad that more people are able to make movies but that doesn't mean they are better.

I think human beings intuitively are capable of seeing things on the bigger picture level and the quality of movies is just one of those things. It's just like the quality of service anywhere you go fast food especially. Which I totally get it's not the best job in the world but even fast food employees make decent these days my youngest son's making 16 an hour and all he does is push buttons😂. CG has definitely killed practical effects that's for sure and I definitely miss the days of practical effects like Indiana Jones, the entire Alien franchise.. don't get me wrong if it wasn't for the early CG we wouldn't have had T2 because I'm almost certain Robert Patrick isn't cool enough to slip between those bars like that on his own🤣.

I'm pretty sure Robert Patrick IS cool enough to slip between those bars like that. 🤣

The studio''s are too afraid to try anything new It''s all sequels There have been some good films released in recent years but i find myself watching older movies or indie type films
@HunterBoldingVideoАй бұрын
I’ll have to look and see what the actual percentage of movies are sequels, maybe it’s higher for bigger studios, but there’s plenty of indie/smaller studios that are releasing great non-sequel movies.

Okay so I'm not someone who is going to say all current movies suck. However, most of the films I have seen within the past 10 year have not been as good as even the lesser films of the 70's and 80's and even some films of the 90's. Don't judge and let me explain. I have 3 major issues with most (not all) movies today. 1. Character development. I'll give a recent example. Alien Romulus. Now let me say that I didn't hate this film. I just found it really boring. It was mostly because of the weak characters. The only 2 characters that were likable, charming, and fleshed out even a little were the two leads. Everyone else was extremely forgettable. I find this to be a problem in most films today. There is more diversity in terms of race and sexual orientation which is absolutely wonderful but in terms of characters traits, they are all just very much alike or are just extremely surface level. There is little depth of character. Compare the characters of Romulus to the original Alien. Every single character in Alien felt real. They were all believable, relatable, and felt fairly fleshed out for a 90 minute film. I didn't really care about anyone in Romulus besides the main 2 and even then I didn't care enough to even remember their names. Even in lesser slashers the characters were at least interesting and fun. Not all woe is me and doom and gloom. 2. Lack of anyone over 30. I have nothing against hot 20 year olds in films. However, it would be nice if we could see more representation of older people in film. Especially the big box office horror films. Yes, slashers of the 80's were filled with young people but they did not all look like fashion models. Look at Nightmare on Elm Street. Nancy was a normal looking girl. Pretty but normal pretty. Compare the cast of the original Scream to Scream 5 and 6. Scream had attractive younger people but for the most part, they look like regular people (maybe not Skeet but he is the new Johnny Depp so it's cool). You have Randy and Stu. Not exactly Calvin Klein ad models right? Also, we used to get films with an all older cast like The Changeling and Ghost Story. Can you imagine a big or mid budget horror with anyone over 50? Especially someone who looks like George C Scott? Look at the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. The adults were not the stars but they had something to do. They felt real. Nancy's dad was fantastic (as played by the great Jon Saxon). Neil from Nightmare 3. Jesse's parents in part 2. The relationship between Alice and her dad in Nightmare 4 and 5 was fantastic. I love how you just know these people from a few scenes and characters change and grow. 3. Too many remakes and superhero films. Now, I have nothing against remakes if they are done right with directors who actually care about the film/franchise they are remaking. However, many films that are remakes these days are either just poorly done, cash grabs or are films that did not need to be remakes in the first place. The new Child's Play film for example could have just been a killer doll movie without using the Chucky name. Nothing about that movie is anything like any of the other Child's Play/Chucky films so why call it Child's Play? Especially since Chucky is still an ongoing franchise with movies and a tv show. It was so low and disrespectful to Don Mancini. Yes, we always had remakes but they were done with love and care and made better. The Blob and The Thing are great examples of remakes done right. And superhero films. Nothing against them and I do like some of them but it's just been overwhelming. There are so many and most are very similar. 4. I know I said 3 but one more thing. Doom and gloom. Most newer horror films are so very gloomy. They are very sad with sad characters and sad endings and everything is terrible. What happened to fun horror films like Killer Klowns? Ghoulies? Sleepwalkers? Popcorn? If you start me off with characters who are sad and depressed from the start (Romulus), it's hard for me to care about them or the film. It puts me in a depressed mindset. I watch movies for fun not to feel awful the whole time. These movies are also usually very dull looking too. Very brown and drab and colorless (Romulus and Abbigail). What's wrong with color? A newer movie I actually loved that I don't think got good reviews was Lisa Frankenstein. Fun, colorful, charming, fresh idea, cool characters. Love it. Give me more of that. Of course there are some really good newer horror films but it's usually an independent and I don't mean A24 (YUK). I would love feedback on my very long comment

I’ll try to answer as best I can. Point 1: beauty standards, diets, no smoking, etc have changed to where a 50 year old doesn’t look like a 50 year old in 1982. 2. Remakes are gonna get made no matter what, most things get changed fundamentally by producers/executives. 3. Superhero films are the rage, yes. But there are still plenty of great movies coming out in between them. Marvel and DC are learning from their mistakes of flooding the market. 4. Horror movies are too doom and gloomy today, yes. But when you find something like Destroy All Neighbors, or the upcoming Frankie Freako, it makes it that much more special to find one that isn’t just about the end of the world.

@@HunterBoldingVideo Okay so I'm not buying the beauty standards thing. There are plenty of older actors who look normal and not like models. You just rarely see them in horror anymore. And if you read what I said about remakes I actually said I did not have a problem with them. What I said was I don't like the cash grab ones which seems to be the standard these days. If they are done right, that's great. It's just rare these days. I did also say not all horror is doom and gloom these days but most of them are. I specifically said it's the independent films, like the ones you mentioned, that are making interesting films. I did notice you didn't mention anything about character development which is sadly lacking in horror these days. My biggest issue with what you said is that movies are better than ever. Are they? You will never get movies again like E.T., Back to the Future, Mannequin, Heathers, Indiana Jones, and so many more. Look, YOU can think what you want and have your own opinion. I respect that. But saying that movies are better than ever is just not true. Not everyone shares this opinion. I personally think that movies have gotten worse over the years starting in the late 90's. Now, horror has gotten a little better these past couple of years compared to movies of the 2000's but you'll never get a movie like Nightmare on Elm Street ever again. And again, there is very little character development in horror films these days. Probably because younger audiences wont sit through it.

I completely agree, how many movies does it take to be a “good year for movies”? I have at least 25 movies I’ve seen that released this year that I’d consider a “pretty good” movie or better. We have way more movies coming out nowadays than we did even 20 years ago. With way more movies coming out there are way more misses, most movies aren’t good! If you don’t think there are good movies coming out you just need to look harder.
@redwillow79schippers94Ай бұрын
I'm looking pretty hard. As a horror fan, I have not seen many movies lately that I've care for. Everything has to been doom and gloom these days with horror. Broken sad characters from the start of the film with zero fun or levity. No character development or ever character traits. There are always exceptions of course but most horror films these days just bore me. But that is my opinion

I couldn’t put an exact number. But yeah, the past two years in particular have been really strong.
