Not sure they’ve “Ripped the guts out”, but have certainly given it a reality check in terms of it’s capability, the costs associated with invading a neighbour and also the danger of underestimating the resolve of those determined to stop you succeeding. Russia will be paying for this for years, if not decades.

I think "Rip the guts out" was more of the world's perception of the Russian Military and it's capabilities. The world was shocked how incompetent Russia was against a vastly weaker military such as Ukraine. On paper it should have had this in the bag, but it certainly didn't expect that resolve. Russia claims to be the 2nd most powerful military in the world, yet after the initial surge it has taken very little ground in the last three months of conflict.

Let's also not forget that Putin's intentions for his military clearly extended far beyond Ukraine. Right before he invaded Ukraine in February, Putin was demanding that NATO pull back out of ALL Eastern Europe. Leaving The Baltic States, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Czechia and Slovakia possibly later targets for Putin invasion. Putin had vast ambitions, but his military has been an almost total fail in Ukraine. Now with NATO budgets greatly increased, two incoming new members with Finland and Sweden and the announcement of a 300,000 strong NATO rapid reaction force, the possibility of Putin extending his Russian empire deep into Europe is almost certainly over.

And I can asure you, Sweden and Finland are lightyears ahead of ukrainian military defense. Sweden have the best submarines in the world, a very strong airforce and Finlands army are the strongest in Europe. And we can say at all times from 2004 and agression by Russia until the present time that Ukraine had no protection from NATO. So were countries like Poland et al wise to join NATO or not? We see countries not under NATO protection systematically being bullied by Putin, while NATO members enjoy the protection from NATO. Most critics of NATO criticise it for its brutality and not for its inaction. For example when it overran Iraq the losses for Iraq were difficult to estimate but we know they were apocalyptic.

Everyone would have been in, NATO or no. You don't need defense agreements to help your friends or do what you believe is right. Part of the issue with the Russian military and why it fails in modern mobile warfare is the culture that hides facts from lower ranks and does not give them independence in making decisions. Hence so many dead generals. Arguably the only way to change that is for Russia to adopt a more open culture but of course once Russia does that Russians get to see the stupidity of the war and how immoral it is. In short if Russia wants a better educated military it isn't going to be able to mount these kind of imperialistic attacks on its neighbours.

@@bekeneel If US and NATO launched a high end air campaign on the scale of 1991 Iraq with today's planes on Russian forces in Ukraine, Russians would think aliens were attacking. Even years later, they still would not be able to tell what happened besides they were forced to abandon their campaign. Their only hope would be S-300,S-400 and BUK which my money is on US knowing where most are and they would be hit with swarms of cruise missiles, air jamming, drones and stealth aircraft. Look up the term Phyrric victory. The loss of high end equipment and officers is also not something that can be easily reversed. At present Russia is prevailing as it can simply bring a considerably greater weight of firepower to bear than Ukraine can, but that has its limits, and Russia is fighting a war of conquest (the war the Russians were arguiing at the start of this, despite all evidence, that they weren't fighting) against a nation that knows if it loses, it loses it's identity. It's a war of choice for Russia, and existential fight for Ukraine. Once it is done, even if Russia keeps its acquired gains simply for lack of ability of Ukraine to force them out, it will struggle to target anyone else for quite a while, it simply doesn't have the industrial capacity.

As a member of NATO that doesn't have a common border with Russia, the UK has admirably given Ukraine plenty of weapons but only in relation to other NATO members. The UK should feel free to give Ukraine more since it's prefereable that those weapons by used on a Ukrainian battlefiedl than on a UK battlefield. Weapons to Ukraine are not wasted or in any way some kind of lesser use than in the hands of a UK soldier. And, other countries should give Ukraine based on same prindpicles... The issue here is oil and gas. The timing is unfortunate but necessary in his mind. The wounds of the ussr were still quite raw when oil and gas were discovered in ukraine, therefore the ukrainians would likely let anyone but russia exploit it. What I found interesting was that the interviewed expert said, it would take Russia many years to build back their military power after the current losses in the Ukraine. Looking at history (and speaking from a perspective of a German) we were able to build back our military power completely and even surpass WW1 level within 20 years even though we were under very heavy sanctions, forced payments as dictated by the treaty of Versailles - not to mention the world economic crises of the 1920s. The above mentioned economic situation was to such an extent that many thousands died of hunger in the inter war years. This brings me to the conclusion that Russia possibly does not need all that much time to rebuild its military power, even if they are under sanctions (?...)

This so called 'expert' hasn't got a clue. No.1 Russia has only dedicated 15% of their total military inventory for the military operation in Ukraine. No.2 Russia has NOT declared war on Ukraine or fully mobilised for war. No.3 Russia was ask by leaders of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions for help to stop Ukrainian shelling of civilian areas. Ukraine was also increasing troop numbers for a full invasion of the Donbass before Russia started building up troops on Ukraine's border. No.4 Ukraine has been committing ethnic cleansing in the Donbass for the last 8 years killing over 10,000 Donbass civilians which is FULLY supported by the West as is the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in Israel. No.5 Majority of Russian military equipment used was older post-soviet equipment like the T-72 tanks and older. Russia only just sent one of the first T-90's to Ukraine the other week and ZERO T-14 Armata's have been sent for example. No.6 Russia has used more cruise missiles in 4 months than what the USA can manufacture in a whole year. FACT: Russia can maintain this level of ammunition and cruise missile production indefinitely. No.7 Western manufacturing for ammo and missiles can NOT keep pace with Russia's large manufacturing base. Refer to the Duran and The new Atlas for far more accurate analysis rather than a Muppet regurgitating Western propaganda like a dumb parrot. No.8 Ukraine's military is being grind down and crushed, over 11,000 Ukrainian military units now destroyed which is over half their inventory. The West is being defeated economically (mainly due to their own reckless reactionary incompetent measures, which has only exacerbated Western economic woes) to the point the liberal world order is now in question.

What blows me away is the west is running out of munitions supporting a regional conflict. What happens when there is a wider conflict? The weapons have gotten so sophisticated they take months/years to replace. The P-51 mustang went from a sketch to a working prototype in less than 90 days. The F-35 required over 10 years to develop. If there ever was a "hot war" I think these weapon systems lifespans would be measured in weeks. After that we are back to the P-51 Mustang

During a hot war the economy of every NATO country will switch to a war economy. Which basically means a lot of people will either be drafted as a soldier or be send to ammo factories. Also every workshop that has any capacity to make bullets, bombs or engines will basically be confiscated by the government. The analyst is wrong. He is focusing too much on Putin. But Putin exist within a cultural context, the one you can easily see on the State Media and the bellicose diatribes of those who speak there. This means that if Russia (the country, not its president) gets away with territorial gains in Ukraine (beyond the ones they already got before 2022) even after the whole West parade of sanctions and loud charade of support (many that didn’t materialize on due time) then the famous NATO deterrence is left lest terrible, lest fearsome. Russia is already making deals with China and India (and others) to have them as main consumers of their fossil fuels and those are huge countries that are growing, what means that they can easily replace Europe’s consumption. Plus those other countries aren’t that friendly with the West. 20 years for a single individual is a long time, for a nation is merely another step for the next war if there is not a clear defeat or a change on the sociopolitical building of a country: that’s what happened with Germany after WWI: it simply prepared for the second world war, even after losing, due to internal struggles (plus the indecisiveness of Europe due to the advance of communism in Russia as they thought as strong Germany could deter it). Some people think that Russia should be strong to deter China on the Far East. The West got addicted to the prosperity that came after the fall of Soviet Union as there was no longer the Cold War and they thought they could divert military expenses on more useful social spending than to prevent a collapsed enemy to get up again, as they thought that it was about communism alone: it wasn’t. It was a geostrategic stance that superseded communism. And Russia would reclaim what it sees as its natural place in Europe and the world.

One big consideration is the vast amount of military knowledge that has been gained from this war. First, the concept of separate treatment of non combatants has been completely discarded by eastern governments and military leaders. Entire cities of millions have been mercilessly razed to secure advantage. We saw it first in Syria, now on our own doorstep. Second, in spite of the apparent ubiquity of modern communication systems, the power of propaganda can still guide and energise the vast majority of public opinion and backing in the aggressor nation. Third, the concept of mechanised Blitzkrieg, unless much more carefully planned and executed is no longer valid in Europe, especially when opposed with smart precision munitions and unmanned air support. Fourth, artillery, the technology that revolutionised warfare hundreds, even thousands of years ago, is still a powerful tool, especially if you no longer care about avoiding civilian casualties, as now seems to be the case where Russia is concerned. Fifth, a motivated, professional and well equipped national army can withstand a conventional invasion surprisingly well, even against seemingly overwhelming power. NATO will need to take all of these learnings into consideration when planning for future hardware and training. It has already saved trillions in avoiding purchases that have been shown up as little more than a dictator’s toy chest. So let’s take this opportunity to thank the Ukrainians now for these future savings. Give them what they need to achieve the kind of military success that will also make possible a Western political victory (I.e. restoration of a real, sustainable democracy in Russia)

You do need control of the air though, or at least rough parity, to make deep tank strikes work...........a real army could upend Russia's artillery-heavy, slowly-grinding-forward approach pretty quickly through a deep drive behind enemy lines, surrounding the artillery and men near the front.

The lesson I'm getting is that mass artillery bombardments are ineffective in comparison to smaller numbers of artillery carrying out precision strikes. What is the point of wasting ammunition to carpet an area when a few shells or rockets can take out selected targets. The Ukrainians are able to take out strategic targets at long range now. With sufficient numbers of precision weapons they could systematically destroy Russian artillery and command centres while relatively safe from return fire.

@@nerdyali4154 Alistair, I think (hope) that you will be proved correct when and if the promised systems are deployed in sufficient volume, if it is not too late. But to me it seems we haven’t really seen the full effect of this phase of the war yet, apparently down to either lack of training or foot dragging by western governments or probably some of each. And again, the results from introduction of this capability will be keenly observed by NATO strategists who will then be better able to tailor their hardware purchasing programs to better economic effect. But it will still be Ukrainian blood that will continue to be shed. My point is that the West should double down on the supply of these weapons, not only because it is the morally correct action, but also, selfishly, to see how well they work in a real, large scale life and death scenario.

@@realnapster1522 western media is generally not saying Ukraine is winning. They do like to emphasize ukranian wins (snake island). This war is not indicative of how nato would fight Russia. Actually, after seeing how poorly the Russian Air Force has performed I suspect nato air forces are even more confident in their air superiority tactics. If Ukraine had nato caliber Air Force, they’d quickly crush the artillery advantage of Russia. Heck Russia has already had to pull back its navy because western arms, and the himars are causing Russia to push back its command centers. This is nothing but a proxy war and nato is capturing immense intelligence on the poor state of Russian army, equipment and tactics….without losing a single nato soldier

Thus, more military aid only prolongs and extends the suffering of the Ukrainian people.
