I like the concept, but I feel like the crazier and more unique these pieces become the harder it is for them to have longevity. It definitely feels like a trend because they’re so polarizing.

they succeeded at exactly what they were supposed to do - be shocking and divisive to gain a lot of attention very quickly. they've created a moment. it won't be long until it's "remember when everyone made a post about those big red boots?" and then a bit later, they will probably be pretty much forgotten

They are concept pieces not meant to be worn out in public and the sooner people accept how ridiculous they look trying to wear them in public the better... they look cool in a shoot, but they are unpractical for day to day life...

Weird fact: Astroboy's "boots" are actually the feet from his first love, a fellow robot who was turned into a weapon, and died. So there's a dark, melancholy aspect to the playfulness of these boots, too.

One thing I feel like no ones really talking about is the fact that these boots didnt just "go viral" in the traditional sense. Mschf probably gave these to every fashion influencer they could, and because they are so crazy people are bound to notice them. But when you see all your favourite fashion people making TikToks and fitpics wearing these, i think it creates a kind of self fulfilling narrative that everybody loves them. Genius marketing by mschf but you gotta be aware of it. Its not just random that youre seeing these boots everywhere you look, its to make you buy them

I think they're an interesting set of boots just because of the difficulty and challenge they propose to the fashion community. For years things have been geared around enunciating thinner bodies in favour of fun shapes and patterns. And these boots have almost "exposed" a lot of influencers I've enjoyed following for fashion content whether they're great at styling or just being a product of current fashion trends enunciating their body types.

Thank you for keeping sustainability in the conversation here. I think the MSCHF boots are so fun and cute, but they sold out so fast that I wonder how many impulse purchases happened, and how many regrets are out there. If these boots express something about you, and you will be happy wearing them frequently for years to come, that's great and I say go for it. But pause first, and think about whether there is a better way to add excitement, fun, color, and personality to your look.

#PVV most of social media fashion these days is more about marketing than it is about the actual look/functionality/likability/etc of an item. The influencers you featured that were wearing it aren’t going to be wearing it in a month but honestly, at $350, that’s probably a small price for them to pay for the content, attention, and possible followers they got. At this point, we’re all in the Emperor’s New Clothes era just pretending like the stuff we see isn’t utterly ridiculous lol.

As someone who’s spent most of his adult life working out to look like, then get strong like an anime character I appreciate these boots. They remind me of my childhood. As an older person (early 30’s) getting into fashion late in life I wouldn’t wear these but I love them!

I think they’re fun even if it’s just for a trend. Then when the novelty wears off they would make a super cool umbrella stand for your apartment. As far as practibility, I think most people into fashion are past the point where they pick clothes just for comfort or utility. For an extreme example just look at Carol Christian Poell, half of his clothes are designed to discomfort the wearer as a form of “anti-fashion.”

Honestly, these boots feel unique and this brand has it's history for creating outrageous footwear, and it's refreshing to see satirical pieces get such high attention again; However, these will have little to no interest in 3-4 months when mschf releases their next outrageous piece that garners this high amount of attention. I'd argue also that the reason for such high interest in this particular boot is due to the fusion of two vastly different genres, that being fashion and manga, something that hasn't been emphasized on such a level prior to this. I definitely see more comic book and video game referenced high fashion becoming a focal point to an extent this year, especially with gen z growing older and having more fondness for nostalgic content, i.e Retro Systems Such As The GameCube, Older Nickelodeon Cartoons, Old Companies From Y2K, etc.

If the boots came out in the 90s or 00s, I could totally see Björk pairing them with an insane outfit and being an iconic moment for her. Some of those influences you showed just kind of wore a regular outfit with the boots, like they didn’t know what to do with them but have them as a flex. It had more potential than just being a trend.

I was waiting for your take on these. I feel like these type of boots are cool to look at for a bit, but just like the motorcycle boots that got trendy for a bit, they were completely forgotten about when people moved on from them. People have started to get sick of these, so by the time these end up losing their buzz, i feel like only the people who truly got them to be able to enjoy them afterwards. So yeah, i feel like this is a trend that will die as soon as people gets sick of them.

TBH I think shoes have become so hyped in today’s era that the only way to get attention in the shoe community, which at this point seems to be mostly hypebeasts, is to create something that makes: hype. And the only way to get that nowadays is to create extreme, never-seen-before, and “unique” looks. This would lead to shoes like the AstroBoy boots and the other (from a certain pov) “wacky” micro-trends we’ve been seeing lately.

Enjoyed hearing your thoughts! Great minds putting out Big Red Videos on the same day 🧠I would love if these paved the way for infrequent but similarly unreal garments, particularly if they empower independent creators to put their wildest ideas out there. Even MSCHF (despite receiving a decent bit of funding) is still a fairly small company (a mere 10 employees in 2020) which people probably forget considering how well-known they are at this point.

I may be a little biased because I think MSCHF has been doing some of the most interesting stuff in the street wear scene, but I'm team Astro Boy boots. Likewise- they're not anything I'd ever buy, but I'm a huge fan of this sort of "cyber hyperrealism" end of fashion that's becoming more popular. The stuff that just looks like someone copy-pasted a refry meme or outlandish video game character into real life, y'know? When it's done right, I think it's just one of the most fun sides of the fashion scene we're seeing right now - the Hubane icy-spikes fits and the Loewe pixelated hoodie and stuff. I dunno - there's something about projects like these that just are so exciting. And #pvv I don't really do any holidays but Christmas (and don't have a partner anyway), so the most exciting thing I did was make banana bread lol. But hey- it was good banana bread 🤷.

I think with the sustainability argument. You can't just look at it as "is this piece sustainable or not?". Because obviously one limited run piece of fashion becoming trendy for 2 weeks and then never being worn again by anyone isn't going to change the world. However I think it's worth pondering whether this is part of a larger trend in the industry. Limited run meme items. That are released with the intent of generating hype, selling out and never being worn. If that's the case, and this becomes much more common. Then that is very bad in a sustainability sense.

This is a great video! Im a casual fan of fashion and you make me learn about subjects, that I had a vague idea about, become clearer. Its sad to admit that in fashion, the ecological impact is never talked about or aknowledge by no big brands. I wonder what is going to be the pivotal moment cuz we about to need one, like for alot of things in the world. Fashion cannot stay in its own bubble anymore. I also love how you are also an optimistic!! Thats the only way we can go forward in this kind of world, to just wish for the best at every moment. Cant wait for more of your content!

While I think the boots are certainly interesting and fun, they feel a bit gimicky in a way and for a lot of people buying them, I can only assume a lot of purchases are made impulsively. I don’t like that the hype surrounding them is because they are a novelty. If anything is a trend it’s certainly these boots and once the trend is over I worry, how sustainable and useful will the boots really be?

The concept was good, but I got irritated being inundated with all these posts on my IG feed to the point it was causing a cringe feeling. I think being force-fed this was getting an adverse reaction to them. In part because it was more flex fashion than fashion. Some people pulled it off, but most didn't. Good for cosplay tho. Still, I think there were a lot of offerings that were interesting, like the skull bag by Prospective Flow for pre-orders that seemed to be just as meriting for sharing to the world, but were not getting love, because all these outlets (influencers, scamfluencers, celebrities and hypbebeast media outlets) were all gifted these and only covering this one thing.

I despise the boots. I feel like these represent the same thing for me than all the obnoxious Shein hauls etc but a luxury version: Consumption for sake of content and internet clout. But for real, what value, do you actually get from owning that boot for the one pic or tik tok you are gonna take? Use them as a cool looking thrash can i guess? You know no one is actually gonna use them. They could have done MSCHF AR photo app release where you could add those to your feet in a picture/video and it could have hit just as big or even bigger in tik tok since anyone could do that, like a styling challenge I guess. And that idea would bee sustainable and expendable to future projects. Yeah, I don't really like them 😅

I do not like the boots at all T.T, but I think that's because people aren't styling them well enough. They're putting these boots on with a hoodie and sweats and think they hit, but if they're going to be dubbed 'astroboy boots', people should play into the idea of cosplaying astroboy, or alike, and understanding character design, the roundness, the simplicity of astroboy, the aesthetic of futurism/retro-futurism in which astroboy is set in, etc. It also does set a precedent for fashion for 2023, I'm intrigued about where it will go, because I know this won't be the last we'll see of MSCHF's wacky designs.
