As a native Tennessean, I have been to all of these. All are worth a visit. Of note, the vast majority are in east Tennessee. Memphis is the only one in west Tennessee, Nashville and Franklin are right next to each other in middle Tennessee. Chattanooga, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, Knoxville, and the GSMNP are all next to each other generally speaking, and all of them but Knoxville are really tourist cities and a park. For Tennessee, as a rule, remember the West is flat, the middle is hills, and the east is mountains all are green with a body of freshwater reasonably close by.

Native Knoxville Tennessean here. I cannot emphasize enough how incredible the smoky mountains are. There’s a reason it’s like the most visited park in the U.S. It’s a pretty short drive away from me, and it never ever gets old, even after 22 years. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are right up there in the top 5 as well. The southern accent varies across the state too, and across the whole south. I’d say Tennessee has three big accents. “Appalachian” “City” and “Urban.” Appalachian is like the typical STRONG southern accent with long southern drawl and everything. That’s found in east Tennessee, around the smoky mountains (But can also be found around tennessee when farther away from cities). City is what I call the accents found in the cities, duh. Way less of an accent, but still very noticeable. Hard to explain. Hard to distinguish for non-natives. And than urban is like the in-between of the two. Stronger southern drawl and twang, but not NEARLY as much as Appalachian. But also not as “general english” sounding as City accents. This is what my accent has grown to be, since my family was a mix of City and Appalachian growing up. I will admit, our slang and phrases and pronunciation will most likely throw a lot of people off. ESPECIALLY the stronger accents. And no, we aren’t bumbling idiots. Our accent is not a direct correlation to our intelligence. But the people here are so dad gum nice and friendly. It is something I’m very proud of as a native. When I go on vacations out west or north, it doesn’t even hold a candle to good ole southern hospitality. Now I’m not saying that there ain’t bad or mean people down here, of course there are bad people and places all over the world, but the difference hits you smack dab in the face when you notice it. 9/10 people will be joyed to help you out with directions or recommendations. Ain’t no one gonna judge you or completely ignore you. If you trip and fall, people will come up to you and ask if you’re hurt or alright, instead of just going “Oooofff that must’ve hurt” and continue walking. This example has literally happened to me a few times. And i’ve returned the favor to others as well. Expect any tea to be cold and very sweet. And expect breakfast foods to be the best in the world lmao. My whole family’s, and extended family, favorite meal is a good ole nice home-made southern breakfast. It just hits different. We don’t mind if you laugh at our iconic absurd phrases and slang. We know it’s funny, that’s why we say it lol. “Last time I saw you, you were knee high to a grasshopper” “It’s hotter than a whore on a sunday” “You’re too big for your britches” “Hes one more fry away from a happy meal” “That guys about as dumb as a pile of rocks” “It’s hot as the devils butthole out here” “Finer than a frogs hair split both ways” etc etc etc. Just to name a few that I’ve heard quite a lot.

@@hleigh7201 One very friendly town, and low crime rate, to go to would have to be Crossville! There isn't much to do there, other than go to the movies, and walk down mainstreet, but Cookeville is only around thirty minutes away, having plenty of shops, and restaurants. About an hour away from Crossville, would be Knoxville, Oak Ridge, and Turkey Creek. All of these have LOTS of things to do such as shopping, eating the amazing food, and having lots of things to do for entertainment, such as the Knoxville zoo, which isn't too big where you cant explore everything in a day, but it is a pretty hefty walk. 😄

Tennessee is at the top of my list, and Nashville in particular. There is so much to do, I'm a huge country music fan so the music scene sounds amazing, and it also has the best education, job market, and healthcare system in the entire state. You are also right in the middle of the state, so you aren't super far from both Memphis's great BBQ and blues music, AND eastern Tennessee's tourist attractions. And no state income tax on top of all that? I'm smitten.

Your budget will depend on what you can get of course (former Californian here, Fresno) if you want mountains and water, Gatlinburg, while beautiful is fast becoming not a great place to buy. (At least in my opinion) Why? All the cabins are either stacked on top of each other, on a ridiculously difficult and steep mountain road (ski mountain rd for example) perched on the edge of a cliff or all three! Add that the prices are going through the roof no thank you (and I have a business there) now if you go east just a bit things get much better. I currently live in non incorporated Cocke county, about 45 minutes east of Gatlinburg, I have 3.5 acres of Tennessee flat (meaning slightly sloping with flat areas instead of the side of a mountain lol)with 100 year old hardwoods and two streams that’s all usable. I built in the middle of it and have an amazing amount of privacy and better views. I can’t see my closest neighbors even in the winter without leaves.. I have about 60k invested to get it ready for a house (purchase of land, clearing the drive and build site, putting in underground electric and septic and well. Then your house or cabin is usually around 100-150 per sq ft for nice quality. You can’t get that land at any price in Gatlinburg proper. I used to have a place on the French Broad river which is a pretty big river (a little bigger than the Kings River if you are familiar with that) in Del Rio also affordable but these a re small town areas so if that works. East of Gatlinburg in both Sevier and Cocke county offer lots of choices

I really think you should have mention the Gatlinburg Civil War battle as well. To me, its the most counter changing part of history. Franklin was a big broad scale battle, but Gatlinburg battle was hold up by a few confederates against a more greater army of the union numbers plus the pass threw the mountain of Gatlinburg at the time was a quick route and the Union need it to get to Atlanta.

I hate to nick pick, well not really, but as far as Bristol and Johnson City goes several major aspects were ignored by your presentation which would/should/could be of Interest to anyone watching. Below I will mention list some of then. Biker friendly. Not only is Johnson City biker friendly with in town trails like the Tweetsie Trail which is a 9.6 mile trail that follows the old narrow gauge railroad and connects Johnson City to Elizabethton, with many place to access the trail and rent bikes. Right literal in the middle of town Tannery Knob offers 40 acres of wooded trails rating from beginners to advanced mountain biker and it is free. There are 2 lakes in the area of Johnson City, in addition to Boone lake the also Watauga Lake. Johnson City and surrounding area offer some of the best Best trout fishing in the country. From the Watauga and South Holston rivers to the smaller mountain streams whatever type of trout fishing you want, guided drift boat, kayak or wading you will find it here. While stocking of streams occurs on a regular basis both of the main rivers and several of the smaller streams have a good breeding population of Rainbow and Brown trout. Trout fishing in Northeast TN is truly a hidden gem of the region. Guided Water water rafting is also available on the Watauga river in the summer months. Mountain trails galore ranging from easy to challenging are all over the place. Several ending at beautiful waterfalls. Camping opportunities are also abundant in the area.

Good video, but I was surprised to see Johnson City in there, it's really not that great of a town. The fossil museum is actually in Gray, not in Johnson City, even though they have been trying to annex us for years now. I live less than a mile from the museum and can highly recommend it. They dig for fossils right there on the property and have made amazing finds, such as the red panda several years ago, which is now part of the exhibit. I think Jonesboro should have had a spot on the list, since it is Tennessee's oldest town and has amazing historical places all over, not to mention all the annual goings on, such as the Storytelling festival. You can also take a ghost tour through the town at night, because when the lights are turned off, the town becomes a bit eerie and you can almost imagine that you are in another century. It is not a big town, but there is plenty to do there. The only town I hadn't been to that was on this list, was Franklin. I had actually just gotten back home from Bristol.

I have lived in several states and worked throughout North America, nowhere have I seen so much trash thrown out beside the roadways as in Eastern TN. Evidence of the low level of education for the area. Very friendly people until the get into their vehicles. Then they imagine that they are diving on the Bristol Motor Speedway. Weather in this eastern part of the state is marginal. Sun is seldom seen.
