Sitting on Republic, a street whose name was changed from Bremen during World War I’s anti-German hysteria, this building is named after the Ohio Attorney General who fought to restore freedom for all.

Fascinating! I grew up in Norwood in the 70s/80s and was a frequent visitor/explorer of OTR. I remember all too well it's condition then and I'm so grateful to everyone that has endeavoured to preserve and restore it.

It was a very different and interesting neighborhood back then for sure.

Very nice program, thanks. Before Prohibition Cincinnati was the third largest U.S. brewing center , the majority of brewers located in Over the Rhine between Liberty St. and McMicken Ave. There were 100 saloons and beer gardens along Vine Street. Prohibition over night forced the closing of all of this . Large numbers of jobs were lost . Together with the anti- German hysteria of the WW era the economy and German cultural traditions were devastated.

Chrissy, I really enjoyed the video. It has special meaning, too. My Mother was born in 1915 at 1212 Republic Ave. Cheers, Mate.

My grandparents lived on Republic Street when my dad was born in 1926. Great video!

1322 Republic. I hunted for it a few years ago and couldnt find that building. There was an empty space between surrounding addresses, so I assume it was torn down.s@historyinyourownbackyard2363

Cool video. I used to drive on 14th and Republic back in the early 2000s, and man it was rough. So bad you wouldn't believe it. Now it is so much nicer and you can even walk down the street during the day without getting harassed. I am sure it still gets pretty wild at night there, but not like the bad old days.

I would go down into OTR on Saturday afternoons in the late 1970s just to drive around and experience the neighborhood. I absolutely loved doing that. It's totally different now though.

I did something similar in the years before the pandemic when I worked in an office building on 4th St.. On warm days, I used to park (for free) on the street north of Liberty, just to experience walking through the very cool neighborhood. Love OTR!

So important to remember anti-German prejudice. Only now are many of us realizing the impact it had on our forebears.
