Yep. There's an electric tuktuk in Chiang Mai. Took a ride in 2019. Loved it! No fumes and no loud noise.

Last time we were in Thailand (2018), we almost got into a TukTuk that was a scam. Thank goodness I read about it prior to going. Dude wanted to take us to a suit making shop before taking us to our destination. I’m Thai but he saw my family, Caucasian husband, and kids. He saw us a ploys.

The reason they only get so few passengers is because they are charging 500 BAHT!!! That is over US$16 and if you've never been to Thailand, that is a HUGE rip off. A lot of Thai people don't even make that in one day's work.

Natty. Love your positive energy and journalism style. You bring excitement every time you're on. Nicely done. This is a fabulous idea. Bringing traditional transportation with a modern tech flair into the future. Here is a good chance for the Thai govt to invest in the country's future. Cleaner air, less noise pollution, less costs. They could incentivize current Tuk Tuk drivers to invest in these also by giving them discounts and service agreements. In the long run (depending on start up costs, which again the govt should partner with current drivers/owners), these electric Tuk Tuk's could cost less to maintain. Also, foreign investors could help in these ventures, again with emphasis on helping the local Tuk Tuk drivers.

I read the Thai government wan't issuing license plates for TuK Tuks [any form] anymore. I also heard some TuK Tuk drivers are selling their plates for extravagant prices? The rates Tuk Tuk drivers charge tourists are excessive and exploitation. They want 400-500 baht for the distance an air conditioned Taxi would charge 120 baht!
@samthepoet107

That's the reason they're not making money. If they were honest and charge a decent rate they would make money. Reminds me of those men who hang around hotels hoping to make a killing in one trip while being idle for the entire day.

I only take taxis if it is late at night/early morning and the BTS and metro are closed.... I hate haggling with taxi and tuk tuks. Sometimes I'll take a motorbike taxi.... I also try to use the canal boats if I can remember. But if MUVMI is a fixed rate via the app, I'd use it too.

I never use tuk tuks in BKK purely because of both health (outdoor pollution, no air filter unlike cars) as well as the safety reasons (cars are designed to withstand accidents to some extent, tuktuks your head would just hit the pavement if you were to fall on the side...)

Thanks for this report on electric tuktuks. I am surprised that the green aspect of these vehicles is mentioned, but there was not a word about how silent they are bringing a bit of peace in a very loud street environment in good part caused by regular tuktuks. As for cars a gradual evolution to an all-electric tuktuk Bangkok is hopefully part of a better future for the city. For those actually complaining that electric tuktuks are too silent, I say that you cannot stop progress, and we will eventually adapt to the new electric environment of cars and tuktuks: it’s better than a lot of noise and pollution !

Tuk Tuk is a legendary and most effective vehicle in BKK..I like to use in many occasions....Switching to electricity is good to reduce air n noise pollution...But its a little more prone to get accidents..????Cause its so quiet that people and other passing vehicles could not notice it coming..!!! China got many accidents from early periods of electric motorcycles.....Just a thought..!!!!

@toknnomad1424

So basically its the Uber of E-tuktuk with limited range. It's a great idea and badly needed. The tuktuk and the motorcycles are the biggest polluters in BKK. The real impact will be getting this tech to the masses. The gov't should be designing incentive programs for regular tuktuk drivers to trade in their smoke spewers for these newer models. Start installing solor charging infrastructure. Setup financing programs. The asshole king is sitting on $60Billion... maybe he can kick in a few baht. The design of these etuks strays too far from the traditional design... just not the same..

@@lesbianalien3435 one day I hailed a regular taxi around MBK. Turns out the driver had a catalogue with places he wanted to take me to. I told him I'm on my way to Dusit Zoo. He must have been acting dumb because it took him a while to figure out I wanted to go to the zoo in Bangkok. That was so annoying to think I hailed a moving taxi that turned out to be something else. After leaving the zoo there were several tuk tuk drivers outside the zoo. I avoided them thinking I can easily hail a taxi. The taxis that stopped wanted a flat rate to take me to MBK. I refused and kept on walking. Eventually I found a taxi that took me to MBK using the meter. The taxi commission there needs to crack down on these outlaw drivers who give Bangkok a bad reputation. Best thing for tourists is learning how to travel on the BTS and MRT. Those are efficient and can save lots of money and time. The local buses are also cheap.

@@samthepoet107 many years ago there used to be many fake taxis at the airport. And there was a number of times tourists would jump in after they got off their flight. And the fake taxi would take them somewhere and beat them up and rob the tourist. You have to think. The tourist straight off a flight is a high value target. With hoilday money laptop phone etc. Thank god its not like that anymore. So you got away lightly with them just trying to scam you

@@lesbianalien3435 that used to happen here in New York City at JFK Airport. There is usually a long taxi line. A man standing in the arrival area would make an offer. The unsuspecting tourist would be happy to get quick service. Then the driver would take them off their route, often either overcharging them or robbing them. I don't see such news anymore but I was coming in from the Philippines two years ago when a man in the arrival area offered me a taxi ride that I turned down. Even regular legal taxi drivers can be crooks. Coming in at JFK some years ago I stood in line to get a yellow taxi. I told him which route to take. I used to work at JFK and would drive my car there to work so I knew the shortest route. He ignored me then went up on the Van Wyck Highway, the longest way but quickest way around 2 am in the morning. When I complained he got off and took local streets. I told him I'm not paying him the meter rate because he ripped me off. I paid him the flat rate for JFK to Manhattan. The most honest taxi drivers I found were in Hong Kong. I tried giving a Hong Kong taxi driver extra but he won't take it. I told him I won't need the HK money anymore and told him to keep it. Also the good thing about Hong Kong if you know where you are going you can take the train directly outside the airport doors to the city center.
