Welcome to Sam Shutt Farming, daily life on the Hill farm
This is Sam and Oliver plus 4 children farming beef sucklers and sheep in the North Yorkshire/Cumbria border area.
We are first-generation farmers, and we've had no help at all to get to where we are now. We are here to show you our life and what we do. I am also here to show new entrance that it is possible to start from scratch. Being strong-willed, determined, and a lot of hard work, you can do it.
We are both from farming backgrounds. I grew up on a family dairy farm. Milking from a very young age.Working for my uncle when i left school. I've learnt everything from him and grown ever since. I met Oliver when I was 16 he was 15. We started with a few sheep when we met and have built up over the 16 years to where we are now. We took on a 500-acre hill farm in 2019, currently 5 years into the tenancy.
Also, here to show people women can be useful in the agricultural world.😉😁

First you have to have the right caracter and the body strenght to do this heavy work every day Youre also a wife, mother there is a lot of housework too pfff i,m 67 and have a tea garden in Holland i bake a lot of cakes and serve 42 different tea,s And ofcourse a big garden It,s a lot of work We do this from april till october I wish you all good luck and hope that you can keep it up (my husband looks a lot like yours hihihi)

Mabel is a star.I had that with the ewe prolapsing her gut when I first started keeping sheep. It was a Prolific Lleyn who ran out of space. The hunt killed her for me and disposed of her. She had wait, as the hunt were hunting that day.

Schools don't teach half the stuff about life in general. All the stuff they learn never gets used in the real world. Money, strength, ambition, saving for what they need, not what they want. life, and death all this will be learnt hear with me then hopefully they are one step ahead at school 🤣🤣😍😍 ahh great thanks for watching 🤣

My sheep have lambed in the field and are still using the same pen they lambed in as a shelter (no lime). I add hay to it every day. With this wet weather the sheep are lying down in the muck and mud and I've no problems with the lambs. They are not vaccinated or wormed with anything artificial. I think low stress and high nutrition is key 😉

Ewe began prolapse and just kept pushing only seen it in texel cross ewes. Not suprised Oliver not impressed with Charlotte, sheep a bit lean I think waterymouth bug on ewes udder could try drysan in one shed

Good stuff , give your Cheviots a bit more width of pen in the byre pens to stop them lying on them .Your wooden pens are great ,you should try big cable ties instead of twine as a means of securing the hurdles in the center , because as sure as there is a God in heaven a lamb will hang on the twine . Its called a rectal prolaspe and ive had many in my time , especially my Beltex cross ewes that are carrying twins and had a history of a difficuit previous birth, there is no cure and ive even had in ewes during the summer do it and I new what you were going to show as soon as you mentioned it. Great team work, please stay safe and take care of your health and that of the wee one onboard.

Weakness in the uterus wall difficult lambing or possible tear last years lambing. Have seen in cattle and ewes

I never disinfected my lambing pens and we didnt get many things go wrong with them so I reckon it's an old wife's tale

Have seen it Sam had two this year,there is nothing you can do it happens very quick and they die very quick they reckon there is a weakness In the ewes vaginal wall and as the pressure increases it rips and her intestines just come out.Usually a ewe carrying multiple lambs are prone to it.

You need a labourer. I wouldn't charge a fee. Spreading the lime isn't solving all of your disease issues but it's one of a few preventative measures which wouldn't cost much to do, so I don't get why grumpy boy Oliver didn't want to do it. It would be less lifting and carrying if you had an automatic watering system in all the sheds...is that a cost issue or another of Oliver's decisions ?

It's easy done fill the drum with water simple then fill buckets. Can't afford automatic watering systems for the pens. He wasn't grumpy today 😍🤣

@@Sam-shutt either wear gloves on both hands at all lambing times, or be better at editing out the occasions when you don't put them on. It's probably past the time when your baby could be affected but I am not a medic so am just going on what my friend did. Arm length gloves on before touching any animal. The problem is that Oliver and the kids aren't gloved but they then handle gates, forks, spades etc which you then touch too. So, it's practically impossible to avoid coming into contact with sheep 'bodily fluids' unless you stay in the house. That's not going to happen...

Iam then thr second trimester so she said was best time to be rather than the beginning or the end. So iam not worried. And if people don't agree, then so be it 😁 I will try harder 🤣

@@Sam-shutt It's your personal decision, so do what's right for you. My mum ran the mum's race at my primary school when about 8 months pregnant. She was third place in one race and a member of a team which won the relay. My brother was born fine five weeks later.

Keep the navel’s iodined and you should be ok with just mucking out pens in between ewes. If you can let the dry before bedding
