Hello 👋
Welcome to Sam Shutt Farming, daily life on the Hill farm
This is Sam and Oliver plus 4 children farming beef sucklers and sheep in the North Yorkshire/Cumbria border area.
We are first-generation farmers, and we've had no help at all to get to where we are now. We are here to show you our life and what we do. I am also here to show new entrance that it is possible to start from scratch. Being strong-willed, determined, and a lot of hard work, you can do it.
We are both from farming backgrounds. I grew up on a family dairy farm. Milking from a very young age.Working for my uncle when i left school. I've learnt everything from him and grown ever since. I met Oliver when I was 16 he was 15. We started with a few sheep when we met and have built up over the 16 years to where we are now. We took on a 500-acre hill farm in 2019, currently 5 years into the tenancy.
Also, here to show people women can be useful in the agricultural world.😉😁

I got a teat panel and some tubing from the agritrader and rigged up a large bucket with holes drilled in the lid. I had a second bucket inside with the milk replacer. I found there was no need to keep the milk warm, that way it didn’t ferment and the lambs didn’ pig out. Very liberating. Your sheep all look so clean and tidy. Would waterproof dungarees in the lambing shed save on the washing. I liked to be able to just hose myself down. I was interested to see how the Herdwick x turned out. 👍

They wound me up 🤣 hoping we have another but it's pot luck . 15 years been breeding cheviot sheep and last year got a black one. So happy 🤣🤣

@@Sam-shuttThe nearest I got to a black sheep was one with a large black patch. Sounds like you want to breed some if you are thinking abut a black tup,

Charlotte Ashley has got a machine on hire for a month or so that heats up some water and then mixes the right amount of milk powder and has got several tubes that go to teats that you can strap on to a hurdle or gate bar for feeding pet lambs.......works well i think.....i think she said it was £250 to hire it . That's a good sheepdog you got......love watching a good dog working the sheep

Yes she's good but geting old now yes she has I can't bare to pay 250🤣 unless we had 40plus then be okay. Al have a look see what there is. Thanks x

Take the sheep that has lost their lambs if you can’t draft on a new one. Put them in pens and lock them in place, and you got natural feeders for your pet lambs 💪🏻 And your man should be glad that he found a stronger women then him self. He can start with talking to you with some respect ☺️ keep up the good job. Best regards from Sweden!

Every sheep thats lost lambs gets tied up and a lamb onto them. So in a way its good but still plenty left 🤣 will try find feeder cheap one

I wanted to say the same, but didn’t know how to put it respectfully. A grumpy old man while he’s still young. I like your advice with the milk arrangement. One year I had some lamb-less ewes and no spare lambs, I lined them up in head yokes and milked them to make yogurt, your idea never occurred to me though.

How about a cd player or even an old tape player for outside Sam. Long hard days and graft but worth it I need to find me a farmer as a husband I think haha, your hubby is lucky to have you.

been a few days i have been out taking my photos and been long days but not as long as you guys, or as hard work. glad to see you are having more success with the lambs hope you got to cash in on the ramadan price rise. keep up the great work the one over riding fact since i started watching your channel the weather up there is more than a bit crap, hope the finances work out for you guys you deserve some luck

The quads all look strong. The weather here in NE Scotland was reasonable today but rain and wind is coming in again overnight and all day tomorrow. Paying bills is important...you will end up being denied credit by main suppliers, utility companies etc , which is bad !

Try a mineral bucket with teats in u can tip in top and can feed few at a time

Hi sam.would u not sell some of them suck lambs.a bag of powder milk wont last long with that amount of lambs and the price of it.hopefuly ye will cash in on the hoggs when u sell them.bills are the story of our lives.great video.love these long videos.take care and all the best.greetings from ireland
