I'm American and cannot get over how everything is just mixed up together in this country. No zoning at all like you get back home. From the drone you can see residential, commercial and industrial units all side by side. I personally think it works better. Zoning that we have back in the US really does breed car dependency and miles of boring subburbs. I love how here you can just head out down to the local shops by foot for groceries or wine! 😂

Like you say, zoning requires transport to get to so the principle is now mixed employment and residential to encourage less transport reliance although it is to a point. We do still have industrial estates purely zoned for business on the outskirts of towns and cities.

it's a bi-directional expressway hence the red crosses...for example you will have 4 lanes going into the city during rush hour and 2 coming out....then it is reversed at night 4 coming out and 2 going in...

I worked on the Tinsley Viaduct for 2 years. We were strengthening the bridge to allow heavier trucks coming from abroad. We put in 250,000 bolts and put on steel plates. To add to the strength

I really enjoyed working there, except being stuck in a box for 10 hours a day lol. Because of the logistics we were not allowed a tea break, but got our 10 minutes added onto our 30 minute lunch break.

The concrete under the motorway constantly has issues and as you say injected or repaired. I used to work under the motorways where they would inspect and repair. A massive cost to the government to be fair as they pay a fortune out. I worked with one guy and he used to rush his inspections or make the paperwork up and he alone cost them half a million pound in work not done properly lol. I heard the reason it has issues is there were many different contractors and the mixes / constructions of the beams was inconsistent.

A38 (m) called tidal flow, not a smart motorway, but has similarities. 7 lanes no central divider, a buffer lane with no traffic in either lanes 3, 4 or 5. Typically 3 north 3 south, but in rush hours it becomes 4 in peak direction and 2 lanes in the opposite. They post X or 50(max) across the whole motorway as a reminder, not to stray into opposing traffic.
