It’s hard to imagine Dublin being anything other than a sprawling city, but at one point it was largely contained within the boundaries of Viking earthen defences and laterly the Anglo-Norman Stone city walls which appeared between 1100 and 1125.
Mainly used for protective purposes, these imposing walls were massive limestone structures towering to between 5m and 7m and up to 3m wide in places, the recreated battlements from below St Audoen’s Park give you a sense of how formidable they once were.
