Thanks Stuart, I bought the Stanley version of this when it first came out ( I think around 4 years ago, could be a little longer ), I quite like it but am not entirely convinced, certainly it's better in some situations than others ! It's a handy addition but doesn't completely replace either a standard adjustable wrench or a ViseGrip/Mole Wrench, having said that I'm happy to have all three, of course you could also include a Knipex Plier Wrench if you can justify the £50-60 price tag, it is a great tool though, I haven't tried the Wera Jokers yet, but they also seem popular ! You start off with one tool to "replace" many and end up with even more tools in the end ! 😉🤣
@andygardiner65268 күн бұрын
Speed and fit on good heads, the Knipex win. Grip, locking on damaged heads or other rounded stock, Mole grips. If stuff has good heads and is really cranked up I'd either use a spanner or a socket. I almost feel these "grippy spanners" are a solution looking for a problem.
@apollyonsirius83779 күн бұрын
Craftsman used to make these, when they were still owned by Sears. I've had mine for at least ten years now, and they're definitely better than a standard adjustable wrench. Bit of a pain to constantly operate the lever, but they don't round off fasteners, so it's a good trade off if there's only room for one wrench in the tool bag.

Handy tool for nuts inside the car and bolts outside. The Wera Joker Self-Setting Spanners are my favorite "adjustable" spanner as the tighter you pull on the spanner, the tighter the spanner grips the nut/bolt head. Not that cheap but a pleasure to use.

I bought the amazon version last year and found it didn't really lock on enough. Seems the tolerances in the mechanism on the Amazon version are not taken up when you clamp. Just measured the jaw movement on mine - nothing during clamping. Buyer beware.

I have the Stanley 85-610, 10" version. I've used them a few time where I don't want to round off bolt edges of flats and they have worked in most cases, the jaws are very soft and do deform a bit. The tool looks forged so are they not hardened or is it just cheap Chinese steel?

James May calls adjustable spanners “the work of the devil” as you should be using a proper spanner of the right size not bodging with an adjustable. I suspect he would not look favourably on these either. They do look neat but I couldn’t possibly buy a Makita Blue one as it wouldn’t match the workshop, do they do them in Dewalt Yellow or Bahco Orange?
