**UPDATE** We ordered the correct Bosch part number, but what was sent to us looks to likely not be the tabless model / we don't get tabless in the US. We're comparing Core to ProCore and there should be a + symbol on the outside for ProCore+. In contact with the retailer, unsure if it was just a mistake or simply what we get in the US for not having Bosch Tabless here yet.

If you do a New test with the correct Bosch. Could you do a use charge use charge back to back test? If they stay cooler you should be able to charge faster due to no time wasted for cooling down before charging.

But I watched a lot of other tests with BoschProCore+ (Tabless) and they all showed a big step up in performance. Really looking forward seeing you retesting this with the correct battery. The Bosch 8Ah Procore(1600A016GK )is the regular pack with normal cells and only costs 120€ in Germany. They have a tabless Pack called Procore+ 8Ah (1600A02X00) which costs about 180€.. The 8 AH Profactor seems to be what we call the normal Procore over here in germany.

Many years ago my main phone was an Oukitel K10000, 10ah, it lasted a week between charges, it was so good. Even if I used it really heavily, I still wasn't able to kill it in less than five days.

As a Ryobi guy, it's rare to get a W on this channel. What's ironic is the shear amount of Ryobi tools that don't care what battery you use. The lights, radio, fan, multi tool, caulk gun, etc are just as good on an old 1.5aH black as a fancy boy. Recently bought the 6aH and 8aH for my vacuum. Might have to get me an edge and see what's what

You can even run most tools (for a brief amount of time, at least) on the old blue NiCd 18v batteries.

Because all those tools don't require higher amounts of power n don't drain batts quickly. But for the ones that do, those small batts are more of a hassle than their worth. I'll wanna grab an edge battery just to see if it'll make some of their tools more powerful, like their hp hammer drill.. if it could add a nice boost in power, it would make it more of an actual pro grade level tool. Maybe

The Ridgid was impressive to me. Smaller than the 3amp Octane and the new 4 still had a large board, same size batteries and a heat sink but was still smaller. For it's size to power it's a winner. Hopefully TTI will let Ridgid have a 6,8,or a 12map version here soon 🤞🏻

@Toolguy1 pliers wrench is a very mediocre tool. I own the 12”, 10” and 7-1/4”. I literally can’t think of a use case that I wouldn’t rather use a high quality adjustable wrench or a pair of Cobras. The head on the pliers wrench is absolutely massive to actually fit anywhere tight. That’s just me and my opinion, but I respect it if you like them. What do you use them for? For work I carry 10” Cobras and Twin Grips. I’m convinced Cobras are one of the best hand tools ever invented and I don’t say that lightly.

Really great to see! I’m a gang green guy, and just googled to see that Metabo HPT is also releasing a tabless battery. The 391991M T-PWR battery is listed on their site, but not yet in stock at either the jungle site or ACME tools. There is a matching UC36YSL2 faster charger as well, but would most love to know whether the green tools can benefit as much as Ryobi’s offerings.

We were putting up some trusses the other day in Michigan during the cold plunge and The forge is surprisingly resilient to draining can use it in a circ saw for days between charges.. we were mostly cuttimg 2x4 but did have to rip down couple sheets of osb ...the forge didnt skip a beat when it did die all i had was a xc 5.0 the thing wouldnt even finish a cut without cutting off

The forge is fairly new the xc is probably a year old.. also i got the forge with the saw so its my only "high" draw tool only really run drill impact driver and oscillating tool ...

If the saw in question is the new blade right that comes with Milwaukee's thick kerf blade, (2834-20, I believe) Milwaukee stated that the saw was designed to be run with the Forge batteries, in part due to the tweaks made to get the RPMs up to their ungodly spec. On that battery, the saw runs strong.

That Bosch battery you tested is not the The Tabless Pro Core Battery. That is the regular Pro Core Battery, what you all call Profactor in North America. The Tabless ProCore Battery is the ProCore+ 8AH 18V battery. Difference. Please Order those from Europe and then test it? Much respect for your work always sir. Love your videos a lot.

Lets be honest, a lot of these tools are in the hands of weekend warriors that don't push them anywhere near what they're capable of. I think Team Red and Team Yellow in particular know a very large chunk of their revenue comes from DIYers strolling through Home Depot.

No I think they’re realizing that there are fewer “full fledged mechanic shops” using cordless tools than what they thought would happen. Most of us are not only heavily invested in pneumatic, they’re just lighter & more agile. Plus I still have yet to see a cordless impact wrench have the reverse torque to cause me to buy one. I will never deny the portability convenience of cordless but in my shop, air is king. It probably always will be.

Hack = Buy a tool, get a free battery. Then you return the tool for a partial prorated refund and keep the battery. Home Depot does it all the time. Lowe’s just started doing it. Previously, you could only return both to Lowe’s for a full refund.

Thanks for testing work-load runtime. This gets complicated as it depends upon the specific tool current demand and voltage cut-out, but this is the kind of comparison we need rather than just amp-hours. Even watt-hours fails to tell us how long the tool will actually provide useful work under load because higher currents always result in less total work, but these tabless cells do appear to have substantially less voltage drop and that's what progress in this arena looks like.

Did you buy the right Bosch battery? In the UK the Bosch tabless batteries are called ProCore+. ProCore (without the plus) are the old 21700 packs.

Here in the US our regular batteries, even the ones still at LOWES simply say Core. But you may be correct, we ordered what Bosch shows as the right model number for tabless, but we have no "+" symbol on ours. So talking to the retailer we bought it from, it could very well not be tabless or we just dont get anything similar in the US.

The Bosch ProCore you testet is not the tabless pack from Bosch. Its more less the Profactor you get here in Germany. The ProCore+ is the pack with the tabless-cells. Its Like with Metabos LIHD (non-Tabless) LIHDX (tabless). Thats how it is in Germany, maybe its diffrent in the US.

Interresting results. I see the issue with the Procore 18V + was already mentioned. The standard battery with 21700 cells we get over here in europe is the regular Procore battery. The Procore 18V + is the one with tabless cells... however when Procore was announced, Bosch made statements of how they are able to actually deliver all the beans from the cells to the machines. They clamed they would use very thick wires to connect the cells in order to handle all the AMPS. I'm shocked you found a thin foil welded in DIY style to the cells

This is an awesome video. I really would like a better comparison of this battery design against all the other Milwaukee batteries though. Honestly, I have way too much invested in the M18 product line to change at this point, so I don't care about any other brands even though it looks like they are on top of their game. The only thing I really care about is whether it's worth it for me to buy some of these batteries for my saws and grinders. It makes a really big difference, especially when you're using a metal cutting saw. Because when the voltage drops the saw cannot keep running and it will stall mid cut and when it does the carbide on the saw blade tends to break and that gets expensive really fast. I found that the 9.0 and 8.0 batteries that I have are the worst at only cutting well when they are at full charge and do not perform as well as the 5.0 XP batteries at just maintaining the grunt to just keep cutting on the metal saw. I don't think it matters so much on wood because it doesn't tear up the saw blade when it stops. This sort of data was actually visible somewhat when you were comparing the Ryobi to the Milwaukee on the grinder test, but you didn't include very much data on that on the Milwaukee batteries. I really wish you would show us a comparison like that on all of the Milwaukee batteries. Honestly, for almost every other tool that I use I don't notice much of a difference on which battery I use. But the grinder, saw, router, and the leaf blower absolutely need to have the right battery for the job. The thing that I find interesting is that The 8.0 and 9.0 batteries I have perform very well on the leaf blower but on a metal cutting circular saw especially they do not perform as well as the 5.0 XP.

In the DeWalt system, the charger balances the cells I think? The batteries are completely dumb, no electronics inside.

​@@connerlabs The toolscientist video (#9) found no balancing circuitry in several chargers, not even in a model from 2023. It looks like these chargers access the individual cells or parallel packs only to check for single cell/pack over- and undervoltage. He tested this by "unbalancing" a pack and monitoring the charge current to individual cells/packs. There was unfortunately no balancing current to measure. Idk, I find this very weird for an expensive product. Although, knowing how easy and cheap balancing can be realised, even the crappiest no-name product should have battery balancing these days. "Should" as in "balancing should be mandated by law".

I realize 4Ah is less than ideal for a 1/2" high torque, but comparing Ah apples to Ah apples lets you extrapolate how much improvement an like sized Edge battery has over just an HP or High Performance.

Bought the wrong Bosch battery. Procore + is the tabless version. Completely thrashing Bosch on wrong grounds. Usually there is Samsung 40T in the 8.0ah pack. Samsung 30t in the 5.5ah Procore pack. Test the Procore+ battery and come back to us with the results.

My understanding of why Bosch battery cells are unjacketed, is that it improves heat dissipation. Helping to keep the overall pack cooler. All least that's what Bosch have always told me the reason is. My own experience with them, does lead me the believe they might be right.

Bosch have some good videos on their Pro Core packs. You are right, it's mainly about heat dissipation, the cells are even put into the enclosure while it is still hot from the mould. This minimises any airgaps, if you have air gaps in the packs they can end up acting like a thermos trapping the heat inside. They also have a small wire inside each sleave so the battery can read the voltage of each individual cell. Also as with other Bosch batteries that white piece inline with the copper bus bar is a standard replaceable fuse. Other brands have a fused PCB track which will prevent a fire but the battery must be binned after that, on the Bosch you just replace the fuse and it's back in action. The Pro Core packs are only 3mm wider than the standard one which means they can fit in all the existing tools vs Makita who don't want to make packs with 21700 cells for tool compatibility.

As mainly a dewalt guy, my experience is that 5ah xr and flexvolt-batteries are the most durable and dependable batteries. I've had several 5 ah powerstack who all seem to perform poorly in humid and rainy environments. Mind you I work in snow and rain with my tools

im not a batteries engineer but i suspect the biggest difference in tabless batteries would be energy density and a flatter ESR/wear curve, having the load on the cell be distributed along the whole surface of the chemicals inside should help a lot with the ESR degradation on high power cells. tbh tabless sounds like an interesting tecnology for nimh cells since those are a technology that has always suffered from a relatively high esr compared to cadmium or lithium, making a tabless nimh cell should help a lot with power output and charge speed too.

Another great video! You guys should REALLY start including the area under the curve to generate bar graphs to compare batteries. Curve shape is just too ambiguous! Back in the day people would just print the curve, cut out the curve and weigh it on a sensitive balance, needn't do that, use a program but dont toss good DATA!

I’m rebuilding my Milwaukee v28 battery packs right now I’m using A123/26650 cells which can handle up to 50A continuous draw per cell and 120A max pulse discharge. The 8 cell pack should be one of the nastiest battery packs I’ve ever seen. It will definitely be interesting to see how the tools perform they were very strong when new but the original batteries in these packs were not great for longevity and was new tech at the time.

As a Makita XGT user, the BL4040F released in early 2024 and we STILL can’t buy the damn thing in the US. Fucking ridiculous to be honest. I hate that Makita does that, but their 40V tools are wonderful. Nice video!

at this pace they might beat Bosch to a North American release, though. Their tabless ProCORE 18V+ batteries (not featured here) were released in Europe over 6 months ago, but Bosch doesn't even have a planned release in North America

I'm not sure if this bosch battery has even tabless cells inside, here in Europe the tabless one is named ProCORE18V+ 8.0Ah the regular one is without the "+", your battery looks like the standard one

That is correct. He has the standard ProCore Battery, not the Tabless ProCore+. Torque Test Channel got the wrong battery that is not Tabless.

It'd be really neat to test out Dewalt batteries using their rotary buffer/polisher DCM849B. I use it daily working on gelcoat. I've never used or seen a tool so power hungry. It wants ALL the watts! Using any battery under 6AH (besides the 5ah powerstack), the tool almost becomes useless. There's such an insane voltage drop under load! I think it'd be great at comparing batteries. Just a thought. Thanks for the great videos.

I really want you guys to come up with a way to supply a relatively unlimited amount of amps to tools, at various voltages (the wall can't provide enough amps, so you'll need to come up with some kind of frankenstein contraption using some really beefy batteries that were never meant for hand tools), and see what tools are simply not being given enough juice. Although it would be expensive, i'd like to see how high you can go on the voltage before they finally let the magic smoke out.

Obviously we'd love to see the Ryobi 4Ah Edge on an impact vs the old 4Ah or the 3 Ah. While the performance values that you can test are important, the hidden benefit is hopefully more years and cycles of service life in a heavy use environment.

The last order i placed with milwaukee i saw a little psa from them saying if you warranty a xc6.0, ho-xc8.0, or ho-hd12.0 battery you have to request a forge battery’s part number as a replacement. That and just straight up on those batteries’ page it says discontinued and that the forges are the replacement

Tabless cells are putting up some impressive numbers for sure. The pouch cells were some of the first with it, and that's one reason the Beast pack did well aslo. The Bosch is confusing. They use copper strips, which are way better and surely much more expensive, but they look so thin! I may be missing something...

i would love to see the kobalt xtr impacts thrown on the dyno and see what the numbers they make. i use kobalts xtr everyday and ive used others and the kobalts just hit harder i feel. it would be really cool to see. they also have 2 types of batteries that i would love to see tested!
