I recently found out my dad used to play a 1969 Ampeg Dan Armstrong in a band back in the early 70's. He sold it in 1972, for $250. Darn.

Id love to see a video like this but for weird Japanese basses. IE: Teisco, Univox, etc.

That rickenbacker is what mani of the stone roses played, though his had the custom Jackson pollock paint job.

Really wish Rickenbacker would bring back the 4005. It's such a work of visual and audio art.

Not really THAT weird, I could think of a few other that are much more weird but, I like that these vintage basses are being reviewed and explained.

That gretsch had a really cool, naturally growling tone.

I’m pretty sure that at some point between 69-70 Keith Richards was using an Ampeg guitar onstage while Bill Wyman used the bass version. But nobody noticed Bill. 😏

The whole oeuvre of British and European instruments in the early 60s is worth looking at, esp Burns and Vox. My personal weirdo was a Robin HSS 'superstrat' bass, reverse pointy headstock, in pearl white with an airbrushed chameleon on it! That was as built, I bought it on a whim and chopped it in for a Fender a couple of years later. I've never seen one like it, nor that one since. I still kinda miss it, so if anyone knows where it is...

'Like other Rics, the frets are the height and width of a human hair's thickness, made of what could only be lead, impossible to change, and covered by an inch of lacquer. The electronics are also poorly engineered, with huge amounts of noise and near-constant loose connection/shorting problems and the cavities are ten thousandths of an inch larger than the components, making them as impossible to change or repair as the frets. Don't let any of that get you down, though, because before those problems ruin the bass, the neck (which has been twisted and warped by the insane dual truss arrangement and cannot be replaced due to through-body construction) will bow into a circle and collapse in on itself like a dying star'. There, I fixed it. I have go at least give them credit for looking and sounding really cool, though.
@jake42ner4 жыл бұрын
The sinner Jim Whitney not true, the new basses are some of the finest in the world, bigger frets, improved bridge, 2 truss rods and the best looks of any bass. Only the early 60s basses were how you describe. My 77 4001 is the best bass I own and it holds a set up amazing. Frets are great shape and neck is straight. Better than both my vintage fender basses
