Here in italy this is basically the only way you make coffee at home, and there's a very important hospitality culture around it. My mother has four different moka pots of different sizes so she can always make the right amount of coffee for the number of guests we have, cause it's basically mandatory to ask your guests if they want some coffee, especially after a meal or during the afternoon. Also it's kinda adorable how she was like "the coffee is so bitter!" "How do I use this thing??". I've been using moka pots since I was like 10 y/O cause my mother would always send me to make coffee while she chatted with guests. Also yeah, coffee made this way is more rich and strong in taste than American coffee (which is pretty bland) so it's understandable that it may be a little strange for you to drink. It's the reason I don't really drink coffee, too

I don't think there's a single household in Italy that doesn't have at least one moka pot. They make them in all sizes from teeny tiny pots that yield half a cup of coffee to giant 12-person pots. Also yeah being the person in charge of making coffee from the age of 10 is relatable lol

Just a note, when they say coarser than espresso, on most home grinders the smallest setting is coarser than espresso, so you can go with that. Your grind looks big enough for pour over, which is a no no here. Also, burr grinders are preferred over blade because blade grinders don't grind evenly
@mamaharumi

That grind size is too coarse even for pour over. Really, freshly roasted preground is going to be significantly better than freshly ground out of a blade grinder.

In Spain we also use it. I think it's the only way to make good coffee. What surprised me the most is when I travelled to Northern Europe and met several unrelated Italians. 90% of them travel with a small pot. It's like a pocket moka pot. Anyway, the problem was the taste of the water and the coffee was not as good as in the south (or at least that's what they told me). Curious fact, in Spain we call them Italian coffee makers.

@@yunaelia Yes, you are pretty much right, it can taste soapy and even foam if not washed properly with running water. also a thing I heard is that with every coffee you make a little bit of coffee oil stays on the inside of the pot, creating a layer that protects your coffee drink from touching the metal that it cooks inside of. Unfortunately, coffee oil has a colour of, well, coffee, so it looks like it's dirty. I do wash mine once in a while with soap and then run it without coffee, only water, to clean up.

@pseudoplotinus that grinder will not give equal grind size to the coffee beans. She needs a grinder that can adjust the grind size. Grind size affects the coffee taste. If the grind size is too fine, the water might not go up, and the coffee will be bitter and acidic. Coarser grinds can lead to under-extraction due to the faster brewing process. The result is often a weak, watery, and underwhelming cup of coffee that lacks the desired depth of flavor.

We use these to make cuban coffee. Grew up drinking this and watchin my mom do it. Cafe Bustello. Same method. But put sugar1-3 tbspoons to taste in a another cup something that can hold the entire batch of coffee your making. Then once the first tiny bit of syrupy coffee starts coming out. You poor that into the cup with your sugar. Put the pot back on the stove to brew. And you mix. Until the sugar is Caramelized and no longer a solid. Slowly keep adding more coffee as it brews into your, mix until your out of coffee from the pot. Take that in your “serving” cup and poor into small cuban coffee shot cups.

Some advices on moka from an Italian: Never wash your moka with soap, coffee leaves a sort of patina on the aluminum that prevents the metal flavour, so use just water. The coffee grain should be smaller, in Italy it is used a very powdery coffee, the same (circa) used in an espresso machine. Water should be put in at room temperature reaching the middle of the valve. Coffee should be filling entirely its little department but should not be pressed while filling it with the spoon. And to prevent spillage or burning coffee once you hear a sort of whistle/ loud bubbling you should remove it from the stove, the residual warmth will continue to make the coffee go to the upper chamber without ruining it!!! I think that's all! Hope to be helpful!!!

@professorquarter
@professorquarter 2 жыл бұрын
You really do need to heat the pot on a lower temperature so it doesn't boil over like that (listen to those videos) except MAYBE at the very end. A low-very low flame and a bit of patience does wonders. It also leads to fewer grounds in your coffee. Also, be sure to run the bottom part of the pot under cold tap water, removing it from the flame before it finishes, just as the stream is turning white and bubbly. Fewer grounds and unpleasant tastes that way. If it starts to boil over and bubble violently, you are overdue to remove it from the flame and run the cold water down the sides of the bottom. Also, you can grind finer than what it tells you to in the instructions. I grind for Moka pot just a smidge above how I grind for espresso. Again, listen to the videos, you can go even finer than you showed in the video here. Assuming you do it right, this won't lead to an increase in grounds in the final product. If it ever starts always boiling violently no matter what you do, you may need to descale it, which simply means letting the pieces soak in diluted vinegar with warm water then scrubbing.

I’m from PR this is one of two ways that coffee was ever made at home. I never knew anyone that had a coffee machine at home, not even the rich people. Lol. It’s called a percolator. Never heard it called a moka pot. Once coffee starts coming out the top, just immediately take it off the heat, it’ll continue to brew. No need to run it under cold water at all, which is not good for that metal anyway if it’s still hot. If you leave it in the stove past that, you’re just burning it and making the coffee bitter. Also, did you pour hot water in it before putting it on the stove? That’s a no no. And don’t wash it with soap either, just rinse it out.

@@eliseblair5228 Well yes, I was just trying to make aware that it’s much more common than just the UK- It looked like it was the first time she’d seen that type of coffee pot, so I was just saying it’s more common than she probably thinks.

Lol so far I have seen people say it Is a staple in DR 🇩🇴, Tunisia 🇹🇳 , Ethiopia 🇪🇹 , Cuba 🇨🇺, Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 , and honestly pretty good staple in Florida from what my co-workers in that state say I hear Florida has a amazing coffee scene bc of Latin American influences

Hey you should grind the coffee finer than that Also instead of coolimg it with water close the lid try just pouring the coffee out to a cup. Its waaaay better

I don't know about anyone else but I'm English born & raised and I've never seen anyone use this contraption before. 😅 We either go for instant coffee or filter/drip coffee. My dad likes cafetière coffee and I use my trusty pump espresso machine.

Ayyy, I’m also Dominican and I don’t think this has ever left my counter. Mine’s a lot less shiny by now, though. We always used café bustelo in my house and my step dad tried to stick us to these recyclable pods for a coffee machine. It did NOT stick

It is important to have the top open, you have to stop the extraction once you start to see the bubbles, because that's going to make the coffee bitter. If you have a bad coffee it's going to be bitter anyways.
