Something I heard recently when looking up build stuff is that it seems terrain in this game somewhat follows cardinal directions (north, south, east, west) and you can tell what these direction are by raising land with a hoe and it forms a square in these directions, I believe its the sides of the square, not the points, if this is true and I remembered correctly it could help you dig straighter tunnels, hope this helps
