Lightning from the fingertips is in the vast majority of cases when used against enemy combatants to electrify them to death leads to a far higher number of deaths than magically convincing the enemy to walk away. Mind control is insidious, and it's bad when used against innocent targets, and it CAN be used to cause fatalities, and lightning may be used benignly if you're using it to jump start a speeder or something, but... the results speak for themselves. Would you rather be a stormtrooper who's been told "these aren't the droids you're looking for" and sent home, or would you rather be the rebel being fried by Force Lightning?

I mean, if your job is to commit war crimes, then I don't feel that bad about you. There are definitely Stormtroopers that probably never did anything too bad, but a lot of the ones we see are harassing civilians or outright murdering defenseless people. They are the Emperor's direct troops for a reason, at the end of the day. All of them are experienced soldiers who probably did a lot of killing and fighting to reach that position. You don't just become a stormtrooper willy nilly from nowhere. They are elite troops. The average joe are the normal soldiers and officers.

No other Star Wars IP has made us feel as bad for stormtroopers as these games. They really are just soldiers trying to provide for their families. They're not evil; the Empire is the dominant force in the galaxy, and resisting them is suicide. It took a long time for the Rebellion to become an actual force.

Despite not being good at combat, if stormtroopers actually had individual personalities, I bet people would actually root for them too. Clones are mainly rooted for becuase of their personalities, something the stormtroopers, ironically naturally born humans, lacked in the franchise.
