Should the Imam be an open sinner (which this one will become eventually without a doubt) the prayer of the people who will pray behind him will become invalidated. Whether this story is true or not does not matter. It's a great reality check for all muslims who may be in similar type situations (talking and seeing each other in private) to avoid it, because no one, including an imam is free of the Shaytan. The Prophet (PBUH) said "Whenever a man is alone with a women, the devil makes a third" (sahih bukhari). In this particular case, the Prophet (PBUH) says, "Do not visit women whose husbands are away, for the Devil circulates in you like your blood.". So this Imam needs to check his knowledge, because in this circumstance he is lacking.

This is what happens when people do NOT fear Allah. If you take a look at today's society you'll find that many avoidable sins are easily committed due to carelessness and an imbalance of fear and hope. Then these smaller sins eventually lead to bigger sins. Fear of Allah is necessary as it does not only prevent you from sinning but also connects you with your creator so that you become closer to Allah. It also leads to Modesty in it's purest form. Some people are also shy. This is actually not a bad thing because Shyness also leads to Modesty in it's purest form. Many people today have too much Hope but not enough Fear. The lifestyle which many people follow and live in the West is evidently clear of this fact. And so this is an imbalance. To become a perfect believer, one must maintain a balance of Fear and Hope. May Allah help us all to achieve this balance purely for his sake, inshallah. Ameen.

True story : one of my friends is from Kuwait and one time she was visiting me in London and we went to Selfridges to shop, then suddenly I see her lowering her head looking on the floor like she didn't wanted to make eye contact with someone, she looked embarrassed ,then I asked her who was it and she said to turn my back and look at the person. I looked and it was a guy who you could see he was gay, , then she told me it was her local masjid imam. She was shocked and didn't know what to do, to tell or not.
