I spent my high School years in Hawaii and have always loved this song. I now live in South Carolina. Several years ago I was at work-I'm a nurse, and I had an elderly patient who was visiting her family. She was from Hawaii and really didn't have a lot to say. I played this video/song for her and she began to sing. we both had tears streaming down our faces. One of the best moments I have had as a nurse.

I used to take care of grandmas with Alzheimer's, and as part of the disease, one of them was prone to fits of paranoia, hostility, and fear. She was having one of those fits when I turned on the TV, and at the end of the Japanese lantern ceremony they were playing this song. It's like a light came on in her face. She KNEW this song, and she started humming, then singing, then got up and started dancing hula. She went from angry, confused and afraid, to excited and young again. The power of music, especially in elderly patients with dementia, is so beautiful to see. She was able to end that night peacefully, and went to bed contented for the next few hours.

I was born and raised in Maui and this song means alot to me when I listen to it, I’m not Hawaiian but I’ll always remember my Kumu telling me a story about this song. My school singing it together at may day, never forget the times. But in present time my heart breaks due to losing the historic town Lahaina because of a brush fire, not only that we have lost many family members and people. I’m disappointed in the tourists for still swimming in the same waters people drowned in trying to escape from the fire, now I will never forget this song as I hear people singing it in sadness because their homes were burned down and families are missing or dead. I want people to know how much this hurts us. Native Hawaiians are dying and many tourists have no sympathy for them, if you’re planning to fly to maui just for a tour please donate your ticket instead, and fly somewhere else.

So true, all of the comments. The difference in this music is because of the heart. Deep from the heart these words are sung and played. I was raised all my growing up years in Hawaii Nei. Though a little 7 year old from the mainland, Hawaii is the other half of who I am. Now 84, I too have tears listening. My Kailua classmate, Priscilla (Maile) Kinimaka, included this song on her CD she blessed me with years ago. Thank you all, who did so much coordinated work to get this presentation together.

We worked alongside their firefighters, many of whom had lost family, friends, and homes in Lahaina. On the night before we were set to return to Oahu, we all held hands and sang this together-- no instruments, no drums, just our voices filling the fire training center. I've sung this song before, but after that night, it holds much more meaning to me.

Just today I stated to my daughter about how the Hawaiian people had a King that ruled their land and their people and they lived in harmony with the land and the inhabitants and then other people came and took control of their land and their people. This song literally pulls at the heart strings and if the soul is in touch with the love of the people and the land there is no way a person won't have tears rolling down their cheeks. I have never been to Hawaii in this life, but someday I will make it there before I pass so that I can feel the love of their land and its people. The legacy of Hawaii rests with the Kama'aina. I know of no better tribute to its legacy than this mele. In these times, most recently the past two weeks, the life lessons we teach to our children are everything. Be mindful of your children and the lessons you teach, push them to do their best, and never hold back on praising their efforts and correcting them when they need guidance. Mahalo nui for this reminder of that.

I love this Song soooo much ♥️🌺🤟🫶🏻. As I Iayed in coma during three weeks, fighting for my life, my husband used to let me hear this song on my headphones. Every time I heard it my body was calming down. I didn’t know the song before but as I woke up, after this long fight, I was able to sing it. 🎶🎵 It was such an amazing feeling. Thank you so much for this wonderful song. It will always be precious to me. My biggest wish today is to being able to play it on my ukulele. I will give my best. 🎶🎵🌺 I love you Hawaii 🌺🤟

i cry. I'll never forget my Grandmother taking out to the countryside on O'ahu. there was a celebration. at the. conclution. Hawai'i Aloha played And she took my hand. at the end I asked my grandmother why she took my hand as we sang. she turned to me, and said. its the Hawaiian way. those words have thundered threw out the shoals of time for me. made me a good Hawaiian man and made me fiercely proud of my heritage.

That was beautiful! Don't ever step back from, abandon, forget, modify, or let go of this magnificent and sacred Hawiian tradition of (sing together)in harmony. For atheists, agnostics, religious people, or anybody in between the sacredness, and healing magic of this music is undeniable, gut wrenching, and profound. It is the common language of humanity, the highest aspiration of human achievement, and peace with the universe.

In ALL of this world's Complex Insanity, THIS is Why Hawaiian music touches So many Different peoples in So many Different ways....Lilting Harmonies, Laid-back Soothing Rhythms & Poignant Heart-felt Lyrics. When that composition is delivered in the same manner that it started out as...No Studio Overdubs or Unnecessary, Distractive Vocal Gymnastics.... THIS Music Knows No Boundaries & Delivers on ALL Levels....Mental, Physical, Emotional & Spiritual... No matter what Social/Financial Strata you visualize/categorize yourself. It ALL Connects & Fits into One Complete Jigsaw Puzzle....

We the original people of the land all of us natives have a deep connection to our homeland. The land was a gift to our people we were in trusted to care for all our relatives. From the two leged too the four leged creatures. Today we are standing up for your ancestors both human and non human. Because its time we heal our land. We have never left our land we have just forgotten it is our land. We are learning again who we are and who we must be. This song reminds of that one day the Kingdom of Hawaii will be free once again .
