There is a 50% native blood requirement to qualify so many people that have been born and lived their whole lives there do not qualify. Hawaiians have been displaced for decades due to greed.. Outsiders with more financial resources buying up property and then renting them out for incredible profit. The results have been devastating.. loss of landscape and native vegetation, decline in native wildlife, pollution impacting the wellness, Hawaiians having to move out of state or living many together in order to hold on to their property. Enough is enough. I am not a Hawaiian but I lived there for a year and the priority has to be that native Hawaiians are given the assistance needed to own the land. No more out of country buyers pricing them out for gentrification. The other factor here is that it's Hawaiians who safeguard the land, the turtles, the ocean by volunteering and starting grassroots operations. Outsiders not so much. Tourists used to sit on the turtles for photo ops. Tourists still hound the turtles, not allowing them to rest, chasing them out to sea, disrupting their ability to reproduce and live just for a Fricking photo/forced interaction. It isn't the government who stepped in first to save them, it is native Islanders volunteering without pay. It's Islanders who are cleaning up after disrespectful visitors. Without Hawaiians owning the land, paradise will be lost. Please hear me!

@@dancooper6002 there are transplants who are respectful and maintain the Aloha spirit and lands along with others and there are those who don't. I guess the truth will be apparent during this crisis - who tries to make a profit off of suffering and who actually helps the people displaced by opening up their homes and mansions. Hawaiians shouldn't need to do anything to own the right, just like Native Americans shouldn't have had to. The displacement was because others decided they could go buy up the land and own it, forcing a totally new way of life on people who weren't prepared for these rules and didn't have the resources to compete. If that happened to the majority, there would be an angry revolt but it happened to a minority who have gentle and generous values about sharing. The island of Oahu has lost so much of its beauty in the last twenty years due to the greedy developers. I have a problem with this. IMO visitors should go only if they are willing to learn about the Aloha spirit and be respectful. That's my opinion experiencing first hand what impact outsiders have had to the land, ocean, wildlife and people.

The possibility of being priced out of the new construction rental market in Lahaina is a reasonable fear for someone who was living in a rented wooden house in Lahaina and whose home was destroyed. I expect those landowners/landlords who choose to rebuild, will probably rebuild differently and use mostly concrete and steel for fire-resistance. A new house anywhere in Hawaii tends to be a lot more expensive to build compared to mainland construction costs, which means higher rents for landlords want to do more than break even. And it generally takes a long time in Hawaii -- multiple years even -- to get all the planning approval, building permits and the skilled trades to build a just single house. The builders of large developments have more pull with local and state governments and have a better chance of getting all the required approvals for new construction in a shorter time. I expect to see concrete and steel multistory condo buildings getting easier/faster approval compared to approval/permits for rebuilding of closely crowded single family wooden homes in Lahaina. I expect those who did not lose their wooden houses in this wildfire may lose their current homeowner's coverage and have difficulty getting insurance coverage with a different company. And those who can get homeowner's insurance may pay a lot more for it and with a larger deductible if they want fire coverage. Similar to what many Californians have already experienced after all the wildfires there.

I’m a native, I’ve lived in Lahaina. I have immense sympathy for the residents however, they are not the only ones stretched and looking for answers. First responders, many of whom haven’t slept, have been on the ground in that devastation for days on end looking for remains. A job I guarantee no local wants to do. They too haven’t been home. Volunteers are working as fast as possible to get these people help yet all they do is complain that no one is helping fast enough. Give the state a break! Funds get tied up by the government, they have flown in help, yet it’s not enough. People in Kula lost homes too but, you hear nothing about them. They need help too. Maui was never prepared for any emergency and that’s on them. Locals hear sirens go off and then rush to the store. They’ve always procrastinated. I’ve seen I first hand with the last two hurricanes we had. This is a wake up call that maybe they need to take some responsibility and prepare for all emergencies that may arise. Brush fires are big in summer, be aware. Keep your yards groomed and watered, maintain your homes, don’t let them get ruined down. Help yourself not be a victim. I pray for those who lost their lives, but, I feel sorry for the first responders who are stretched beyond their limits right now and not even an ounce of gratitude has been shown to them. You report on aloha and community but all the interviews have people basically saying “ what about me/us?” How about we let the firemen find the missing family members of your neighbors first.

I totally agree. I'm in Minnesota, and we see news saying people want answers and numbers. we see it's going to take a long time. we have tornadoes that destroy things like that fire, but so many people are not killed. They need to let the searchers find as many as they can. survivors should get their DNA (blood) on file so remains can be tested.

There is fear in Lahaina that fire victims may lose their properties to big real estate investors (e.g. Blackrock, Vanguard, and even Oprah) that normally take advantage of any calamity for profitable deals. Authorities should investigate reports that prior to the conflagration, people have offered to buy properties from native owners which apparently the latter had refused. They should also investigate reports that an organization had approached government officials in Hawaii offering to build a "smart city" in Maui.

Oprah owns thousands of acres on Maui (why does one person need this??), She sets up a non-profit foundation and donates her land, Bezos's money goes into the foundation, and builds very very affordable houses for any displaced native hawaiians. Lahaina is redeveloped by native hawaiians, period, nobody else gets a say and they can make it much more fire resistance in the city and all around it, I heard long ago the native hawaiians had a system to take care of their environment, so let this be a showcase for that now. You can see all the many flat fields (farms?) surrounding Lahaina, that does not look too original, was the land flattened and then farmed? Let the Hawaiians govern themselves, why do white politicians have any say. No more second homes or air bnb's in Maui. This is an opportunity to fix the environmental wrongs from the past.

And I grew up on the Southern Oregon coast, check that demographic. And have been living on off vastly on in Georgia in the Cobb/Bartow/Cherokee triangle for years, and all my kids have been born in Georgia. Orchid Isle still is keeping things balanced. If I were a preteen I could go to Kam, with over ⅛ to spare, based on stipulations of the late 70s and 80s. So when FOX media propaganda network tries to roast Biden for being reserved re comment, I have no qualms with his relative quiet. He's declared Lahaina a disaster FEMA emergency.
