BERKELEY, Calif. -- Matthew Harding blocked a punt to set up a touchdown,
then scored himself on another block as Hawaii, its special teams making up
for a struggling offense, stunned California 21-7 on Saturday.
Ryan Longwell, Cal's punter and placekicker, missed two field goals in
addition to having two punts blocked.
Two holding penalties, one that negated a 55-yard punt, left Cal facing
fourth-and-47 at its 26 early in the second quarter.
Harding swept in unblocked from the right to smother Longwell's punt and
Khary Williams picked up the ball and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown
that tied it 7-7.
Longwell had a second punt blocked early in the third quarter when Robby
Blakeney burst through the middle. Harding scooped up the bouncing ball at
the Cal 16 and scored untouched to put the Rainbows up 14-7.
Hawaii (2-1), a 16-point underdog, got its only offensive touchdown on Rodney
Glover's 1-yard keeper with 5:10 remaining. Glover's 54-yard scramble
preceded the score.
Special teams breakdowns were only part of the problem for California (0-2),
upset last week by San Diego State. Cal was penalized seven times for 84
yards and its offense failed to get untracked against Hawaii's attacking
defense. Dave Barr was sacked eight times and threw an interception while
completing 25-of-42 for 277 yards.
In the third quarter, Longwell also missed field goal tries of 25 and 37
yards, shanking the first wide left and pulling the second wide right.
Hawaii also botched a first-half punt, setting the stage for California's
only score.
Martin Gaskins helped set up the Bears' score when he crashed through the
line and partially blocked Stephen Wilson's punt. The kick traveled 25 yards
and Cal took over at the Hawaii 42.
Barr directed an 11-play drive, keeping the march alive with a sneak on
fourth-and-1 to push the ball to the Hawaii 3. Three plays later, Reynard
Rutherford took a pitchout and swept left end for the score a yard out with
2:23 left in the first quarter.
