This is compellingly well framed. To have it be curated by someone credible whose industry is rooted in one of the most sought after housing markets in the country (fair argument globally could be made) brings weight to the discussion. Especially because most people in real estate in Hawaii would treat this as something that they shouldn’t address, due to the implications it might have toward their bottom line. This takes guts. This is truly a brave and inspired lens. I would definitely support a long format of this. Great piece of work!

Same exact thing is happening here in Michigan on Lake Huron I’m sure the other lakes are being affected but I don’t live by them it’s getting bad here houses are coming down and they just keep doing it

It's interesting to hear that, I thought the large swells and waves were the major proponent of sand degradation but the lakes have far smaller waves (I lived on Lake Michigan) so there isn't much rest for and waterfront owner out there... Also, I wonder if the freezing cycle plays a role there vs our waves.

Well to be fair it’s basically only rich people most of which don’t live there 8 months outta the year who own property on the shorelines now a days unless it’s homestead… maybe if people didn’t build houses on our beaches this wouldn’t be an issue… just a thought… or stealing sand from the north shore beaches to add it other places fucking with water levels as well

Here's the thing. There is no right answer. Some people are losing homes, regardless of who they are or whey they come from it's not a good thing. Simultaneously, we are losing public beaches. The public has the right to the beach and the home owners have the right to protect their home. It really is a Lose Lose and blaming mother nature doesn't get much done. Perhaps someday a new technology is created that can solve this. Also, hindsight is 20/20, perhaps when these homes were purchased the water levels we much lower that the beach receding seems ridiculous, or the change of currents (which is a whole other topic) created a channel that funnels the sand away in a specific area. I don't know much about taking sand from north shore but I do agree that making ecological changes will often have impacts far beyond what's expected.

They could.design a new type of wall one that isn't straight has cirves to.brwak.up.the wave. You can also angle the wall make it a sea slope with flat spots and ridges partway up making it so the water hits then slows going back. Muttiple methods could be used just like dam spill ways you don't want under cit irrosion

Muh I want my house right next to the sea in the front row... The same logic devastates my country's (Croatia) coast. If you build your house that close to the sea, expect the sea to come knocking. 😂

The government can step in, offer to buy the endangered properties at a reasonable price. Demolish the acquired properties. Change their zoning to non residential. Beaches are saved. Financed by tourism and done.

Create reefs? Idk
@DevinTryanHi

Something that seems promising is installing shore break walls further out, maybe 50 yards offshore. It dampens the impact of the waves and if it's created with natural rocks could cause reef destruction than a concrete wall. One of the many challenges is that installing a shore break in one area could have unexpected consequences somewhere else. Especially with the ocean it's all connected. The shore break could cause sand to build up around one location, which could block or diverge a cold water current which could impact marine life or cause sand build up in channels that were previously used for vessels. This is just a thought and has no backing but I like the idea of creating artificial reefs like you mentioned.

Those homeowners need to move their homes right up to the front of their properties at their expense , might be xheaper to just build new and let the ocean take the old yeah but the state would probably fine them for littering . But theyll get another 100 years and a shorter walk to their mailbox and when taking out their trash .just think of all the backyard BBQ.'s wa5ching the surf ...Gotta think positive . The positive their saving the most iconic surf location on earth 🌎 Aloha DSC777. King tides today 7/28/24
