Here is where the Filipino vampire-like creature, the aswang, roams in search of her next victim. And here is where the Portuguese witch, the feiteceira, spins her spells and curses at her whim. Rich in culture and traditions, these islands are overflowing with stories of ghosts and hauntings, creatures and curses. Lopaka is the keeper of these stories.

Born and raised Kapaa Kauai. now reside on Oahu. In 2019 my wife and I vacationed back home on Kauai. We briefly went to Polihale. You can FEEL the mana there. When I was in HS, we’d get stories about Tunnel of Treea going into Koloa. People would say on full moons, if you turn your lights off while driving, you could faintly see white and black dogs running along the trees. My cousins have stories of night marchers going from mauka to makai, down the waterline of Wailua river…. Very cool stories!

What I always heard was that you should not drive through the Tree Tunnel at midnight with pork in the car. If you did, your car would stall.

My mother Jean Ishikawa was born and raised in Mana. Her father, Kana worked as a foreman there on the plantation - he later moved the family to Oahu. Seventeen years ago, my family and I tried to locate Mana. It is now a military base. We did, however, feel a spiritual presence emanating from the area. It truly is a special place.

If I should find myself in Hawaii, I hope to heed the folk lores and true super natural things that I do believe in and I'm sensitive to. In the 1960s, The Garden Isle newspaper published several accounts of people in the Hanalei/Haena area who believed they had seen Pele. The newspaper published these reports without comment.
