In the late 1800s to the early 1900s, there was a great influx of foreigners to Hawaii who came to work the sugar and pineapple plantations. The settlers brought their families, their foods... and their ghosts to Hawaii. Today, one of our most popular ghost stories is, in fact, a Japanese ghost story. On this episode of Hawaii’s Most Haunted, we talk about Noppera-bo, also known as, the faceless woman.

In this series, Lopaka brings you some of Hawaii's Most Haunted places.
Master storyteller, Lopaka Kapanui, brings to life the feared Night Marchers, the goddess Pele, Menehune, e‘epa, mo‘o and more. But… Hawaiian deities and spirits aren’t the only things residing in this island paradise. Here is also where the Japanese dog demons, the inugami, are sent to ruin the lives of unsuspecting families. Here is where the Filipino vampire-like creature, the aswang, roams in search of her next victim. And here is where the Portuguese witch, the feiteceira, spins her spells and curses at her whim. Rich in culture and traditions, these islands are overflowing with stories of ghosts and hauntings, creatures and curses. Lopaka is the keeper of these stories.
Beyond the cool, blue waters and balmy trade winds of our idealistic paradise is the thin veil that separates our world from the place where shadows talk back. Spirits, Ghosts, Legends, Facts... Experience the Hawaii most don't see every day.

When I was younger, perhaps 6 years old. I went to the candy shop in Kahala mall. like any 6 y.o. I begged my parents to get me candy. in specific, the Chinese good luck candy (those were my favorite to eat) as I was eating it, I lost my tooth due to chewing on the candy first. I cried and was scared so my mother took me to the nearby bathroom (the downstairs bathroom) as we were going down the stair, I remember seeing this lady in white at the mirrors going down that hallway. but it vanished as we got closer. the we went to the end of the hallway to the bathroom, I SAW THE LADY AGAIN! this time, she was over the sink. I told my mom that I see a girl in white, didn't believe me at first... until the sink turned on by itself... my mother and I quickly got out of the bathroom... ever since then, whenever I go to that mall, I avoid the downstairs bathroom

I was at the Waialae Drive Inn when the faceless ghost was seen in the woman's restroom in the late seventies or the early eighties.. I always park next the snack bar.The young girl was screaming and terrified and was comforted by the young women around her. In a split second , everyman and boy including me, filled the restroom to packed capacity and saw nothing. The girls drove her home eventually. Everyone else stayed to talk about it .We never finished the second movie.

I've seen her, but not at Kahala Mall. I saw her driving home one night to town from Kaneohe, on the town side after exiting the Wilson Tunnel. I've seen alot and have commented on my experiences on your videos and IG in the past and love your stories. But out of everything I've seen, this remains my most terrifying experience to date. I live in Hilo now, but whenever I'm back home on Oahu I still will not drive over Wilson Tunnel at night. By the way, this happened in the early 1990's, and I'm still traumatized by it.

Same, but not the Wilson tunnels and I was coming from town when I saw her. I was tearing it down the Pali when I saw her in the second tunnel walking mauka. I slowed to pick her up because tutu no belong on the side of that road. I could’ve died that day, she saved me.

I am not an individual who gives power to these ghosts but I’ve had two encounters with ghosts that I still remember to this day. One encounter was during a sleep paralysis where a see-through purple and white figure was looking at me behind my tv and the same night my sister went to the bathroom and said she saw a figure behind the tv as well. She was terrified. My second ghost experience was with a faceless woman. Me and two of my friends were walking in the forest and we found an abandoned swing on a hill. It started to get dark out and while we were swinging a woman appeared. We couldn’t see her face and when we called out and asked” What do you want” she didn’t say anything for 10 seconds and then she laughed and went down the hill skipping as if she was a child. We were terrified. We learned to never roam the forests at night ever again.

When my sister was just a child she used to get haunted by the lady in white . She would wake up screaming in the middle of the night scared out of her mind. In a panic, my mom or dad would run to her room to check on her and see what was going on. My sister would point to the entrance of her room and say that there was a lady in white standing in the doorway and she doesn’t have a face. This went on for years until one day it just stopped. However, this wasn’t the last time the lady in white would be seen in our house. My sisters hula halau would come to our house and make their outfits for the merry monarch. Well during the consecutive days it would take the halau to complete their outfits, we had learned that on two separate occasions there was two girls from my sisters hula halau that had seen the lady in white appear in the room that the halau was working in.

My daughter and I have been there a few times and twice we sat outside of SoHa. Both times my daughter and I were sitting at that specific table, both times she faced the bathroom and acknowledged something that wasn’t there. At 18 months she waved to something that wasn’t visible and no one was walking by or behind me. The second time was the beginning of October of this year. We came back from thinker toys and fun factory and sat at the same exact table, outside of SoHa. She faced the same area, pointed and said “that’s the happy monster”.

When my Niece was 2 she would point at the worship room in the center of this old japanese house we used to live in and say " the man". We would watch her eyes follow him as he left the room. We weren't really bothered by him so we didn't throw salt. We did throw salt at this annoying spirit who used to tap on the walls all over our room at our Hanamaulu house. The faka got pissed and put his hand through the wall to grab my brothers face while he was sleeping. I had get angry and went to the kitchen, got more salt and went outside in my BBds. I then proceeded to curse "fak U" and throw salt around the perimeter of the house. Problem solved. A couple years later I had fight with another spirit, could've been the same spirit, in my dreams and won. when the movie Predator came out years later i had chicken skin because the cloaked predator looks just like the spirit I fought. I never told anyone this because they might think I cabbage.

Question: do you have any videos or knowledge of what i and one kapuna I used to work with call "the messengers" or messengers in the clouds. I have seen them many times, once on Oahu, and at Kealakekua Bay right next to the heiau. There are ali'i burial grounds up on the cliffs in Kealakekua Bay, but not sure if there's any correalation. The messengers i saw in the clouds was right in downtown waikiki beach and a friend i was with saw it too. One looked straight up like Queen Liliokalani, or atleast some Hawaiian Royalty fitted with outfits that they would have worn after colonists had arrived, so im unsure if it was a depiction of someone else. Anyways i have looked a long time for anyone who has heard of what i call "the messengers" figures in the clouds. Its very detailed when it happened, and you can feel the mana... its not like when you stare at the clouds and your imagination makes out silly things like a dog or something... it was far more powerful and detailed. When the kapuna I knew mentioned it I was shook, but she kept what she said short and simple like "sometimes they bring messages" and i knew better not to question Auntie, just listen to her when she had something to say. Wish I had more info on this phenomenon. I plan to go through all your videos when i have more time, but if you know anything about what i am saying id love to hear it.

Omg I remember the drive in theater. I used to go to that drive in theater a lot as a child, I also remember the ghost story, although not in detail. As a child I remember needing to go she she so another child friend and I left our family's cars parked to go to the restroom there. Before entering there was a woman who said to us "that bathroom is haunted by a ghost". My friend and I must of brushed it off enough to go in and go out but we were a bit weirded out. I literally forgot all about that time until watching your video. I can't for the life of me remember what the woman looked like. Not faceless because I would probably remember that, but I cannot even remember a single detail of what she looked like other than black hair pulled up. Now I'm like... what ... the .. .. I grew up on Oahu as a child, "military brat" and later returned to the Islands but settled on Big Island. I now have a hapa Hawaiian son of my own and can't wait to teach him many of the legends and lore as well.

That's funny, it was 2:45 pm the eve before Halloween and I'm driving makai towards Macy's mens cologne and to my shock driving west of Macy's is you and it seemed it was in slo mo. I told my wife I have to turn around and meet Lopaka Kapanui. She just said STOP IT KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD. I told her he's da #1 ghost teller and she goes ooh okay. I think we almost crossed path near that haunted door in that area you mentioned in one of your story telling. I was curious if you were doing a filming dat day or just galavanting.

I was in Hawaii on the Big Island in 2016 and took a photo of the waterfall. I have a picture of the faceless woman in the waterfall. She had braids, looked Polynesian and was wearing a dress from what appeared to be the 1800’s.
