me and my wife are taking a trip during the first week in may and i would love to see some lava at least from a decent distance am i allowed to be walking up there or could i technically “get in trouble” ?

no i dont think so, when we were there, you were allowed to do anything you wanted really, all at your own risk. it's not the type of place where theres any employees or rangers or anything who would yell at you, there isn't anyone there.

Planning a trip to HI this summer and curious if these flows are still present - sources I can find say that the 30 year long eruption ended in 2018 so surface flows are no longer visible. Is this true?

Super helpful, thanks! Been trying to figure out if it’s possible to get up close to some flowing lava without a tour. Really appreciated this video

For sure, good luck Puya! :)

I believe all of the lava is gone right now. Hoping to see some in August, but from my research there is none viewable currently.

I’m planning on going there in June 2021. Do you think if I’d be able to see this?

Wondering the same

I'm not entirely sure, from what i know, the volcanic activity in the area varies from time to time. if you drive down there and can see smoke atop the mountain, you can bet there will be lava in similar places as we saw.

@@1lifeonearth thank you! I'm also wondering if it's possibly to walk from Holei Sea Arch to the area.

Awesome video and great tips, my wife and I are on the island for 6 months and really would like to find this at night and get some cool pictures like yours! Looking forward to following your channel!

Hey thank you !! yeah as the volcano changes, the exact logistics might fluctuate, but overall the same general coordinates and cardinal directions of where to see the lava should remain the same !

Just tried doing this hike. We got to where you told us to start, but when I placed a pin on the “smoking mountain” part it said it was roughly 7 miles away. Do you have specific pins on where to start and where to go? Also a ton on of the road has been redone now (but mainly follows along the coast and has a gate a bit ways down to block driving down the road further).

hey i think the mountain erupted and kinda change all the landscape there, so everything might be entirely different now :( but the same general directions and idea still holds true
