I think Hawaiian joining Alaska makes sense. For the last 40 years, the aviation sector has been dominated by 4 airlines in the US: Delta, United, American, and Southwest. The most reliable methods of survival are teaming up with one of the big 4, Merging smaller airlines to combat a larger enemy, and having unique routes. Hawaiian has tried having unique routes, but this was ultimately not viable due to the nature of the Hawaiian economy. Hawaiian has teamed up with Delta for a long time, but Delta has never invested in the relationship and now Southwest is encroaching on Hawaiian's historic territory. Merging is the only option left.

The United regional jet you pictured, the Bombardier CRJ700, isn’t a 50 passenger jet. It’s actually a 70 passenger, in 3 classes (6 first class, 16 economy plus, and 48 regular economy). I don’t know what the future holds for this plane. They are, like every other airline in the country, increasing the number of Embraer 175s in the regional fleet.

Well, if the Alaska and Hawaiian merger goes through, expect that Hawaiian is going to go through the same changes that Alaska is going through today to make themselves more like AA. I’m kinda hoping it does not go through because of that
@jwil4286
@jwil4286 Ай бұрын
More like AA in what way? I’ve flown AA and AS this year. I prefer AS for a few different reasons, including (but not limited to) the food, the onboard aesthetic (rather subjective I know), the loyalty program (distance-based instead of revenue-based [yes I know you can earn AS miles on AA flights and vice versa]), and the greater domestic lounge access (much less arbitrary than AA, with better standard lounges and access [using Admirals Clubs for the comparison, as Flagship lounges are relatively much rarer]).

@joeppg how on EARTH would they get that approved? the feds still have buyer's remorse over creating the Big Three/Big Four. this is why they came down on JetBlue so hard recently, both in its deal with AA as well as its attempt to buy Spirit. the only reason the Alaska/Hawaiian merger has a (pretty decent) shot at going through is that 1) they're not the Big Four, 2) they're not known for forcing other airlines to lower prices (like Spirit was), and 3) they have a total of 12 overlapping routes (with only two of them being duopolies), making any legal challenge rather difficult (especially when those two routes can see some competition with some divestitures).

If AS and HA merge you know B6 will hit the roof. They may also try the same move, keeping B6 and NK as separate companies. The US Govt. may also wait until after Nov. to decide this request.

The thing is, AS, HA have a much better chance seeing as they really do not compete with each other and are in a different situation because of their networks.

In the case of B6 and NK, that would have been eliminating an untra low carrier. AS/HA are much more complementary to each other.

I would believe it if both AS and HI had many overlapping routes. They don’t! They each fly unique routes with very few of those that do overlap. The fact that their routes don’t overlap gives them a huge advantage at competing with the big 3.

The huge cost and complexities of merger will bring advantages that could be obtained with code sharing. The international authorities can't be moved until Hawaian is actually integrated. Consider Continental buying United. For a few years, despite shared livery, the 2 airlines retained separate certificates, and a CO crew had to fly on CO aircraft. There are issues with training, procedures, maintenances, ETOPS ratings etc that atre different between airlines and not so simple to unify. So if Alaska has authority to fly Honolulu-Tokyo instead of Hawaian, then it is Alaska that will need to operate the flight using Alaska metal. (Though they may be able to wet lease/subcontract with Hawaian to opetate it on behalf of Alaska but it would be branded Alaska airlines). (Until the 2 operating certificates are merged fully). This is one reason IAG chose to keep its acquisitions separate. The only winners in Alaska/Hawaian will be the bankers who take a good % of transation in fees. Ad they are likely the ones driving this.

Even if the brand says Hawaiian or Alaska on the side of the plane, the CEO has already stated in numerous interviews that the flight attendant and pilots unions are going to merge meaning it’s going to be one airline pretending to be two for regulatory approval. I hate that you ignore this major factor. This merger is still terrible for consumers, And they will be one unified airline, but pretending to be two different brands.
@erauprcwa
@erauprcwa Ай бұрын
It's not terrible for consumers because it is an expansion of both airline's route network. Hawaiian fails because they don't have a domestic route network. Alaska wants to grow into the international market, but cannot organically. So combine the two airlines and you have a massive airline with expansion into places other airlines do not
