Pidgin was actually birth out of necessity. Plantations in Hawaii made business owners millions $$$ in the late 1900’s using labor workers not just from the native population, but from other surrounding countries, mainly from China, Japan, Korea, Okinawa and the Philippines. These groups segregated themselves at first (as planned) but once they all got wind of the huge low-wage-gap-to-profit ratio, they put their cultural, ethnic and language differences aside and came together to unionize and fight for higher wages and better working conditions. Since communication was key, pidgin was born. No one knows exactly how they pulled it off, but you can see and hear the results of their efforts in this video. If you listen closely, you’ll notice that the dialect pulls from each. Sentence structure is more like Asian languages, (“where are you?” ....in. Pidgin is “Where you stay?” - location?) lots and lots of borrowed words (Botcha or “bath” in Japanese). Sounds like “th” that don’t easily flow off the tongue of Asian languages are replaced with the “duh” or “dah” sound. The language brought these groups together. They quickly unionized and were successful in reversing their working conditions and pay. These people grew and help shaped their own unique culture, teaching their children to have that strong Asian work ethic and emphasis on education. Till this day, these first way migraine groups are very close knit. Racism between these group are just about non-existent, they share the same foods, inter-married as many people in Hawaii are multi-ethnic, (Hawaiian-Chinese-Filipino). And they all speak pidgin English.

Actually, "Haole" is pronounced "How-Leh" not "How-Ly" I was born and raised on the Big Island of Hawaii which is the biggest island of the Hawaiian Island chain. So, there are 8 Islands of the Hawaiian Island chain. One more thing, "Hawaii" is pronounced "Ha-va-eeh" not "Ha-wa-eeh" :D

Pidgin originated from the Hawaiians way to communicate with all the immigrants that migrated to work the sugar cane fields and other crops in Hawaii. Hawaiians were one of the most literate peoples in the world in the 1800's prior to US annexation. 88% of Hawaiians knew how to read and properly write in an average of 3 languages, they had sewer systems and electricity before the White House even had it in the US. They hate the haole's here. I guess I can understand why. Our ancestors brought war and disease to their perfectly peaceful country. Tourists come and touch their animals, and tread on the delicate coral reefs, though they beg us not to. I see why they do not like us in Hawaii. But they also need to understand that not all of us are like that. Some white people respect the land and the people who reside in it.
