Actually, there are lanyards for the kayak paddles, when the lanyard is attached it will slow the boat down when if you fall off. He was lucky he didn't let go of the boat.

@kawikadee9670 right. I grew paddling oc1 and 6 man we always carry an extra paddle and I just noticed he was on a surfski so the leash would hinder movement but still you should always have an extra paddle they break occasionally, open ocean no paddle he's lucky they found him

Just by the way the kids took their kayaks out into the open ocean that day without following any safety measures tells us how lax KS is about ocean safety.
