I knew that there were Hurricanes kept for liaison duties in the UK after WWII - without the war-paint, but rather in aluminum and silver doped fabric. I had always admired the photographs and illustrations of these machines. One very much like this, or perhaps the very same livery, was the personal machine of one very senior RAF personage. I am very gratified that a surviving machine has been rendered this way, and I never expected one to appear. Excellent aeroplane - perhaps my favourite warbird - is shown off to its best advantage. One can just admire it without being reminded of the grimness of war. Excellent filming.

Possibly the most beautiful airplane. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING is as beautiful in sight and sound or deadliness as a Hurc. My grandpa was an RCAF test pilot who flew over 45 different types. This lady was, according to his logs and memoires, his go-to girlfriend. When I was 16, I built a 1/24 scale flying replica in the markings of his last Hurc, and mailed it to him. He responded about how much he loved them. I recieved the letter 2 days after hearing he past. I like to think that as he went (like Bing Crosby - a massive goodnight Charlie stroke on the 7th Hole) was happy with my effort. True to form he critiqued my model and offered suggestions. What a man.

Nothing - and I mean nothing - beats the sound of a Merlin in the real. I have had the honour of CF-VRA fly over my house several times, and always ran and grabbed my boys to watch. Only thing better than 1 Merlin, is 4.

A fantastic video, beautifully produced. Such an elegant aircraft in flight. I've always loved the Hurricane; it saved Britain in 1940, of that I'm absolutely convinced.

Spitfire was the superstar of the Royal Air Force's Fighter Command, however in sheer numbers, the Hurricane was the heavyweight. More of them were in service, and shot down more Luftwaffe planes than any other fighter. Great video, and thanks for the Merlin "music".

She is a beauty! I wonder if Harry Hawker had not passed away would the Company have gone in a different direction and would they have still had Sir Sydney in that design role. It’s amazing how history is unfolded. Thankfully for Britain’s sake this aircraft saved it.

Just fabulous!!! Beautiful aircraft, great flying, well video'd. Lovely day too.. interesting to see the use of the later (post war commercial) Merlin 1600hp 500 in this relatively early model. That must give it some impressive acceleration especially with no armament and a low fuel load.

An 'early version' Merlin would be a Merlin II/III fitted to the Hurricane Mk I, which are single speed engines with the AVT32 carb. We have some in our group. The Merlin XX was operational in mid 1940, and is a two speed engine that uses the second type of SU carb (AVT40) used in the Hurricane Mk II.

@soaringtractor Hi ST. We agree it is not an early Merlin then! M500 were post-war civilianised/commercial versions of the T24-1 and T24-2. We have 500-20 and 500-29 versions in our group. I own a 500-29 for displays. The 500 are the last developments of the single stage, two-speed Merlins and incorporate the final modifications. It is a good choice to replace the Merlin XX.

Anyone remember the Mark 1 Hawker Hurricane that was on the Gilbert’s Dairy Farm at Warnford in Hampshire in the 1960s,70sand 80s.... L2444 Belonged to Brian Gilbert’s Grandfather Pilot Officer Harold Gilbert who flew it in the Battle of Britain....It had wooden wings covered in fabric and a wooden two blade propellor. SOMEBODY SOMEWHERE MUST REMEMBER THIS SURELY ? Brian Gilbert was always complaining that it seemed to attract hundreds of kids !

soaringtractor The Hurricane was, along with the finest bomber of WWII, the Avro Lancaster, built under licence to Hawker Aircraft Company in Canada. The Packard Merlin was indeed built in America again under licence to Rolls Royce. These engines usually had to be rebuilt by RAF personnel as the US manufacturers worked to lower standards than Rolls Royce.

soaringtractor Before I deign to continue with our discourse on the varying lies/histories of WWII as written by our various countries, I must ask you to learn to spell. A. FUKIN is spelled FUCKING B. Oh there are far too many to mention C. The criticism of the Packard Merlins came from the RAF ground crews who had to make the fuckers work! E. What happened to D.? D. Oh there it is....I finish this comment with this. The U.K. Industry was overwhelmed by 1941 through Luftwaffe bombing. The manufacture of aircraft and other war materiel and training for pilots, was ordered in the UKs Commonwealth Countries such as Canada. The US government did a deal with Churchill to supply under the Lease/Lend agreement, 50 obsolete destroyers, .303 Ammunition by the million, tanks and other equipment. The U.K. Finally paid off the debt for the Lease/Lend agreement in 2008! Meanwhile, back in 1941.... December the 7th 1941, to quote FDR, "a day that will live in Infamy" the USA were caught fast asleep at Pearl Harbour. Two years into a World War. FAST ASLEEP! If it wasn't for the RED ARMY, you and I would be conducting this crap in Deutsch. I rest my case.

The hurricane, the plabe thar bire the brunt if the early war effort. In a way the fw190 in rekation then spitfire. Somewhat slower, somewhat clumsier, but sturdier and more field worthy in relation to the more temperamentela throughbred.
