Hawker Hurricane. 14533 were built to fight in WW2 and to win the Battle of Britain with the Help of Spitfires and Mustangs aswell as P47s against Messerschmitt 109 s and FW190 s

Never have seen one painted silver. More I see them, more I like them. Spitfire was a thoroughbred, the Hurricane a workhorse of RAF .

In the hands of an experienced pilot she was a match for the 109. But experience was at a premium in the early part of the war

Hard to imagine but Hawkers pulled the wings of a bi plane made a new wing containing retractable wheels and guns and there is your basic design. The Merlin engine made the power competitive and the Hamilton prop variable pitch meant that power was properly used.

Hurricane and Spitfires worked as a team, the Hurricane took on the bombers and the Spitfire dealt with the 109's.

That's an oft-repeated myth. The target was always the bombers. Fighters just got in the way. 11 Group attacked as single squadrons, which were either Spitfires or Hurricanes. There was no opportunity to say, "You attack the fighters, we'll take the bombers". It did not and could not happen. 12 Group sometimes had mixed formations in their "big wings", but again, the objective was always to hit the bombers, which were dropping bombs on airfields, ports and civilians.

I suggest you go and tell that to the Royal Airforce Museum in London. "Spitfires and Hurricanes worked together to shoot down the enemies. The Germans would send over Bombers with fighter planes to protect them. The Spitfires were best for engaging the Luftwaffe’s fighter planes, like the Messerschmitt, whilst the Hurricanes went for the fleets of Bombers like the Junkers and Heinkels."

Ten years ago I had a Guillows Balsa hurricane kit, with an brushless motor, it was flying real great, but we were challenging each other, so one afternoon It just Lost the grip in the air And dive right down to mother Earth 🤕 that model Is history now 😬

Lovely looking plane in the silver, harking back to days of previous Hawker fighters. ‘Only thing I never liked about the Hurricane though was that frankly, bloody awful canopy. They should have fitted the Malcolm Hood as the Americans did to a number of their planes. Anyway, nice footage and thanks for posting!

Yeah i know what you mean, i suppose by the time the brits came up with the malcolm hood it was after the battle of britain & they were busy supplying them to the newer more modern fighters.

Beautifully aircraft. It's a pity Hurricanes were not 15% reduced in scale, because then you'd have the equivalent to a Yak 9. Similar construction method, similar engine power but with increase in speed, 350 to 370mph.

The later Hurricanes were the reason why the Spitfire Mk V was so inferior to the FW 190A. The obsolescent Hurricanes were given the new two speed supercharger Merlins to keep them as competitive as possible and the Spitfire MkV got a high altitude optimised single speed supercharger Merlin. The 190A had a bigger engine with a two speed supercharger but with poorer octane rating fuel, it had much more power at lower levels, the Spitfire’s supercharger had power absorbing tall gearing for altitude and the over-boosted engine could not operate at full throttle at low level. That is why the low altitude cropped (supercharger), clapped (old planes) and clipped (wing tips) modified Mk Vs were introduced, their available power output at low level was much higher.

The Griffin engine sorted that. Big surprise for the Germans fighter pilots. Clipped wing Spits where a must for photo recon. No guns, just cameras and speed.

@@anthonywilson4873 There was an in between stage where Spitfires got 2 speed, 2 stage, intercooled Merlins, they gave an enormous performance increase. The Spitfire Mk XII got the first Griffons with a single speed supercharger, they had the big power increase at low to medium altitudes.

The Hurricane had a better undercart than the Spitfire. The 109's undercart was even worse. 5% of all 109 losses occurred on takeoff and landing. The Hurricane was easier to repair. A unit of 15 Spits or 109s might have only ten serviceable aircraft. The equivalent Hurricane unit of 15 might have 13 serviceable aircraft, increasing the size of your air force by 20% . The advantages of the Hurricane came to the fore in north Africa and Burma, where spares were unavailable and the airfields were in a very poor condition. The Hurricane was slower than the Spitfire and the 109, but could out-turn them both. The Hurricane had poorer climb than the Spitfire, and its aerodynamics made it poor at high altitude. After 1940, the Hurricane was more useful for ground attack than as an interceptor.
