I love Hurricanes! And their ubiquitous bouncy landings are very endearing!

My father-in-law flew Hurricane Mk IIc "Hurribombers" with 11 Squadron RAF in Burma. He served during the battles of Imphal and Kohima and survived the war with a DFC. Seeing and hearing the Hurricanes in this video makes me think of him.

I know what you're gonna say when I tell you, the Hurri is my favourite WW11 plane. I'm 65 and ex RAF. There's just something about it's rugged ability in a great airframe. She looks good too. More menacing than the Spit.....

The Hurricane was an excellent fighter for its time, without which we would not have held off the Luftwaffe during The Battle of Britain. Somewhat unfairly its reputation has been overshadowed by the Spitfire, but as with today's mixed RAF fighter fleet, there was a place for both working together during WW2. Hurricane is more rugged and could take more damage. With fewer surviving today they are always nice to see.

Of the two I also prefer the Hurricane, maybe because it was my first Airfix model :) Only second to the Tiger Moth and the Mosquito when it comest to looks
@bobsakamanos446913 күн бұрын
It survived crash landings well, of which there were many because it was outclassed. In the air it wss more vulnerable than the Spitfire due to its inadequate performance and prone to fires from the unprotected header tank / thin firewall. .

@@HighFlight And more the better, I was BBMF ground crew in the early 70's we had LF363 and PZ865, I think at the time there was only one other flying in the world. Having worked on Spitfires and Hurricanes, I am very much in the Hurricane camp. I admit having flown in formation on the way to displays the Spitfire looks beautiful. But the Hurricane is a delight to work on, beautifully constructed. I absolutely Love it.

Don't need telling that that is Duxford. Such an iconic airfield. Entirely apt that Duxford still echoes to the song of the Merlin. My immediate thought of that bounced landing and burst of throttle brought to mind the remark "you can teach monkeys to fly better than that".

The Hurricane a good solid gun platform it could take more battle damage than the Spitfires being partially made of wood the ordinance would go straight through it without hitting any vital component s. Plus they shot down more German aircraft than the Spitfires .

Wow, so much propaganda being rehashed.
@bobsakamanos446913 күн бұрын
No, it could not take more battle damage. That's a myth, but the pilots did survive crash landings due to the steel frame.

It's common knowledge that the Hurricane shot down more German aircraft than the Spitfires owing to the tighter turning circle.
@Achilles223 ай бұрын
And it was a better gun platform. Also the Spits went for the fighters and Hurricanes went for the bombers.

In all other air combat metrics, the Hurri was inferior. LW fighter doctrine was peck and zoom, not turning in a horizonal fight. Hurricanes had the worst kill ratio of the battle, with the Me110 having the best. Now research "why" there were more Hurricanes than Spits. We can blame Lord Nuffield for delaying construction of Castle Bromwich Factory while he was promoting the Napier Sabre engine. He was fired in June 1940, after which Spitfires started coming off the CBF production line.
