What happened was the E-2 was taxing out of the forward Hummer hole and there was a Tomcat (F-14B) being launched off of cat 1. They dropped the JBD's just as the E-2 was taxing out and the jet blast blew the E-2 across the deck. The port prop struck a tow tractor that was hooked up to one of VF-74's Tomcats, messed up the tow tractor and took off 3 feet of the Tomcat's radome. It then slid into that KA-6D (fully fueled) which embedded itself into the starboard nacelle of the E-2, they had to use a cutting torch (after they defueled the KA-6) to cut the stab off in order to separate the E-2 from the KA-6. The Sara was eight months into a six month deployment and we flew just about everyday so there was no non-skid left on the deck, especially in the LA. At night the deck would get wet/slick from the condensation so moving around the deck was tricky at best. The thing the prop hit first was a drop tank from one of the F-18 squadrons the Mech's were taking over to EL1 to take it down to the hanger, it was launched over the side from the prop. We had a few people get hurt by flying shrapnel but nothing serious. Also, if you notice there was an F-18 on cat 4 in tension when this happened so that bird had to be suspended with everyone running fire hoses across the cat in fear the KA-6 was going to explode. A few days after this happened we pulled into Jeddah Saudi Arabia to off load the E-2, KA-6D, and an S-3 that collapsed it's gear on deck. This incident happened in early February of 91 during Desert Storm, I was in VF-103 QA at the time.

The image of the E2 backing up and tilting over the edge. My God, heart attack material for the crew.

We had an A-7 taxi off the bow and the aviator punch out and his parachute got caught in the starboard netting and we eventually cut the parachute cords and he was recovered by a whale boat. We had to shut down the engine by pulling the panel and pulling the throttle next to the engine.

I was Conning Officer on CV-67 (JFK) during Desert Shield/Storm. Near the end of the deployment all the non-skid was off the flight deck and we almost lost an A-7 due to too much rudder on the ship during a turn while the A-7 was turning to reposition at the bow. The morning dew in the Red Sea really multiplied the slippery effect. The Captain about had a cow when this happened.

I was a greenshirt... I don't think, other than during a landing or a launch, did I EVER see an aircraft move that fast on the deck.

I watched my CO and our top Pilot(test pilot for class) perform a 90deg wing over, 300' over the Command hangar at ROTA circa 82. CO in leading P3C, and Exec on His 6 checking the length and stiffness of the MAD boom static wick with the following P3's Radome at full Power. Nearly took us all off of our feet! 8 4600 horsepower engines tearing through the air with 8 massive pinwheels.

C-130 could do the same wheelie maneuver hitting the brakes while taxiing backwards. Pushing the props up into forward thrust (where they belong) is much safer... if you have room to stop. I'm glad we never had to taxi on a carrier.

Would the wind coming over the bow and hitting the tail and folded wings have added to the problem?

In air its AWACS. On deck with props turning, its a meat grinding murder machine. A1 and E-2 arre scariest carrier based aircraft in jet age. Any helicopter is in that category.. The safe rotor equipped aircraft on deck is when its cold and tied down.

They prob turned the Boat as he was turning.. had the same thing happen on the Connie CV-64 one E-2 (vaw-116) slid into the other this time the prop came apart we were lucky the plane/prop stopped before the metal core of the prop contacted wing butt of the other E-2.

By the end of a cruise (6 or 7 month deployment) the flight deck would be so slick. I've never seen this kind of incident from sliding but, it was very common for the birds to slide around by the end of a cruise. just saying...

Non skid? Every square foot could hold a pound of dirt! You do not ever want to fall at velocity onto that delightful stuff. Road rash is a minor scrape. This is terminal! They actually grind it down after it hardens. And it is still like Hell, Grand Cayman. I've been there, and I can confirm.
