A walkthrough install of UMI Performance Coilover Conversion for Front and Rear of 1968-1972 Chevelle/A-Body cars.
The install was pretty straight forward and was supplied with decent instructions. UMI has a great customer service team as well. I rate the install about 5-6 out of 10 for difficulty and required no special/rental tools to complete.
Adjustable Viking Shock Settings:
Front: Compression @ 8___Rebound @ 12

Yeah... I just experienced a similar situation... QA1 coilovers vs my New Exhaust. The people that were installing the QA1's said that I would have to remove & redirect my exhaust system.. I probably wouldn't have purchased the shocks if I new I needed to hack up my New Exhaust system...🤔 Great Vid. 👍🏽

Thanks for the reply! To answer your question about the front install, i did not do a video of the front because there are quite a few already on youtube..It was pretty straight forward and easy, even doing on my own. I have them listed in my description for your reference. I was very impressed with the night and day difference between worn out stock and the coilover upgrade initially..but when you find out much tuning adjustment is in these shocks it going to blow your mind...i listed in the video UMI's general cruise base adjustment, (also in my description) which i actually found to be a little firmer than expected...I then adjusted down 2 clicks on rebound and compression on each shock and when for a ride.. man o man!!!...ear to ear..the smoothness, the sensitivity, the control!!!..and then you punch it and the torque from the mild 454 goes directly to the rear and hooks up...no more sideways yaw movement from the torque..couldnt' be happier with the improvement...worth every cent...and busted knuckle... let me know if you have any other questions

Great looking chevelle! I just put rear qa1 dbl adjustable coilovers on my 69 gto and i have a front set as well. I also installed that umi upper shock tower brace and it was a pain. The qa1 have a bracket with 3 bolts and it took me quite awhile and some choice words with skinned knuckles to get it done. NICE RIDE , I have 2 1968 chevelles, I put that IDENTICAL KIT on my Malibu and could not relocate the exhaust to the rear after cutting and welding pipe forever. Do not know why they have that monster coil over lower bracket that has the coilover sit right in the middle. I put the turndowns after the muffler but I drive my cars all the time and could not deal with that NOISE . I did find QA1 Coilovers , their rear coilovers basically sit in stock mounted positions. I can hear my radio again.. I set mine at 25 x4 totally different ride for shure .. Enjoy

Thanks for the instructions. Not sure if anyone else is having this problem but I just finished installing this kit in the rear, and the ride height will not go back to stock no matter how far I screw the washers up the shock, It's way lower. Also, is it bad to have the washers screwed all the way to the top?
@GatorOverland

My set went about the same, I assumed adjusting the collars evenly would give a even result and it was way off. Their answer was the adjustment is cross leveling, the right rear is effected by the left front and left rear is effected by the right front, and there are different weights across the length of the car that would make one coilover be tighter bound than the other. In your case it sounds like your spring rate might be wrong for the weight of your car. You should contact them by phone. They were very informative when I called.

Tony Pulido honestly there is no comparison to before.. the original suspension was so shot.. I would compare the ride and comfort of this suspension upgrade to that of a late model camaro.. You were almost out of adjustment on those rears. 150# is already their stiffest spring. I know you changed a lot of variables but how much do you think those rear control arms helped over just new bushings in the stock arms. They do not have the fancy swivel ends like some brands.
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, as far as adjustments go they were odd. I reached out to them and they said it was normal and had to to with cross weight distribution and makes the preloads different to maintain a certain height. If you lift the left front, it lifts the right rear and so forth. To do it right you need to scale each corner. They said the preload has nothing to do with the performance and spring rate. I could go to a heavier spring rate or leave it alone and be fine. As far as control arms, it was such and improvement over stock. Without the spring a in there it moves freely. Im sure the uni ball setups are nice, but anything was better than stock. This car handles like a new camaro now. I love it. Worth every cent for the upgrade.

@GatorOverland

You bet! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. I started out at a generic recommendation for the shock settings and work from there… Every vehicles weight is different so it’s hard to say exactly one setting to satisfy all… I have it dialed in to where it’s no longer a sofa but it’s still very comfortable and responsive. Best decision I have made for upgrades🤘🏼

can these coilovers be used in the original shock mount locations (i.e. without the relocation bracket) or will they hit something?
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.. you could do it, but I wouldn’t Recommend it. The relo brackets are actually a form of reinforcement. The original stamped components were only designed to handle stress from the shocks function (not much).. supporting the weight of the vehicle on those points without reinforcing could result in material failure..
@personal2809
@personal2809 3 жыл бұрын
@@GatorOverland right i had the same thought. but i was also considering using these as "helper springs" to lift and assist the original coil springs in my fathers 67 SS. this is mainly a street car that may see the occasional launch at the strip with drag radials. Thoughts on that idea? we have been trying to move away from the old air shock method of suspension lifting. Thanks for your insight!
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland 3 жыл бұрын
There are spring assisted shocks available, but not to be confused with coil overs, though they look similar their dynamic and abilities are completely different. Spring and air assisted shocks are more of a bandaid than anything. If you’re wanting to keep it stock I suggest contacting a company like eibach to have your original springs updated with new stock height or desired rake drop.. or... pulling the trigger on a coilover system which allows for multi dynamic adjustability (ride height, rebound, compression) either way you are doing the right thing. Mating new tech with that antiquated suspension is absolutely worth the investment.

The front and rear fender lips are not the same. So when measuring fender lip height, put your tape measure on the rim edge bottom and measure to the fender edge.
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland 4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. There is quite a few inches difference when comparing front and back fender lips. It doesn’t really matter what you use as a reference point when it comes to making sure your spring settings is equal to start with at all four corners. You can then adjust your rake the way you mentioned there after.

Is this full droop? How much lower could you go if you wanted to ?
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply! This is approx 1” drop from factory ride height. The coilover can be adjusted from stock to 3” drop and still maintain the same handling characteristics. You could easily drop the front and rear another 2”, though your rear would be really close to your bump stops which would look cool, but probably wouldn’t be the best for most driving conditions unless you like a hard tail feel.. I’ve been debating on going down 1 more inch. I do like the lower look, but currently this look perfect to me. It handles even better than it looks. Let me know if you have any more questions..

Ugh, so disappointed...... Half of my kit was delivered for years 68-72 and the upper rear control arms and frame braces were shipped as year 64-67. I’m so upset right now. However: on a positive note; every old original nut and bolt is free, loose and ready for removal when the correct parts get here 🤘🏼👍🏼

Frank Carey Man I hate to hear that… That could be simply an expediting error on their end… Automotive parts companies are usually very sympathetic with their mistakes and will handle up with extreme priority.. I did a lift not too long ago and the kit came without the upgraded 2.O fox shocks… They said don’t worry about sending back the shocks to swap, we will send you a whole new kit.. blew my mind.. now my buddy has a whole new $1600 kit without wanting the others back.. it’s unfortunate, but will be worth it in the long run..atleast you’re ahead of the game.. if you plan to replace your upper axle bushings… Go ahead and knock out the old ones .. it’s a project in itself.. a great link on how in the description..

john hartel I’ve seen his video before, it was tough but I got 1 of them out. The bad part is that I’m on my back with the car about 2’ off the ground, no lift 😫. I’m going to have a time getting the new one in do to lack of swing and range of motion. I’ll trying a piece of threaded rod with nuts, washers and a pipe sleeve if I have too. I’ll reinstall the old upper temporarily when I get the bushing in so I can beat out the other side to get thing install down to a minimum when the part get here. Shock tower brace, coil overs are all cinched up at the top 👍🏼
