I genuinely appreciate Senator Hawley’s ability to investigate and ask questions that most are afraid to ask out loud. Our dependency on foreign goods and labor along with our dependency on narcotics is going to open the eyes of the next generation of young Americans. People need to stop considering China as “enemy”, as brainwashed by American mainstream media, and instead think of them as simply a competitor. It’s sad because as a Chinese Canadian who has seen both the east and west side of the world, in China, the Chinese citizens aren’t propagandized to think of Americans as “enemies”. Just like in any business world, sure you don’t wanna be selling out info to your competitors. But on a global scale, to have the mindset of seeing a country as enemy is not the way to go.

20 years ago, working in manufacturing as an automation and controls technician, I brought this question. Although much of our controls had made in the USA label, that statement is only partially. Many had multiple electrical components, made in China. We were looking at making it possible for a tech or certain managers could log in from home and see the process and make programming changes if necessary, and also at time troubleshoot remotely. I questioned this very fact, that many components were foreign made and could contain hidden spy ware. I was chastised, and told their IT team was the best and my concerns were unwarranted. Why did most of our manufacturing go to China. They couldn't get rich fast enough in the US due to many bureaucratic regulations, licenses, labor cost, little or no worries about law suet's. With a higher margin of profit, investors were happy, and everyone but that foreign worker reaped grand benefits. Bring or manufacturing job home. Americans once built the world's best products; they can do it again.

European here, for 20+ years I have been saying this, same thing happened in Europe, I lost an engineering Job in electronics at Philips because they sold out to china, and most other electronics companies followed suit, making me jobless for years. looking for jobs in other fields, etc....And I told them, I told the world we will be dempended on China, we will get crap products and keep paying for the rest of our lives bing slaves to China, and I was cast out like a crazy conspiracy theorist, and now your opening speech prives me right. I am here with my hands toward the skies looking up saying finally, finally they found out, but why did it take you 20+ years? Please get Europe in line with this aswell

senator hawley asking the right high level questions, as usual. this does, however leave us with some hard to confront realities: a) chinese strategic thinking has (seemingly) been slithering its tentacles everywhere by exploiting the shareholder greed which prioritises quick money and production over everything else (ie: semiconductor and downstream security). we are now in a situation where... (correct me if im wrong)... the US and the rest of the world has no way of knowing if China has put hardware backdoors (intel chip within a chip style) into products that are already in use all over the world (giving china the power of remote sabotage in the event tensions flare up). b) any military confrontation would result in unacceptable military and civilian damage and casualties for all sides. it is therefore imperative our high level politicians start engaging in less schoolyard style bullying and more in a diplomatic style which matches the position of their high office. simple cheap vote grabbing by pandering to the lowest common denominator on the streets will win elections, but it wont achieve peace or a higher order goal of that nature given the ideological (and imaginary) divisions we are all dealing with at the moment. the only way forward which would not completely unroot the world is for the superpowers to cooperate on some basics. so far one of the very few politicians i have complete confidence in anywhere on the planet :)

Its a global phenomenon where the world gave up its manufacturing to a cheap source of Labour it has taken decades now there is unemployment housing you name it. With A.I and robotics coming into the work force we should listen to Elon Musk saying A.I is not your friend it is more dangerous than most people realize.
