Fabulous air layer! So exciting when they work that well ! Thanks for the detail on wiring it in the pot! - and we do call them box cutters!

Hi Peter. The differences between our uses of the English language are really interesting. I find that American descriptions are often more straightforward and make more sense. A good example is sidewalk and pavement. I've recently noticed that my nieces (10-15 yrs old) use a lot of American words such as trash instead of rubbish. It's probably down to youtube and netflix.

So important to secure the tree after setting in the new pot. I love your method to tie down. I’ve lost 5-6 trees from the tipping and popping out cuz I’ve tried just using a stake… sigh… wish I would have thought of this

We live and learn Jason. I lost quite a few collected trees because of the wind before I came up with this method.

Great news about the success of the hawthorn. I only watched your original video of this tree yesterday, so your new video was fortuitous. Looks like you will be at 2k subscribers well before the end of August. Keep up the good work, Tony!!

That was lucky Nikki. I gain about 10 new subscribers a day, so I would predict hitting 2k mid September (unless I am lucky and create a video which the algorithm likes)

Hi Matt. That is exciting news to me because I have a liquid amber from bare-root stock with awful roots which I would love to air layer, so if you could keep me up to date with the success that would be much appreciated.
@mattbrennan6472 жыл бұрын
@@TonysBonsai ,, sure. It’s been about 8 weeks now and still no sign of roots. The air layer is just a small branch of a massive mature tree in my backyard. I’ll let you know if and when the magic happens. Im committed to keep trying until I have success. I absolutely love that species.

Thanks for the update. Mine's only quite small so it will be a layer on trunk, so I think I'll hold off until I hear good news on your end. I bet your tree looks amazing in autumn! Even though mine is only small I can't wait to see it when the leaves turn.

@TonysBonsai2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kieth. I have done one, but it was one of my very first videos, and to say that it's a bit rough around the edges is an understatement. I use pine bark (Melcort bought online), perlite, compost and grit in equal parts, but next year I will be reducing the amount of compost and upping the perlite a bit to make it more free draining.

Hi Tony, what to do if the air layer didn`t work (there is no roots) and it is end of summer?
@TonysBonsai2 жыл бұрын
Great question. Providing you are not in a rush to separate the branches from the tree, you can just re-cut the strip of bark and re-attempt the air layer leaving it over winter and check it next year in late spring. I would wrap it up well to help protect it from frost depending upon where you live.

Did you water the moss around the air-layered roots from time to time? if so, how !?
@TonysBonsai2 жыл бұрын
Great question Jack. I applied the moss pretty wet, then just left it on there with no additional water. It was pretty dry when I removed it, but seemed to be doing well and wasn't completely dry. I suspect that a bit of water could have been seeping in when I watered the tree, but then again, it was wired fairly tightly.
@JackC19612 жыл бұрын
@@TonysBonsai Cheers Tony, I have seen videos where they use a syringe to add water. I suspect your right though in that water got in as you watered or it rained. 👍
@AlexBraunton2 жыл бұрын
Awesome result mate! I too thought they could take much longer. What are your thoughts for after care ?
@TonysBonsai2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, not bad I thought! I've placed it in partial shade and I'll just keep it watered for the year and leave it for the roots to develop.
@TheBonsaiGarden2 жыл бұрын
I often struggle with air layering - often I get a lot of thick callousing but not much root. I suspect the moss may have been too damp. I have had better success with Fuji cherry which roots readily. Perhaps I should send you my trees for air layering if you promise to send them back 😆
