My visit to the Sunken Lane and Hawthorn Ridge, site of an attack by the 29th Division against the Hawthorn Ridge Redoubt. Here, cinematographer Geoffrey Malins filmed the mine explosion and parts of the attack.

My great grandfather Chester Russel was 2nd Lieutenant of z company, 2nd battalion Royal fusiliers. He led the men over the top at Hawthorne ridge. His diary describes the events and how he was captured. He referenced a cheer in the German trenches once’s men emerged from the dirt.

Thank you. My paternal grandfather was fortunate enough to survive WW1. Lancastrian pals battn. Oral, family history, is at best a little sketchy, as folk didn't like to talk about it. I'm currently trying to research and dig. Wasn't invalided off, The Somme. That much, I know. Another "theatre". Search: Sabaton 1916. Sad. Proceed with caution! I've been deeply interested in the Battle of the Somme for many decades. Thank you so much for your 'take' on events at the sunken lane and Hawthorn Ridge on 1 July 1916. I particularly liked the drone footage, which is transforming videos like this.
