My first encounter with the term (in a Japanese cultural context) was in the pokemon game series where the title "Maniac" popped up as a name for various kinds of trainers (e.g. bug maniac, hex maniac, ruin maniac). Interesting to see it has had some mainstream exposure in the western cultural space, but unbeknownst to most (as until now I'd just assumed those titles were quirks of the series, not more general descriptors of archetypes).

this season one of my favorite mangas got an anime adaptation: Hoshi no Samidare. Sadly the first episode had non of the energy the story had. Non of the cool factor. And the opening, which I normally don't care about, is mostly a slideshow. Is this the dark timeline?
