They don't want Eren to be that kind of monster, but they also know they're the ones who benefit from that genocide that he's planning. So what Eren does is essentially screw with them so hard that they wind up hating him (that's his intent anyway) so that when he dies, they won't be broken up about him. It works for all of 10 minutes until armin figured out what he was trying, but eren was trying to protect his best friends from himself so to speak.
